Nintendo released Super Smash Bros. Brawl in Japan on January 31 and, over the course of the next four days, gamers there snapped up over 800,000 copies of the Wii fighter. Long-running sales chart topper Wii Fit was finally dethroned this week, amid a stable of new releases that also included Disgaea 3, Assassin's Creed and Suzumiya Haruhi no Tomadoi. Also debuting, but not performing quite as well as the Nintendo mascot fighter was Capcom's Devil May Cry 4 which moved nearly a quarter million units combined on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, making it one of three PS3 titles to chart in the top ten.
The best selling software in Japan for the week of January 28 to February 4, courtesy of Media Create, continues after the jump.

A 360 Game in the top 10? I need to go play the lotto...
Holy shit! Three PS3 games in the top ten.
Wow, 3 PS3 titles int he top 10. The times they are a changin'
Considering the circumstances, Disgaea 3's figures are pretty good.
I find it extremely interesting that a game for the xbox 360 can actually hit the top 10 in japan ... land of the "not buying xbox 360's".
@nootau:
Hmm, kinda happens often. Either read some previous weeks, or go back under your bridge.
Can't wait for Disgaea to hit our shores. The story seems awesome as hell.
What is that box art with Zero suti Samus from or for?
Smash is bigger than the rest of the top 10 combined. Comedy gold!
Does that mean that literaly ever 360 owner in japan bought DMC4?
Wonder what next weeks sales are going to be like.
Damn typo. I meant to say 'suit' not 'suti'.
I so over guessed the 360 version of DMC4. had it going for 200k while ps3 version was at 250k lol.
Disgaea 3 is at 55k. maybe if it reach 100k NIS america will localize it <3333
/Dreams
Is that box art suppose to be for smash bros? Do they have multiple covers to choose from?
@Perdew: well yeah, its the most high profile wii game since Galaxy. IT's the reason many people even bought the system to begin with.
Well what did you expect - how many Wiis have been sold in Japan, about 6 million or way more? Those guys need something to play :P
I don't expect any less from MGS4 sales in the first few days by the way.
Good job for all the new games it seems. They all did fairly well. Brawl dominated of course, but that was suspected. Good job to DMC4 also. Enjoying that at the moment. Also, would like to get Disgaea 3 when it comes here.
@Random J: I think the Simple Wii-esque mock box art is trying to say something to the effect of Smash Bros X : Zany Samus Suit Removal Excitement Mission.
But don't quote me on that. I never said I knew any Japanese.
@Sparx88: And 2 PS2 games....
the ps2 never cease to amaze me..... i love that little black machine
Not just the 3 PS3 top 10 titles, but Sony overall is doing much better then in the past. Last I remember the games were 50% Nintendo DS, 45% Wii, then 5% Sony, haha.
@liquid_kore: I doubt it, looks kinda unspectacular, doesn't it?
Heh heh, looks like every single Xbox 360 owner in Japan went out to buy DMC4 on release. ;)
I'm glad to see SSBB selling well, I wasn't sure if the casual heavy Wii market would mean it didn't sell very well.
It will be interesting to see the US sales for DMC4...role reversal?
dear god - that's an insane amount in four days for SSBB.
And look at that - way down on the bottom, one of the best games ever made in the history of mankiind - Animal Crossing: Wild World. Hit me up anyone that plays and wants to visit / host ect.
A quarter-million total for DMC4 ain't bad at all. But I honestly don't see the appeal of Smash Brothers. I spent the day playing my friend's copy and it seemed to be nothing but a button-mashing party game. Then again, I prefer technical fighting games, if you'd even qualify SSB as a fighting game at all.
NIS..... bring Disgaea 3 to the US plz
Haha, Animal Crossing is still on the list, if the DS version of that is still on the list, wonder how the Wii version is going to do.
Speaking of the Wii, can't really say I'm surprised about Brawl, bet thats going to be the results over here when its released come March.
@AlKusanagi: Watch it, your going to start something with them words.... certain ppl don't like it when you try to say Smash isn't technical :D
@Shinamano: Kinda obvious when theres 3 times the install base of systems in the US.
@AlKusanagi: Technical fighting games? Right. Let me know when you've actually played SSB.
@Ampillion lives a life much like No More Heroes.: See, touchy touchy
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (DS) I never heard of this, the Wii version is great!
@symphony_of_the_night: It is a freaking zombie, it can't die.
But SSBB selling 820k, holy shit! Now give me a damn european release date already, I want it bad! (did it sell out?)
Also, grats to PS3 making it to top 10 with not just 1, but 3 titles, very nice :)
@Irenicus-the one and only: Yes, they need to continue making PS2 games, for this reason that people still play it to this day.
@Kyle81: Go back to your bridge.
@AlKusanagi: Lemme try again. SSB is just as technical as any other fighting game, and to suggest otherwise is pretty silly. However, if you were just to start playing the game, and were thrown into it with people who've played for a bit, and had a spamload of items around, I could see how the fighting aspect of the game could get lost amid the chaos.
its nice to see some ps3 titles in the top ten, but its possible that they wont hold long enough like many ps3 titles in the past...
Whoa, you mean every single Japanese 360 owner bought the game?
Go go go Haruhi!
@brent_w: its DMC4, you knew it was gonna do good cross platform.
@Ashkihyena: Oh, and I'm not sure what this technical fighting games stuff is about, but if its games like Mortal Kombat where you have to pull off a certain button combination in a small amount of time, yeah, not a fan of that, cause I really suck at those.
Wow massive sales for Smash Brothers it has actually nearly catched up to Mario Galaxy in just one week !
Mario Galaxy is nearly out of the Top 30 too ...
Good to see 3 PS3 games on the Top 10 too ,DMC4 is the best debut yet for a PS3 game and Disgaea3 numbers are actually quite good better than Bladestorm and that managed some 120K units to date so NIS must be quite happy ...
Lets hope NIS translates Disgaea 3 and release it here ...
DMC4 on the 360 has made a good showing too ,only behind the better sellers as Lost Odyssey and Ace Combat ...
WIth the two versions combined DMC4 has managed 250K units ,the same as Mario Galaxy in its debut. Not bad, although it wont have the same legs ...
Can't wait for SSBB to come out here in the States. The Wii drought is getting ridiculous; the last game for it I bought for it was Super Mario Galaxy way back when.
@Kyle81: I don't believe he played the game either. It can get technical, and then to imply it ain't a fighting game...
@nootau: Its happened quite a few times when big launch titles come out.
I seriously dont get why some fucking people are so amazed when a 360 title makes it to the top 10.
Wow, MKDS it's on the list....amazing....like 2 years after
If it is that high for Japan, I can't wait to see the numbers for the US on the first day of release.
And isn't the US date on a Sunday?
@Witzbold: Heh, you're swearing quite a lot lately :P
@Witzbold: Some people just don't use their brains I guess? I mean, god forbid hardcore gamers in Japan actually buy a game that they bought a hardcore system for.
@Ashkihyena: I hope so, the way PS2 keeps going on and on like the duracell bunny I'm almost willing to change my previous speculation that it will die in 2008 to earliest the end of 2009, go go ps2 :D
@Witzbold: At least the 360 is doing much better than the old Xbox ever did in Japan. The Wii drought for the USA and Europe is getting kinda bad though. Last game I bought too was Mario Galaxy back in early December.
Not to start any needless flaming but...
I remember when Halo 3 came out, alot of Nintendo fans were saying, "just wait till Mario Galaxy comes out. With that massive install base it'll crush Halo."
Then that didn't happen and the same comments were made but with Brawl instead.
Well, again, not even close.
And it had nothing to do with the "shortages" either, since it didn't immediately sell out the whole shipment.
Now, with that out of the way, I think the fact that so many DS games and PS2 games are on the list (some of them not even close to new) is just more proof of how a system that offers a great selection of games for both the gamer and non-gamer markets is really the way to go.
That is something all 3 big companies could use to remember in regards to their new home consoles.
I think I better get my Brawl pre-order down.
@Candlejack: You aint seen nothing yet.
@Ampillion lives a life much like No More Heroes.: Seriously eh? I for one am sick of hearing stupid quirps like that.
Man its insane though the sales numbers. It seems though that nintendo has been pretty good about making sure to keep the game stocked though. Granted it did sell out super fast on the first day. But by friday night the next it seemed like some stores managed to get a restock. Today I saw more copies for sale too. Folks from all walks of life bought the game, just goes to show how loved the series is here too which is a nice thing to see.
