Burnout Paradise DLC Won't Lock Out Cheapskates

Speaking with MTV, EA have taken the unusual step (at least for them) in assuring Burnout Paradise players that future DLC for the title won't split the online community between those who opt to buy the DLC and those who don't. Issuing a written statement, they explain:

It's our intention to extend the life of Burnout with additional DLC in the near future. As mentioned, we don't want to split the online community between those that have content and those that don't. Our intention is to offer both free and paid for DLC in a way that enables everyone to 'see' the content, even if they have not paid for it.
They wouldn't elaborate on what exactly that meant. Which means I'm just going to speculate that they'll open up new areas of the map for you to drive around, but unless you pay for the DLC, you won't be able to trigger any of the events contained within.

  • I suppose if they introduce new DLC cars too that they'll just update everyone's copy of the game with skins of the new cars? It would make sense. It'd be just like when Wings of the Goddess came out for FFXI, they just did a update so you could see the new class but not be able to play it.

  • what's going to happen if my system doesn't have a HD??

    :(

    @cooler_dood:you're screwed?

why don't you have one anyway? If you're on Kotaku, it's obvious you're a gamer who is in the know....

  • It could be like Crackdown where only one player needs to by the DLC pack for the two of them to play the content.

  • @cooler_dood:

You can't play online. Online is HD required. And it's for the better. We don't need cheapskates like you soiling our golden paved streets.

@cooler_dood: I'm going to speculate that you will shell out for one.

My guess would be new cars. You can see them driving, you can even race against them. You just can't get them unless you pay.

As long as they don't put up new area's to drive in that only those with the DLC will be able to play.

  • i want more roads, races and jumps. i could care less about new cares unless of course they;re real cars.

I want a police chase. I would like to see splashes when you hit the water (would they be able to do that with DLC?)

  • I guess this is similar to what Crackdown did, although Crackdown allowed cheapskates to get achievements too.

@tralfaz23: Man I would laugh so hard (while crying inside) if they released some downloadable "water splashing physics" for 400 MS points or something.

  • @SpeedTurtle: I guess it would pay to read the comments first.

This also explains why the HDD was required, since they hinted at not wanting to splinter the market for HDD users, so the money train was the real reason for core users left in the cold.

  • I'd much rather have more map than more cars. Cars won't extend the life of the game that much. More map would, especially if it's as detailed as the current map.

  • Sorry, but this game is sweet.

  • @HykCraft: is it sad that my decision to buy a ps3 was sealed by this game? It better be as awesome as it looks.

  • I have a bad feeling we'll get bullshit DLC. More product placement cars and more cars that look like other cars but this one has a dragon on it. :( They should just jump the shark and give us airplanes and let us dive bomb El Camino's in kick ass slow-mo.

  • I think that, they would charge people who want the new DLC 1st. Making the DLC free, when they are ready to release the next update. That would give the people who bought the DLC, a chance to PWN nubs who waited to download for free.

I just want them to expand Paradise's map size on the western side (give us a crazy gorge overpass into a mountain town!), I don't care if they charge me for more events as long as there are a decent number per DLC pack. Heck, 10 new events, 2 road rage, 2 races, 2 stunt runs, 2 marked mans and 2 others (perhaps an area-specific/new type) would be plenty for 15 bucks along with the map expansion, and people could still run around in there but just wouldn't be able to do all the races and road rages, etc.

Love this game either way, I think it looks awesome on my 360 so if the PS3 is slightly better than I'm legitimately jealous for the first time ;)

  • This is precisely what I wanted to see with the PGR and Forza series. You can't really do it with tracks so much, but when it comes to new cars, let people download the models for free, they're just not available in their own garages and a host can't lock in said car as the only car choice if someone in the room doesn't have it "fully" unlocked. It seemed like such an obvious way of doing things...let people play online against the new bad-ass DLC car, but they can't drive it themselves until they pay up.

I dunno why it took so long for someone to actually do it, but thank god someone finally did.

  • test drive unlimited's DLC is similar

  • I find it funny how developers kiss up to all the complaining and whining gamers that hate to pay for DLC. I wonder what will happen when in the next 5 years games will be DLC only what will these same gamers do. If you want the stuff buy it if now then do not buy there is nothing free in this world

  • This is tough to admit because I trashed this game here after working the demo for 3 or 4 hours. I've been playing since v1 and I just couldn't stomach the lack of restart.

I'm a changed man. I'm sorry EA. You win.

While I still miss the circut runs and I really hope there's a more developed method to organize a race online... this game is a hell of a lot of fun.

Bring on the down loadable content.(am i the only one who wondered what the hell DLC was?) Open new areas. Gimme a bus! Map Editor! Let us make our own circuits by placing concrete barriers.

@hungry_for_worms: God damn test drive unlimited. i have such a love hate relationship with you.

  • @cooler_dood: what's going to happen if my system doesn't have a HD??

IIRC Burnout Paradise requires a HDD. This is probably one of the reasons why.

  • crash mode confirmed....at a price.

  • Image of ManjiKengo ManjiKengo at 10:33 PM on 02/07/08 *

    @jfx316:

    It was relabled Showtime.

Press RB and LB when crashing into something.

  • Remember, this is the same EA that makes you pay for content that is ALREADY on the DISC that you BOUGHT (NFS:PS).

  • the very, only, thing i can imagine that people could "see and not use" would be a car ....

people that bought the car will play with it, others will see it ...

what else could they do ? ... they can't add roads for people that pay and others to look at ...

  • i hope you only get 1 cars to choose from in the begining and you have to pay like ten dollars for each new car download because I am an idiot who thinks paying for dlc for a game i already bought is a good idea, and I like making sure the trend continues because I am a tard. I especially like it when I download something and the download is only a few kilobytes meaning the information was already sitting on my disc. that is especially cool. so is EA and Criterion.

  • @kingrottenboy: Cry more.

  • @kingrottenboy:

I am one of those idiots that likes DLC and doesn't mind paying for it.

Here's an idea, kingrottenboy, learn that some of us have the income and desire to extend our enjoyment of the game if we so choose.

Oh wait, I forgot how fashionable it is to bash on EA these days, even though they have put out some fantastic product in the last year or so...
Rock Band, Burnout Paradise, C&C3, skate. all really well done and very polished games. But let's all forget about that since we don't like paying for things, and arbitrarily hate on them.

  • @Jypsy: QFT

  • I'll pay for K.I.T.T. and not that mustang abomination.
I'll pay for the A-Team truck
I'll pay for a Bat Mobile

    that's about it

  • Sweet, like Crackdown.

  • @cooler_dood:
Considering it's been long established that 360's are essentially gimped without a HDD why did/have you:

    A) Get a 360 sans the all important HDD.
    OR
    B) Not got one yet, if you bought it before it became even more of fact than it is now.

I don't even know why they still continue to sell them without HD's, most 360 owners end up needing them at some point.

As for the DLC I imagine it'll be no access offline and probably some access online for those that don't buy it. They just don't want to force people without the DLC out of online games where people have it.

  • I gotta say this is one of THE BEST games I've ever played. I'll gladly buy new cars and shit when they offer them.

Single player is crazy deep and online, well, you just have to play online to "get it".

I just wish there was a penalty for quiting when 7 of 8 people had a challenge done.

  • I would rather pay to have crash mode then keep this "Showtime" shenanigans. I hate it so much. A few times i go to do showtime and there are no cars to be had.

@Double J: you made me lawl

  • Image of dowingba dowingba at 12:55 AM on 02/08/08 *

@Odin: Because when you buy a Core, you end up having to buy a memory card for it. Memory cards are what, $50? And then when you inevitably buy a harddrive, you've blown another $100 or $180.

Basically, if you bought a Core, Microsoft just stole money from you. They just looked you straight in the eye and stole money right out of your hand, without even blinking.

  • Pretty much as NWN worked when in multiplayer, you could see others use additional content with the expansions even if you couldn't use it.

  • All the DLC is probably just new cars, and free challenges?

  • 10:1 says that the "DLC" is already on the disk like every other EA game. Bunch of crap paying for parts of what should have been a complete game in the first damn place.

  • @PapaBear434: I think so too.

Nice call by the devs though, not to alienate a big part of the gamers that did shell out 60dollars for it. Kudos to you guys!

  • @rebelphoenix: You know, I remember Counter strike and some other titles for the Xbox, where DLC came on the disc and you payed for downloading and sometimes did not even pay for 1kb files that unlocked the content that came with the FUCKING DISC! Now that was freaking annoying and stupid, the ones that charged for it atleast had a scam going, the ones that made it for free...

Did it just so MS or themselves could advertise the awsomness of DLC, when it was not true DLC. Any game that does that should be boycotted even if it is free, because it is just so damn stupid.

  • I agree. I think cop chases would add a tremendous amount of fun to the game. I'm the kind of dork that likes to set time records so I'm always speeding around the city as fast as possible (hold the boost down and never look back), but it'd be cool if every once in a while a cop starts giving chase and instead of trying to take him down, your goal is to lose 'im.

  • Sure, the Cheapos will be able to "SEE" the new DL cars/content on their screens when in multiplayer, they just won't be able to use any of them(they'll most likely be given a mediocre "FREEBIE" vehicle). It'll be a riot when they get to see the newer, DL cars fly past them/outdamage them in multiplayer events. They said, they'd be able to "see" the content, what they let out was that they'll likely "see" it leave them in the dust.

  • @manjikengo: yeah, i mean REAL crash mode.....

  • It sounds to me like they want to put a positive spin on making you pay for content already on the disk, or they want to advertise the stuff you could be having if you shelled out extra money. Like Crackdown's strategy of giving you a free cheat mode along with shoving in your face that you can't do this challenge unless you buy their other not-so-free DLC.

  • Image of fuchikoma fuchikoma at 09:35 AM on 02/08/08 *

Nothing new to WoW players, download huge patches for stuff you don't get to use.

  • I think this is a great move from Criterion/EA.

PGR3, and I think Forza 2, although I could be mistaken on that, had a pretty bad problem when people who didn't download the free DLC cars could not play with the people who did. This caused online racing to be completely foobared, because the player-base was basically fractured in half (the haves and the have-nots). It made it really difficult to get any raced on.

What Criterion/EA have done completely eliminates the problem in a very user-friendly way. Not to mention that EA probably loves it, because they get a marketing benefit from it ("see that car that other dude is driving that you don't have...only 100 points...").

  • ARMYOFJUAN : I would rather pay to have crash mode then keep this "Showtime" shenanigans. I hate it so much. A few times i go to do showtime and there are no cars to be had.

I'm an old burnout fan, and this game turned out to be somewhat of a disappointment to me (and I bought it using part of a gift card :P )

    1) Showtime is no substitute for crash mode.
    2) WTF happened to multiplayer road rage, it seems this game would have been perfect for that.

  • This is pretty smart marketing for their DLC. Instead of a static message saying "come buy this new DLC", you get to see flashy new cars other players might bring to a race.

"Wow, where'd you get that?" Ching - new sale!
