In a series of emails with the Dallas Business Journal, 3D Realms' President Scott Miller confirmed all sorts of news about the Duke Nukem franchise of games. (We wish that anything "confirmed" about Duke Nukem didn't just make us giggle at this point.)
First and foremost, the elusive Duke Nukem Forever is slated for a late 2008 release. As for platforms, Miller explains:
We haven't formally announced any platforms for DNF...But, of course hitting the big three makes the most sense (PC, PS3, 360).As for rumors of an XBLA version of Duke Nukem 3D, those are now looking pretty legit.
The details are light, but the XBLA version will feature everything you'd expect, including online multiplayer, co-op (unspecified if that is online or not), and your typical scoreboards and achievements. 3D Realms is negotiating with Microsoft to get a release window of "sometime this year" on this title as well.
But this XBLA download makes me wonder—I've always considered LIVE's retro titles to be designed for "glory days" gamers who were looking to recapture magic of years gone by. How many of our younger readers use the service to download games that they never originally played, like Tapper or Doom? How many of you will download Duke Nukem 3D if you like the new version?

YES!
I can't wait for the XBLA game. "Those damn aliens blew up my ride!"
Which classic? 3D or sidescrollers? While the 3D was fun, man I spent so much time on an old 486 back in the day playing those sidescrollers.
I loves me some duke nukem.... Time to kill was my favorite.
Duke Nukem 3D, I presume. The original classics were sidescrolling platformers.
I have to come to kick ass and chew bubblegum but I am all out of gum.
@DashTheHand:
The sidescrollers were funny
Shake it baby!
Can't wait to buy it (the original, don't care about Forever)
yeah right, I don't believe it until it's on the shelves...
I wasn't even playing games when it was first announced, How am I supposed to be excited at the launch of this game aside from the comic standpoint.
Duke Nukem was real fun, when I was a kid, I can't see the point of a classic Duke. I never felt FPS games aged well. As for the new Duke, I can't wait :D Atleast for the awsome reception it will get >.<
@DigitalHero:
"I've got balls of steel" Classic line... DNF and a XBLA version... happy days are here again.
N-no! It can't be! The world will end once DNF is released!
They scraped the Virtual Boy version?
Yay! Duke nukem online!
LOL! ahah stop the jokes Kotaku please! :)
"classic" Duke 3D's level/weapon designs can hold it's own quite well compared to today's FPS games.
Still waiting for some weeping Nintendo fan to object to "The Big Three" referring to XBox 360, PC, & PS3.
I'd definitely download duke nukem on live arcade, especially if it had online coop.
The Duke is a lie.
On the other note, we need some REAL classics on the arcade downloads. Not this 'Retro' crap. I don't give a damn about Balloon Fighter, Nintendo. I want Chrono Trigger and Earthbound.

@Len Bias Cocaine Surplus: Good Call. They also didn't mention if its on the Saturn or not.
NOOOOO WAY! In other news, G'nR announces the upcoming release of "Chinese Conspiracy" and the sky begins to fall.
I'll believe it when it's in my hands!
I see Duke Nukem forever getting nothing but 5's and 6's from any legitimate online reviewer, just because there is no way in fucking hell this game will EVER be able to live up to the hype it's produced over the years.
In other news, I'm being pessimistic and I except some awesome ass kicking and babe-saving action, dammit.
LIES.
*Pissing in toilet*
"There, that's better!"
Man, Duke Nukem 3D on XBLA is going to be a blast! I had a ton of fun playing the original Doom over Live with my friends - I can't wait for this.
As for DNF, we'll see... we'll see...
BLOW IT OUT YOUR ASS!
2008 is what in fashion years BTW? =P
I'm still smiling from the ventrilo harrassment videos. heh~
<33 PEGGY 4EVA!!
OH HELLZ YES.
DN3D was soo bad ass.
TIME TO KICK ASS AND CHEW BUBBLEGUM...
I can't see myself paying for the original since I have no attachment to it whatsoever. I'll try out the demo so I can at least know what people are talking about. Lets hope it doesn't make people sick like Marathon.
Big three and no mention of Wii? I understand it's not a graphical powerhouse but sales wise it's definitely big! But that saying I just can't see this on Wii. to be honest i can't see it at all.
Truly this signals the coming of the end of times.
I can't wait. I'm a bit scared, though. They clearly WANT to release this for PC, 360, and PS3. But he didn't really sound too sure that it'll happen. I'm most worried about the PS3 version. If they can do a PC version they'll get the 360 out too. Either they've sunk a ton of resources into the PS3 version and they should be pretty sure it's coming out for that system, or they haven't put as much into it, and they WANT it to come out, but it probably won't. Hell, it probably won't come out for anything, anytime. But the dream is still alive! If it comes out for any system, I will buy it. If it sucks, I will buy it. It's like a ... mythical beast. Or something.
I hope PSN gets the original as well.
I'm ashamed to admit that I'll buy Forever, just as a cultural thing.I mean, shit... I bought Diakatana back in the day just to say that I had played it. And it was ugly...
I hope this game comes out and is completely amazing, or else it will be the gold standard in "Fail" within the industry for years to come.
APOCALYPSE NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
OMG let this be real please come out in 2008. Ive been waiting since high school for this damn game!!!!!
I think the only way that DNF will be able to get high scores will be taking the Duke Nukem persona and taking it to the extreme limit. That means massive amounts of profanity, gore, explosions, and of course - hardcore nudity.
Of course it will only get like 2/5 of these right and the rest will be lamed down so the Christian media won't go batshit over it. So yea, it'll probably be as good as Daikatana.
@nightmystic: You're right. The apocalypse is now. It's happening. It's always happening.
Damn. First Mass Effect and now DN. Now I need a HL2E3 trailer and the human-alien game sprawl media will be complete.
I hope we're talking about Duke Nukem 3d here...
Getting a chance to play as the "king" himself after all this time? Priceless.
*Looks at calender* Nope, it's not April 1. What's the joke, Kotaku?
I'll believe when I see it. PS3 = 1 of the Big 3, lol.
I have high hopes, and I do indeed have fond memories of all three games, plus the demo of Manhattan Project. Of course, I'm going to feel pretty sad that we've reached the end of an era (No more Duke Nukem 4Ever jokes on the vaporware lists, etc).
Only interested in the classic if it's updated versions of the platformers. Duke was better in 2D, IMHO.
lol 2008? sure.
@Spoony Bard: Chinese Democracy, natch.
I'll try the XBLA version for sure. I'm a sucker for games of the 90's.
I want duke nukem on the arcade more than I want forever. Hopefully this will make lucasarts put the orignal dark forces on and we will have the holy trinty of sprite FPS games - Duke, Doom, And Dark. :D
The 90's sure loved the letter D.
I hope they keep the strippers in the game.
I will definitely get Duke Nukem on Live. I hardly ever get anything off of it, but that title is a throwback worthy of $5. Next lets see if we can get Wolfenstein on there.
Wait, people still think that Duke Nukem Forever is going to come out someday?
LOLOLOLOL. Hey guys, I heard gullible isn't in the dictionary.
The only thing that will be more amazing than Duke Nukem Forever actually coming out will be it being any good. That said, Half-Life 2 took a while and ended up being a masterpiece, so I suppose there is at least some precedent for a perpetually-delayed game to actually be good.
DONT RUSH IT!.
I'll definitely be buying Duke3D on XBLAH, but I'm an oldie who loved playing the original. I just hope DNF can display the same level of fun and ingenuity that its predecessor did.
