The first in a series of EA and Steven Spielberg collaborations is Boom Blox, a Wii game that combines puzzle, physics and a seemingly tolerable version of Jenga into a working package. It may not be the Schindler's List of puzzle games, but we suspect Steve isn't aiming quite that high with his inaugural title. Looks good to me, but I'd certainly like to go hands-on before I drop a fifty on the thing.

This looks strangely quite enjoyable.
And Spielberg thinks this crap is innovative? Okay... sad to see EA waste money on publishing and marketing this junk title.
I love the style, its heartning to see Speilberg going with that kinda loveable box type....thing
yeah that looks very fun. there's alot of stuff going on for it beeing a Wii game.
I'm buying it! No kidding, I am so getting this game. Mmm build my own levels and blow em up on the Wii, instant buy.
@HykCraft: You are... unable to be described by words that wouldn't get me banned.
I think this game looks fucking awesome! It looks fun, pretty, and just plain joyful! I actually can't wait for this.
Commence flaming me in 3, 2, 1: I want this game more than Smash Bros.
You know this actually looks pretty interesting and I'm not really a fan of this type of game. Creating my own levels looks like it could be a lot of fun providing there are not huge restrictions on it.
Looks good, finally some decent wii games.
Not as bad as I thought. Still not "sold" on the idea, though, but as for the casual audience, they should eat it up, especially with Spielberg's name on it.
For me the most interesting part was the shot of a split screen where two players were demolishing each others forts. If that stays in, and is a solid feature, I am sold.
Plus, Cube based Medieval Knights! and a Level Editor!
this looks pretty fun actually, but this doesn't seem like some spielberg would do.
nice to see him branching out.
I'm still getting a Gregory Horror Show feel from the character designs... anyone else?
This seems quite innovative to me. I certainly can't recall playing anything like it.
@Tempestora: That will stay in, he said he wanted to play the game with his kids if I'm not misstaken.
Tarantino Tetris?
I fail to see SP's input on this. Does Blox's father always miss his little league games? and/or other stereoypical bad father stuff?
Spielberg's influence may be a major selling point, but it also seems already like it's going to dominate the debate on this game...
Like a poster above said, what is his input on this? Significant I would guess, but not so much that it's worth more of our conversation than the game itself.
I'm just glad that the Wii is finally getting a game with cute colourful characters. Oh wait...
Looks like simple fun to me. I wouldn't mind buying it. Not on release, but when the price has dropped to like 25-30$ or something.
Almost seems like a 3d peggle. Shoot/move one block then the rest follows suit. Kind of cool to see the chains and different minigames in this. Definitely a Wii title.
Well what do you know, it's Throw the Thing at the Thing.
I'm very impressed by the physics. I might just give this one a go, just to screw around with something for at weekend.
I watched the trailer twice and still don't get it. Looks like some mini-games and a level editor to me.
But hey, it's got explosions, coins, happy music and Spielberg!
looks fun tbh...cant believe it took Spielberg to point out to EA that the way to make money on a nintendo system is to make a game that looks and sounds like Nintendo might have made it....
Spielberg's a smart man. Someone finally realized that all human beings want is the satisfaction of building stuff and then destroying it. (ie. Tetris)
Looks quite fun! I love puzzle type games and for some reason, watching that trailer made me think of the one colossus (in Shadow of the Colossus) where you have to get him to knock down the columns and whatnot so you can proceed. I think I would have tons of fun in this game just building things and blowing them up. Consider my interest piqued!
I'm quite surprised that nobody mentioned Toblo yet.
Looks really cool, sign me up.
It's odd to me that I see the innate appeal o fthis, and yet still can't get my head around Little Big PLanet, regardless of the latter's cuter main characters. I think it has something to do with the build-then-destroy mechanisms versus the build-then-explore mechianisms.
@yhancik:
Hey that actually does look fun.
Still whenever I think of Spielberg, I think of huge productions or high quality indie work. Combining him with EA I'd expect the former (and I understand it was a collaboration with a small team), and this doesn't seem to deliver the latter. Oh well.
Surprisingly enough this looks pretty cool. Lets hope they can keep the controls tight thats going to be the main issue me thinks.
I think in an interview spielberg fondly recalls as a child building things and than the pleasure of knocking them down. He said he wanted to bring that same kind of feeling to the wii.
as my EOD pals say, the e in the formula stands for more. blow that motha up
Welp, I'm sold on it.
I'm conflicted.
On one hand, I don't really think Spielberg should get into gaming because gaming and movies are very different enterprises. I mean... how could he possible do anything but fail to grasp the fundamental differences?!?
And on the other hand...
It looks like maybe he does grasp them. That looks pretty fun. Or maybe he just knows enough to surround himself with people who know their trade on the project and merely gives his insight on some other level.
Yeah, much is left to be seen... but building shit up and knocking it down had been a big part of my youth, so they have my attention now.
It's a block-puzzle game, but it looks like it has a lot of depth to it, which is brilliant. Spielberg said he wanted to target children and families, and this game looks like it's going to do exactly that.
@dv8godd: How does Spielberg working in the film industry automatically make him unable to grasp the fundimental points of video games? You don't need a degree to understand what people find enjoyable.
Oh wow! Color me impressed! It's like those Crysis barrel-videos that always get like a bajillion hits here on Kotaku, but with objectives! Filled with antici... pation.
Looks pretty fun, definitely better than your standard EA wii shovelware (boogie). If I had a wii I'd hit it.
Well it looks entertaining enough... but I'm not really sure what the point is. All I can tell so far is that there are blocks... and you destroy them. Is there a goal to each level or are we just supposed to destroy stuff?
I hate to admit it, but this looks damn good.
Course I won't trust it until I have played it. If there is one part of video games Spielberg should be good at, its making teaser videos. =p
i don't know quite what to think about that. the graphics look appealing the gameplay looks meh. i'm not into blowing a bunch of shit up just for the sake of blowing it up. especially not if i have to put it all back together again in order to do it again.
Looks like simple fun and with a very good use of the Wiimote for a change. I would definitely give it a try at least because it looks very different and innovative.
@hrunting: There will probably be levels with specific goals. Maybe stuff like "Place an explosive block somewhere that will send the entire structure collapsing" or "Build an x with these blocks", but there will also be a free-edit mode where you can create elaborate constructions then destroy them in a comical and impressive manner.
Looks fun, but I I don't understand how what'll be the objective of each puzzle.
Looks like a combination of several game modes, One jenga, one dominoes, one blast-miner.
OMG!! Spielberg IS gonna be the next Miyamoto of gaming!!! He knows what the casual gaming demographic is exactly looking for, as well as enticing the other core demos too, just like Shiggy. This game is gonna be HUGE!
You can quote me right now: multi-million seller! Even the hardcore and (newly coined) midcore gamers are gonna get into this one!
People, you just witness a true next gen game. This is what Wii is all about. I can't get enough of this type of games..I want more...morrrrreeeeeeee!!!!
I don't see this making me cry...
@Raian1: There's a huge difference between understanding the psychology of "play" and understanding what moves us through top-down storytelling, is my point.
Yes, anyone can see "a difference"... but if you really want to get down to brass tacks, there is a tremendous amount of difference at a psychological level about what motivates people to engage in an experience pro-actively and what we can just feel compelled by as a passive member of the audience.
Don't sell the amount of energy that goes into creating a good "interactive experience" short. There is an awful lot to it. Spielberg is a pro at narrative experience... there's absolutely nothing that guarantees such skill translates well to other experience types.
You may not need a degree to "notice" what people find enjoyable... but to truly understand how and why, and to engineer such an experience well, having a degree or at least a lot of knowledge on the subject IS important. It isn't just "oh, i liked building and smashing... pop... that'll be fun." There's a lot more to it.
I so hope this comes out in Japan because Ill so fucking buy it!
Brilliant! I am higly pleased with what I see. Plus I think those blox chickens are awesome.
Holy shit!
I'm buying this for the level editor ALONE!
I could entertain myself for many many hours just setting up crazy ass block arrangements and blowing them to hell.
I have a feeling there are going to be a lot of youtube videos of this game ...
I was getting excited through the entire video, but the level editor castle being blown up by the cannon ... instant purchase ...
This game must be mine ...
.
For some reason this kind of stuff fills me with kiddie joy!
This is the type of stuff would do for hours with blocks when I was a kid ... except MY blocks didn't explode, AND I had to clean them up afterwards.
Seems hip. I will totally pick this up. If I ever get a Wii. Okay, maybe I won't, but still, looks cool.
Now that he's making his own games he'll hopefully realize that Jaws games need to be stopped and take drastic action against the makers of Jaws Unleashed. Drastic action in the form of Raptor attack!
@cchrist: Thats his other game he is making. From what I heard he has a deal to make 3 games with EA.
Am I the only one who thinks this looks good, as in Wiiware good? Not full price good.
I see shades of Jenga, Pain and some mini-game action in there... still, if the feel is "right" it could be very fun and addictive. The characters are certainly cute enough.
Was I the only one that watched the video, got excited, and started to get flashes of that horrific Jenga game that came out for the Wii?
I'm all for explosions, but the idea of moving blocks in 3d space using the Wiimote scares me a little.
Great idea... Just a lil wary of how it will be executed.
This looks actually looks like it'd be a lot of fun. Here's hoping they don't screw up the controls (like that actual jenga game that came out).
