Blizzard Entertainment execs—Mike Morhaime, CEO and Co-Founder, Rob Pardo, Senior VP of Game Design, and Frank Pearce, Executive VP of Product Development—took the stage this morning at DICE to talk about the company's history "From Developer To Worldwide Publisher." The three spent a good portion of their "conversation" talking about one of the aspects that makes Blizzard unique, their commitment to quality and gameplay above all else.
The team also revealed a list of the Blizzard games that have been canceled over the course of their 17 years, a list longer than you may think.
If you thought Blizzard was only focused on StarCraft, Warcraft and Diablo, think again. While they may have a few lesser known titles like Blackthorne and The Lost Vikings on their resumes, they were at one point working on all of the following.
- Games People Play
- Crixa
- Shattered Nations
- Pax Imperia
- Denizen
- Warcraft Adventures
- Nomad
- Raiko
A look at some of the preliminary artwork, in extra large size, can be seen here.
We know that Blizzard was unhappy with the quality of Warcraft Adventures and many of us were glad to learn of its termination and that Pax Imperia eventually went to another developer. Oddly enough, StarCraft Ghost did not appear on the list, despite appearing to be dead in the water. Unfortunately, Pardo, Morhaime and Pearce didn't expound upon the games in question, nor did they specifically reveal why they were canceled, but expect more from their talk later to shed more light on the decisions that go into canceling a game.

Why make games, when we have t3h WoWZZZ!
It means there is some form of hope! Maybe someday....in the next several years there will be a game named "Starcraft Ghost" or atleast some form of FPS :)
Bah, they weren't planning on making another Lost Vikings????
I love adventure games. I would of loved to play Warcraft Adventures.
Too bad.
Very interesting. Does the absence of Star Craft: Ghost mean there is hope out there somewhere?
Focused on Diablo my ASS!
I want Diablo 3 NAO!
Blizzard doesn't do new IPs.
I expect the decision to cancel some of those games went something like this: "Let's concentrate on Star/War/craft Number/expansion and make sure that's a great game."
Wha..? Ghost not mentioned? Hints? Or are they just being mean? =(
I'd settle for Lost Vikings 3 though.
Blackthorne! I liked that game.
I remember playing Pax Imperia back in the day. That was a great game! It's also what got my dad into PC games, so, awesome.
Feel free to put Diablo III in your list. I don't care anymore...
granted it was pushed to another dev team but ghost should be on that list.
@Jetsetneo: Ghost has been "shelved indefinitely" which mainly means "on hold" for right now. After going through 2 development studios, they weren't happy with them. I was lucky enough to play the game in it's now rare form back at one of the E3's years ago. Who knows if they will tie Ghost in with SC2 on the next-next-gen systems..
Interesting stuff, I guess we can all hope that Starcraft: Ghost isn't dead. I was somewhat expecting a longer list though...
Pax Imperia: Eminent Doman was a fun game.. never knew it was originally a Blizz title.
As for Ghost. I was VERY disappointed it was canceled. Not seeing it on the list does raise questions.. and false hopes.
So they didn't have a lot to talk about?
maybe they are just trying to set a precedent of only working with the Three IP's so one day when we have been completely lulled into the monotony of their release schedule, BAM they'll give us a new IP and they'll still be #1 or something.
Warcraft would have lent itself well to an adventure game.
StarCraft: Ghost was never being developed by Blizzard directly. They handed it off to Terminal Reality at first and Swingin' Ape after that. That's probably why it isn't on this list.
I think that they were canceled because Blizzard has zero ability to move outside of it's 3 main franchises.
wtf was games people play? name seems kinda redundant...
and is pax imperia on there because they stopped development and someone else picked it up?
I think Ghost was originally going to be a launch title for the Gamecube. Pretty sure it's never going to be released, despite it not being on the list of cancelled games
@Bluecell: StarCraft was a new IP. To this day it still doesn't have a (released) sequel and is the only game in its "franchise". StarCraft 64 doesn't count because it's the same game.
didn't Warcraft adventures end up being a part of WarCraft 3 (the orc storyline at least)
This is par for the course for most development studios. The majority of games are cancelled before the public ever hears of them. Only about 20% actually make it to market.
If SC:G isn't on the list, I'm willing to be that they haven't actually cancelled it, rather just take what they had and stash it in a safe somewhere until they are ready to start work on it again. The guys working on SC:G were probably moved over to the SC2 team.
Starcraft: Ghost - Keep Hope Alive.
No Rock N' Roll Racing on that list either. Sigh...
World of Star Craft: Ghost anyone ?
I remember in an interview they did, that they said they still wanna make SC:G but with the success of WoW on the PC they kinda steered away from the console market for now. Ghost is one of those projects they want to finish but with Blizzard's lack of success in the console market, I don't see it being set back into motion anytime soon.
@harlock_JDS: I think warcraft adventures was instead made into the book, I have it I just can't remember the title. It dealt with Thrall's life while being raised as a slave for Blackmoore.
I remember Warcraft Adventures back in 1997.. even a trailer was released.. adventure games were a big seller in those days..
Good to see that at least they tried to do some new IPs.. :/
Isn't it ironic that they cancel a game named "Games people play"?
I was really looking forward to Warcraft Adventures back in the day. I still have the advert for it that came with Diablo.
yeah... why isN'T starcraft ghost on that list?!?! is that a hint towards a revival of being developed? i'd be so happy if true!!
A canceled Blizzard game is still leaps and bounds better than many other games that ship.
Think about that. Blizzard doesn't even have to finish a game for it to be better than some games. Incredible, I say.
I'm amazed that STARCRAFT:GHOST was restarted so late in development.....the demo at E3 a couple years ago wasn't that bad.
I was looking forward to warcraft adventures... I thought it looked fun.
[www.youtube.com] Here is a trailer of Shattered Nations.
A current-gen Blackthorne could be really good. Come on Blizzard...take some risks.
Every major game studio has a list just as long or longer. That is the very nature of game development.
I wonder who these people were who were glad to learn of the termination of Warcraft Adventures. Most of the people I know who play Warcraft that disagree with those people.
Well, duh. What else would they be doing with all that time but starting games and then canceling them?
"YOU FORGOT GHOST!" Haha. I guess it's good to have a slow connection, otherwise I would had missed that. Nice one McWhertor.
The alt text for the picture is "YOU FORGOT GHOST!"
It seems to me like they made the right choice. Blizzard is one of the best devs in my book, still I'm pissed about Star Craft ghost, come on Blizz, is it dead or are you playing with us?
@Bluecell: Give me a break, I have a hard time to find anyone whos opinion matters that would agree with your troll comment. You are flaming them for not making shovelware and making them fast enough in other words.
I hope they make some news/updates or announcements at GDC. I love their work, even if I had to quit my WoW addiction :(
I remember really looking forward to Shattered Nations. Way back in Warcraft 2 days, it had an awesome trailer.
Why innovate, WOW = billions
Was never a fan of Starcraft, but man, I played the sh*t outta Warcraft: Orcs and Humans and Warcraft II. I would say that World of Warcraft is as much of an adventure, if not more than Warcraft Adventures would have been, in spite of my love for the classic point and click puzzle adventures, like Sam and Max Hit the Road (which I'm replaying now for old-times sake).
Of course Starcraft Ghost isn't canceled. It's coming out the same week as Duke Nukem Forever.
I wish Warcraft Adventures had become a reality. I can only assume by the image that it was to be a point-and-click adventure game with an artistic and comedic style akin to Blazing Dragons.
Starcraft Ghost for PS4 confirmed!!! Late 2015!!
Maybe they haven't dump the project yet... They just "froze" it xD
@ghnvt: Wow = 1.3 Billion, actually :D
Bliz! Look at Uncharted and do that, but as Blackthorne 2! Please.
@SzinDragon:
Still love that game...
mmm, anyone else is thinking about "World of Starcraft"??
:P
I played Starcraft Ghost at GenCon a few years back and it was pretty lame - I can totally see why it got canned. I'd prefer that they a.) take whatever steps are necessary to release a great game or b.) sweep it under the rug. I'd rather have no game at all than a half-assed game.
@ supercrap: GnR's Chinese Democracy will probably come out right around then too.
Cool. I never even knew there was potentially going to be a Warcraft Adventures, but I'm kind of glad it didn't happen. Nomad, at least from the blurry image, looks like it might have been interesting.
I could never understand the SC Ghost issues. I played a build of the game at E3 like 3 years ago and it was fairly far along. I played an xbox build and it had decent graphics and some fairly complex gameplay. I really hope they find a way to bring it to life as it would have been an awesome title. Particularly the multi player portion.
Rock 'N Roll Racing, if you have played it, actually could have a lot of potential as an MMO. With multi-world exploration (it is set on several different planets) they could call it Galaxy of Rock 'N Roll.
I don't see how BlueCell's comment is a troll, its true. They haven't created any new IPs in over ten years.
I don't blame them, Warcraft, Diablo, and Starcraft have been huge cash cows for them. There are very few studios that can say they have three properties that demand immediate attention when something new is released or announced for them.
Did you know if you type in swinginapestudios.com it goes to blizzards site?
Anyways, i think it will be a cold day in hell before Blizzard makes a new IP.
@supercrap: haha, i was thinking something along those lines as well
I'm agreeing with those in here who say that Blizzard is really big on sequels and not so much on new IPs. Heck, they haven't come out with a new IP in the past 6 years, and it doesn't look like they will in the near future, what with the ongoing work on SC2.
