Up until now, I couldn't get enough Xbox 360 vs. PlayStation 3 side-by-sides. But after this direct HDMI feed from Turok, my mind is mush. The opening blacks look far better on the 360, but you lose sight of any contrast difference by the middle of the clip comparisons. Sometimes the PS3 has better textures, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes the PS3's full RGB gamut offers colors that pop a bit more, sometimes it doesn't. Bottom line: if you have Turok for either of these next gen systems, you're doing fine. And it seems that publishers are getting far better about their cross-platform quality control.
UPDATE: It would appear that there was no control for the 7.5 IRE black level difference between US and Japanese NTSC standards.

Careful, you're now posting in a war zone.
It is commonly known (well maybe common for us uber geeks) the black level standards between Japan and USA NTSC have a different rating scale. Thus why you would get the difference in levels without adjustments to the TV between boxes.
Yeah, the two versions might be OK side-by-side, but you're still playing Turok.
@EnigmaNemesis:
This was brought up when the original Xbox hit and the PS2, and people wondered why they had to adjust their contrast for the two.
Japan uses different standards than the US for black references. And since each console is made with their standards in mind.. you get this effect.
I no longer give a crap about comparisons between these two consoles.
Get over it Kotaku! Start making real stories.

cept 360 has the edge of being slightly better at the controls in every fps. *whistles off into oblivion*
They both look fine and there's nary a difference. The game looks okay on both systems.
Fan those flames of war!
@multimoog: And that's why this comparison should be considered a no-op.
Exclusives>Graphics
S'all I gotta say about that.
@ruba-dub-dub: im waiting the for pc version ...better controls and better everything...except better game, its turok....
@Setzer IIDX: Agreed
if it just me of did the music sound awesome that was playing when the dinosaur was biting his neck halfway through
it seems that whoever compiled this video intentionally washed out the ps3 side a bit so that we can clearly see the line of separation, but also deeming our capabilities of judging the graphical differences diminished. id recommend a solid tiny white line down the middle instead of a rectangular layer of white.
Why do they even bother to put in textures if half of the screen gets blown to white, in a night scene?
@ruba-dub-dub: Utter nonsense. Yes, I like the 360 controller better but that is a personal thing. Hopefully this will be the last comparison. I doubt it, but the over "who cares" I am feeling here is a good sign. The only company I am still skeptical of thier ability to make a good port is Ubisoft.
@buttpwner:
That is bullshit, explain how the hell does the Xbox 360 looks fine during the intro and then too bright in actual gameplay as the PS3 is exact the opposite ...
So if most third party games look the same on both systems and PS3 exclusive games look better (like gt) then clearly one would want to buy the PS3.
The opening sequence made them look slightly different, mostly in lighting, but after that they look very similar. Not much difference at all.
Sony Defense Force will need to brace for impact. =P
@tehmark: Here, Here!
Truly though if anyone can say one version looks vastly superior to the other, you're showing your fanboy member card
I still have bad memories of the first Turok on n64.
He had a leg glitch at the end, that inverted his leg during the final cinematic. Lawl.
There needs to be some kind of threshold. The games need to have some difference actually worth bringing up: I'd say Orange Box represents the "just different enough to compare threshold as there are a few glaring performance differences scattered throughout.
But if they're MORE alike than Orange box, we're getting into the "you are an asshat for caring" territory. Turok = same. COD4 = same. Rock Band = same. DMC = same... no need to waste time even attempting to nitpick differences with titles this close.
I'm crossing my fingers that Lost Planet's crap port will be the last time we see a multiplayer game with differences actually worth talking about and they're all just "pretty much the same" from here on out.
I noticed some differences, but oh well.
Last generation when there was a multi-plat game, I chose the controller best suited for the genre. I'd still do that, but I only have a PS3 at the moment (waiting for MS to fix the hardware). I have a Wii too, but that's a whole different power in terms of graphics.
The other thing is my buddy has a PS3 and 360, but buys every multi-plat for the 360 just for the achievements. I say this, platforms suck on the 360 controller, but that's just me.
@ruba-dub-dub: Why is the 360 controller better again? Isn't it the same thing as the Sixaxis controller, except Microsoft had to put the d-pad and analog stick like the N64 because Sony had the patent for that placement.
Isn't also the reason the d-pad crap on the 360 controller because again Sony has the best patent for the d-pad.
Seems like the 360 controller is just what you get, after avoiding all of Sony's patents.
360 looks more crisp for sure. Ps3 version looks a little washed out in comparison and the colour are not as good. Still, the games completely mediocre anyway, so come back when it'd GTA IV
the wii version looks best!
Quick question: Did GameTrailers start posting videos with the PS3 super-white enabled and RGB full-range on?
If they're still doing side-by-sides with the default settings, then these are pretty meaningless to me.
They both look fine. I don't see much of a difference.
I thought there was some trick to adjusting PS3's color output to make it look less washed out?
who gives a shit? the game isn't even that great imo. but posting comparisons is just fucking retarded...
@MaxVest:
I believe they are using default settings unfortunately, but some here will probably say that's more fair.
Hopefully nobody's making their decision on which current-gen system to buy based on which one has the superior version of Turok anyway.
@imaballa: Wow. If you read ruba-dub-dub's message... he said that it was a personal preference.
Same here. I prefer the 360 controller to the PS3's controller. It feels better to me.
I thought Game Trailers couldn't do HDMI comparisons because of the handshake issues. Now suddendly they have no problem?
sony fanboys UNITE!
@imaballa:
i have never understood what makes the higher placement of the left analog stick better, both my thumbs are in the same place in relation to my hand so either move both analogs are none.
@Nintenboy01: Default settings for PS3 have super-white and RGB full-range set to off. There are some older TVs these settings won't work on.
But for most people with HDMI-capable TVs, this isn't a problem and enabling these options will result in a picture with a better contrast ratio and truer color.
Just to fan the fanboy flames a little more....
The PS3 version caused the game to be delayed:
[www.canada.com]
@Winterbringer: Well, GTA is different, because there's additional factors to consider besides just graphics. Namely, whether or not you want the downloadable expansions, which only the 360 will have.
Game Trailers ... proving ammunition to the fanboy wars all over the interweb!
That should be their motto.
I hope this turns out to be a good flame war. We really haven't had a good comparison flame thread in a while.
@Queasy:
lol consoles
They should do a side-by-side-by-side comparison of Turok 64 via port on the Wii (VC), 360 (XBLA), and PS3 (PSN), just so I could not care and buy whichever one(s) has online multiplayer, same as I would with Goldeneye 007.
@RastaSega: And this means what? That your on the other side looking to pick a fight with others? That one side is worse than others? Gimme a break.
@imaballa: That explains a lot if true. I always wondered why nobody else used the same type of d-pad as the PS controlers.
@EnigmaNemesis:
Game Trailers and Kotaku: We'll never let the fanboy wars die!
Lose sight - not "site"
Did either of the consoles make the game worth playing? Now THAT would be a feat.
Oh god...
It's like using a newspaper to compare photograph quality...um...meh.
@MaxVest:
I dont think it actually matters, RGB full and super white are enabled by the TV if it supports them, surely with a capture there is no TV to pass through. If the HDMI data is captured for hosting then the settings will not effect the picture [will they?]
Either way, colour correction should be done on the TV as all TVs handle inputs differently. These videos should be used [if anything] for texture, framerate, effects and not for colour, brightness, contrast which are all dependent on the TV more than the console.
@ruba-dub-dub: Your statement, while it matches my own thoughts for the most part, is a matter of this little thing called OPINION. I do prefer the 360 controller over the PS2 and PS3 design for most games, but there are some instances where I like the analog sticks next to each other and in the center, like on the DualShock and Suxaxis (see what I did there?).
The tightness in the sticks is much better for preceision, and the sticks on the 360 pad are super comfortable. However, I am much better at CoD4 on the PS3 for some reas
