When David Jaffe released Twisted Metal Head On: Extra Twisted Edition he promised that there was a hidden message in the game that would reveal the next project for Jaffe's Eat Sleep Play development studio.
Well it may have been "hidden really, really, really well" but you know how hardcore fans can be. A group over at Gamefaq managed to decipher the message in record time, discovering that it reads: METAL IS COMING ON PSTHREE.
I contacted Jaffe, who's hanging at DICE this week, to see if the gamers were on the money and he confirmed they were, adding his chagrin at how fast the code was discovered and cracked. Unfortunately, he hit me with a big fat no comment when I asked him if the upcoming PS3 version of Metal was going to be hitting the console via a disc or as a downloadable.
"As for how it gets distributed, no comment :)"

Jaffe you are my hero~
I love you, David Jaffe.
oh yeahhhhhhhhhh
I've yet to try out Twisted Metal, but I'll try out a PS3 version
Awesome, just awesome. I've been around the gamefaqs boards and paying attention to this, great to get confirmation.
My money is that distribution will consist of copies sold out of Ice Cream Trucks driven by salesmen dressed as Sweet Tooth.
Hell Yeah.
This is gonna be big. Especially with online play? Just imagine.
Day one purchase
Jaffe lol you can't hide anything from Gamefaqs, people tried and always failed ;)
Great news BTW! I bet we can safely expect a GDC announcement, I can't wait for GDC.
Hopefully it'll be something like the old Twisted Metal days of part 2. Good-old teen memories...
Oh that is great news! :) And that was funny...record time. LOL!
If it's anywhere as good as TM:Black, it might be time to start saving for a PS3 finally.
Wondering when this was going to get posted here. I've been longing a next gen twisted metal..... Black was so good.
Awesome news.
Twisted Metal over a much larger online network than ever??? Count me in.
That's not really well hidden at all o_o
if it re-invigorates my sweet memories of TM:Black its a wrap! and online play? there will be mayhem. knowing jaffe he's gonna pull a warhawk... it will be psn download and disc release. so my next question is... where do i preorder?
Jaffe may I please ask that you stick me in the game somewhere?
/semijoking
Its worth a shot. ;D
I hope it's as good as motor mayhem...
meh, not really a twisted metal fan, however I could see how the franchise would get a huge boost from the online era of console gaming.
wait , is this the game were the cars have guns ?
:( i only want it if they switch it to bananas...
You know, if all these reasons to get a PS3 keep coming up, I'm going to cave in and buy one. >_<
@Setzer IIDX: Obviously you didn't watch the video to see just how hidden it was.
So this week Jaffe sort-of reveals like the 80th Twisted Metal game for PS3 and he's a populist hero; last week Miyamoto mentions that he'd like to do more Zelda and Mario games and the world burns in hate and agony.
WHERE ARE THE NEW IPZ JAFFE
@Witzbold: Witzbold in the next Twisted Metal Game for the PS3 Confirmed!
And now, I'll be buying a PS3.
@Setzer IIDX:
Yeah it was pretty much the easiest substitution code, but I'm glad they didn't make it super hard because I rather find out right away :D
@symphony_of_the_night: Why the fuck would a car shoot bananas?
Surprise!!!
@StocDred: Jaffe only was involved in a couple Twisted Metals. 989 took over Twisted Metal for a while and almost killed the franchise. Jaffe is now back, which is great, and now next gen.
Jaffe did do a new IP, "Call all Cars"
Straight numers = letter of the alphabet cypher? Come on, Jaffe, let's at least throw a Vigenere or maybe some RSA encryption on those numbers ;)
@Kyle81: arg... "Calling all Cars"
this is a dream (nightmare?) come true.
989 did TM3 and TM4. Jaffe left after TM2. I'm not sure who did Small Brawl, though.@Kyle81:
i was more of a fan of vigilante 8
Excellent news! I've been wanting to hear he'd be back to work on a new Twisted Metal game. Hooray! I loved Black when it came out, and played part 1 & 2 on the PS1 religiously. Part 3 & 4 were meh (thanks 989), but I still slightly enjoyed them. Black was by far my favorite though.
@Witzbold:
If anyone contacts you, you be sure to tell them your best friend in the world (me! XD) wouldn't mind being a part of it in some way too! =P
@StocDred:
80th twisted metal game? Yeah thankfully 989 did a crap job before and allowed Jaffe to come in an actually start the series on the right foot again, Twisted Metal has always been a bad ass series (when not done by 989), that shit is a riot - no doubt this is gonna be "da BOOOOOOOOOOOMB" as some might say.
And thank god these cars don't shoot bananas - I am not a child after all, I'll take the guns and explosions....and hopefully civilians are still out walking around as casually as ever....always classy to run em down!
I was hoping for "War of the Monsters 2". I never was a Twisted Metal Head. I have played TM2 and it was fun but Eat,Sleep,Play is not about large titles so expect the game to be light on the content.
I'm just happy to see David deciding to confirm, none of the no-comment BS. Well done on that end David. Also, I'm looking forward to it!
Very, very good news. With all his talks on expanding gameplay and evolving the franchise, I see this has an obscene amount of potential.
I hope they take their time with this. I can wait.
This could be great. I'm really looking forward to get back in the swing of TM
The on-line feature alone has MASSIVE potential. You can create custom games to choose how many players, map rotation, win count, or even make it so certain rooms are limited to one vehicle. Could you imagine playing a game with like 16+ Sweettooths? I could even see him revive the custom car feature from TM4 only with waaaay more selections so you could create your own car with custom specials/sounds and have even more competitive matches on-line
I have my doubts, but I hope it's at least as good as Black was.
Cars and guns. They go together like chocolate and peanut butter.
It's about time Sony pulled out some of it's big gun franchises for the PS3. I loved TM, TM2(the best!), Black, and Head-On.
TM3 was a throw away by the now "thrown-away" 989 Studios. And I never bothered with TM4 or TM:Small Brawl.
Was there ANY doubt?
Online. Please make it online.
@jackal888: Recent interview with Jaffe basically has him saying the whole "small game" idea has been tossed out the window. They are going for bigger titles now with this new Twisted Metal.
@CyN1caL: ditto
When can we get a photo of this information in game?
@Sparx88: You would need to record the screen and pause it at the exact right moments throughout the video. The numbers are spliced in like that notorious scene from fight club.
@Kj719: Same.
@Kyle81: Yeah, I know Jaffe's (small) resume. My point is that here's yet another franchise series game and everybody's celebrating like mad, while last week was another Nintendo crucifixion.
And whether Jaffe or 989 did the games, the point is that here's ANOTHER one. Certainly Miyamoto hasn't personally handled every Mario or Zelda game.
Personally, I'm all for good games no matter what number is behind the name and what mascot characters are present.
For those wondering there have been 7 Twisted Metal titles to date:
Twisted Metal(PS1)
Twisted Metal: World tour (PS1)
Twisted Metal 3 (PS1)
Twisted Metal 4 (PS1)
Twisted Metal: Black (PS2)
Twisted Metal: Small Brawl (PS1)
Twisted Metal: Head-on (PSP/PS2)
1,2, and Black are considered the best, and guess what? Those are the ones that Jaffe directed.
Oh man, this is like a dream come true. Twisted Metal: Black was the best in the series, IMO. Anything like it should be more fantastic gameplay. Also, I'm hoping to trash some fools in online play, so make it happen, Jaffe!
