Condemned 2 Is Pretty Damned Brutal

Condemned 2 lead designer Frank Rook walks us through the changes made to the Condemned series in the second installment, Condemned 2: Bloodshot. He talks a lot about the combat system, which introduces fist fighting, combos, brutal chain attacks and environmental finishing moves similar to those found in The Punisher video game a few years back. It was hard to pay attention because I was just overwhelmed by the sheer brutality of the whole thing. The shaking camera and the sounds combine to make combat so visceral that even this tiny trailer had me wincing sympathetically. Rook also goes into the welcome changes to the forensics portion of the game, which was probably my biggest disappointment from the first one. They want to improve over the original in every way, and it looks like they are right on course to do so.

  • Oh wow, that looks awesome!

  • First one was tight, this one looks better, sign me up.

  • The first one was awesome, specially towards the end. I can't wait for this one.

I would use the bowling pin to reenact a certain scene ;). This seems like it will be pretty fun even though you are being shot a point blank and not being hit.

I saw the preview on X-Play a couple days ago and was completely sucked in by the whole thing. The first one was thee launch game to beat (sorry, CoD2) and freaked me out in a way that no Silent Hill or Resident Evil ever has (and those are two of my favorite franchises). I really like how the AI will be working together to surround you, etc. This game will have me sleeping with the lights on for nights. I just wish the game would do what The Suffering did and pick up based on the last game and the way you allowed your character to behave (good? Evil? Somewhere in-between?). Condemned forces you into making one hell of a tough decision at the end and it would be nice for this one to play based on the choice you made in the first. That said, this is the game I'm looking forward to most in the first half of '08.

  • Looks pretty sick. It also looked good for a pre-beta video.

  • Looks great.

I reckon I'll purchase the original (I'd like to own it) and this at the same time, and play them back to back.

Maybe I'll have some friends over, and make it a sort of weekend long festival of hobo killing.

  • Best part of the clip when he throws his weapon at the enemy to trip him. A very Batman moment.

  • fucking glorious. the first one still holds up even after all this time! can not wait. and cheers on the forensics bit, seems much more interactive = awesome ambiance and a welcomed break from smashing a guy's head through a t.v.!

  • ...possibly the most brutal thing I've seen this week.

That looks amazing. I played the demo for the first one and it was scary as shit but this looks even better.

  • It sounds an awful lot like they're shifting from a survival horror game to a pure action game, which is pretty disappointing.

  • I am actually not sure I want to watch this video. The first one was so awesome that I already know I'm getting this, so I might as well not spoil anything for myself. Hope it's as great as you all are saying!

  • Damn...this looks actually pretty fun..

The forensics looks greatly improved (that was the one and only weak point of the first). I'm not sure why he talks about the varied weapons and weapons breaking as something new? This was a big part of the first one. No weapon lasted very long, making much of the game a slugfest. I'm going to put on my flamesuit and make this statement: Condemned 2 is going to be the best game of 2008.

    Yes. I went there.

  • The DTs aspect has me interested. Apparently, your character has become such a drunk you have to drink booze to keep your aim steady.

    Awesome!

  • Hey, where did that blood on that door come from? Hmm, better take a closer look. Oh, maybe it is from one of the 27 vest-wearing hobos I bludgeoned to death in the hall.

  • @JeffPaine: You've gotta keep appeal to the writhing mass of casuals/teenagers/ADD gamers/frat boys who don't have enough patience to endure five seconds of anything not action-oriented.

  • It is odd that he has to wade through mindless killers, mindlessly slaughtering them, in order to investigate a murder. Seems like the whole city is bathed in blood so what's the point?

I liked the first one a lot but I'm having trouble understanding the character motivations for this round.

  • The first game was great. Will pick this up for PS3 since my 360 is starting to sound like a shot-up helicopter. Must save its strength for the few exclusives I want like Alan Wake and Too Human.

  • The first one was one of the best games i ever played, i hope this one to be great too.
    I want a Pc version :(

  • Looks pretty damned awesome to me...

  • Why are some of the enemies clothes so damn shiny?

  • 1:28 is pretty sick.

  • I LOVE DICK

  • woah, Im digging the sequel. I seriously need to get around to finishing the first game.

  • I didn't like the demo I played of the first one but alot of people are saying it is there favourite game and stuff so maybe I should try it. What consoles will this one be on?

  • Excellent. The terrible orginal trailer ("they said my drinking was an issue") raised some fears over the direction, but with enough improvements it could still be great.

  • @-Sigil-: Oh the 360 and PS3

  • @dip:Metallic fibers.
This game looks more brutal than Manhunt 2, let us see what ESRB does. My guess M for Mature.

  • @dip: Next-Gen-itis

  • I really enjoyed the first one. Freaked me out and made me jumpy whenever I put it down. But I was cursed with that game bug during the final fight. All I could do was kick. Couldn't punch or pick up weapons or anything. Took forever. Gotta admit that I don't want to have to put up with something like that again. Hopefully this one will be a bit more solid.

  • @TearsandScreams: Thanks.

  • Was I the only one when playing the first game, that took a break once in a while due to this paranoid feeling you were going to get scared shitless when you went into a dark room?

  • Why?

    I mean, really, why?

Why does this have to be so brutal? And why does everybody say that this brutality is great? I really enjoyed the first game, the story and setting ... reminds me of SE7EN. And I wanted to buy this sequel, but this "real" brutality is too much. Why does this game need to be so bloody? Can't you tell a cool story with a "normal" level of violence?

  • @TheBard: after the later levels and the ending of the first game this game can't be less brutal than this...

  • The first one was good. This one looks like it'll be great.

  • @TheBard: The story revolves around the brutality ... at least it did in the first game.

I am really looking forward to this new insallment and I wonder how they plan on handling the MP aspect.

  • I like what I see. But never got around to purchasing the first, do I need to complete that in order to get a full understanding of the story in this?

  • @TheBard: I do agree somewhat, that's why I only played the demo and didn't try the game itself. Portraying gangs and cops fighting gets me slightly iffy, I don't mind games like Ninja gaiden 2 or gears of war though.

  • The first one hit you right in the guts, unlike any game I'd seen before. In an ocean of me-too first person shooters it literally lifted you up by the neck and swore loudly in your face whilst shaking you about a bit.

It found it disturbing. That hide and seek dynamic and the struggle for survival once you were locked in melee was really visceral.

    More please!!

  • @TheBard: We don't really know enough about the game to determine if it'll just be about killing random people. This is just a trailer-thing, and companies like to make trailers looks fancy. I would also be disappointed if the whole game you just killed hobos but somehow I doubt that'll be the case. Or at least I hope it won't.

  • An improvement not mentioned in that trailer, but one I'd really like to see is the ability to carry more than one weapon at a time, or at least be able to reload firearms when you find another one of the same type instead of just trading your old gun with five bullets for the new one that has eight because losing those five bullets always felt needlessly stupid in a game where you needed every advantage you could get.

I'm not a fan of weapon degradation in games, but I have this strange feeling Condemned 2 could make it work, and breaking a lead pipe over a guy's head will be more satisfying than disappointing.

Anyway I'm glad to see they're committed to improving over the first one in every way because I thought it was a game that had great potential, but was held back by some annoying flaws.

  • There is a stage in the first one that takes place in an abandoned men's clothing store that sent the creepiness meter through the roof. One word: mannequins. Hundreds of 'em. Nearly pissed myself. Seriously, the most impressive thing about the original (and I was impressed by a lot of it) was the sound design. Hearing this in 5.1 was nerve-jangling. I already have the sequel reserved. If it can provide a moment as intense as some of the best stuff in the original, then it will be $60 well spent. If it surpasses the original, then it might find a nice warm snug spot in that very limited and exclusive section of my game shelf called "the permanent collection." My hopes are high.

  • TheBard: There are plenty of non-brutal games out there. Go play one of those and leave this one to us.

  • Image of Sloopydrew Sloopydrew at 12:27 PM on 02/08/08 *

    @TheBard:

What about violence is "normal?" And why do you get to decide what the "normal" amount is? I'd say the majority of people would consider the first Condemned to be excessively violent, but you found it fine. These games are, in large part, about the brutality. Should they remove the steel pipes and replace them with flowers?

  • I was talking with a producer at Sega and they're really excited about this game, though I guess the decision to not use Greg Grunberg again was a contentious one.

I just got my copy of the original back from a friend and can't wait to play it again in the next month or so. Late nights, no lights...

The first comdemned was seriously twisted and awesome. I'm so far really disappointed with the visuals in this game and it doesn't appear to me that the combat is really as much improved as that guy says. But I'll probably still play it, as the first one was one of the best horror experiences ever.

  • The hand to hand combat is nothing new. anyone play that XBOX game called Breakdown?

  • the combat looks totally badass. it reminds me of the Chronicles of Riddick, another dark, under rated game with great hand to hand combat

  • Looks awesome.

  • Wow. The last one scared the crap out of me, hopefully this will to the same (i'm full of crap, you know?)

I dug the 'it's dark, flashlight-y, jump out from behind stuff' atmosphere. It was as stressful to play as it was scary, always waiting for something to jump out and boo at you.

  • @Pombar: Current-gen

Can't wait. I just pray that it's longer than the first one.
