Bioware today announced the first downloadable content pack for their Xbox 360 RPG Mass Effect.
The Bring Down the Sky downloadable content pack hits LIVE on March 10 at 2 a.m. PST, for 400 MS points ($5) and is the first in a series of planned downloadable content that expands the Mass Effect universe and continues the plot.
The pack will include an uncharted world that introduces the Batarians alien race. In the pack a Batarian extremist group has hijacked a mobile asteroid station in the Asgard system, setting it on a collision course with the nearby colony world of Terra Nova. Only Commander Shepard can save the millions of innocent civilians before the asteroid completes its deadly descent.
The developers say the pack will contain about an hour and a half of action and a new Achievement worth 50 Gamerscore points.
Hit the jump for a second shot from the pack.

400MS Points, pretty decent!
An hour and a half...that's quite weak, knowing it beforehand. Then again, it's just DLC.
I can't wait!

You beat me to it!
400 MS Points for 90 mins of play? WTF..
Great, I now have a deadline to pick this game up =)
Great :) Now all we need to know is whether we can use our clear data savegame or not.
They should just finish all of their DLC and then release it as a package..
Yeah, it's not really very long. But still Mass Effect.
What!? no extra sex scenes or nipple tassles?
haha Enterprise episode on Monday night on Scifi was titled "Terra Nova"
Sounds groovy. I just beat Mass Effect last week (bought it the week before), and still havn't touched the surface of the side quests and other planets in the game.
But I'm always down for more stuff. As long as it brings in a few side quests as well and a new boss battle, I'll grab it.
pics coming in just a sec.
Damn, no PC version. Oh well
/waits
$5 for 90 minutes seems about right. For $60, that'd come out to 18 hours.
Besides, I'm always in favor of anything that gives me another excuse to play Mass Effect again.
True it may not be the longest expansion pack but the price seems right to me. How many people pay $8 or $9 for a movie that is an hour and a half? So paying $5 for more Mass Effect goodness is fine by me.
Aren't all these DLC that are comming out now supposed to be in the damn game in the first place?
If MS hadn't been so quick to release this game (which basically resulted in massive castration) we wouldn't be paying for this in the first place!
If this becomes the next mainstream method of delivering gaming content, this would basiacally mean all games cost $60 Dollars + Alpha. Why do we even bother selling DVDs in the first place? Just make it all episodic like sam and max!
I did every side quest in the game save one during my first ME playthrough (Completionist/Asari Ally ftw), so new content will always be appreciated.
@Brian Crecente: do the pics contain cosmic rape scenes?
400 points and bonus achievement points? Nice.
I liked Mass Effect a great deal.
But if I gotta drive that Maco up another dammned cliff in the DC, I'll probably let it go.
Nice news. They kept their word with episodic content and 400ms points ain't too bad. Make a hands on please when it is released, oh and Bioware, announce the PC version please. That or the release of Dragon Age.
@alextz: Yes, very confusing. My character just passed the game and is still on the main planet. Can I get to this extra content right away? Do I have to play some more of the first part of the game again?
@Father ColdCuts: The second pack will have anal orgasmic rape.

I hoped it would be a patch to remove that rampant homo-porn so my 4 year old could play it.
I jest'd!
Really though, that was the announcement?
Badass, Definitely picking this up. Kinda wish you can continue after the game ends tho, like after the story not starting a new game with the same character; side stories like these would fit in perfectly while we wait for ME2
I wonder if we can solve the conflict in a very James bond way... For Queen and country of course.
If you don't get it, sleeping with the enemy. Ooh, that's an idea! Sex as a weapon for taking over other worlds!
And Fox news quotes me
as an official release in 3... 2... 1.
Hey thats pretty cool.
@Bishmon: That is per each playthrough, not total. So as we all know you can expect to play it multiple times.
THIS IS WHAT I'M TALKING 'BOUT. Seriously folks, these guys are the real-deal. Bioware is investing in this franchise and we're going on a trilogy trip that is gonna be worth every gaming minute we invest in it. What better way to extend the latest game than by DLC, until the next chapter comes along as a standalone store-shelf purchase! I'm so sold on this. Bioware, you've got a Mass Effect fan for life. Thank you!
My god ... they've gone beyond even episodic content. A half-hour of content? For 400 points? They're either crazy or fucking greedy.
This sounds like the plot was lifted (with a couple of changes) from that episode of Enterprise last night. Freaky.
YES! Finally a deal that doesn't make me feel like a putz for dropping the dough. So uch better than getting 3 maps at $10 or some plane skins for $2 or a Bomb-up Pack for 150 ms points or bad retro game port for $5 or buying a key to content already on the disc for $1 or...
@Luis: As aman of the cloth I cannot condone such things. I need to know co i can later condemn it... Honest... AMEN!
@gummyworm: Except Bioware announced from the beginning that the plan all along was episodic content released in between the game releases.
This sounds pretty sweet. I've been needing a good reason to play through mass effect a third time! DLC!
@Strangelove: One and a half hours.
@Strangelove: "The developers say the pack will contain about an hour and a half of action..."
Not a half-hour.
Sweet...now I can kill Batarians...those sleezy aliens are going to get it!
This is good news! I just completed Mass on Sunday night.
Good deal. If 800 points is all right for 3 frigging maps then 400 is grand for 90 minutes more of sweet blue alien goodness. I'm sold.
@gummyworm: Wait what, ME was rushed? Didn't know that...what castration do you mean, from a technical aspect e.g. graphics?
@disavian: Almost every plot.. no , every plot in Enterprise was pretty much taken from the other ST series. And considering the number, it's kinda like trying to do something the Simpsons haven't done, in space.
On a side note, I had a completely different image of what Batarians looked like from reading the book.
Hopefully the PC version will come out, like Jade Empire did, with all the bugs fixed and a better combat system, additional content and higher rez graphics. Yum. But in a year. Sad.
The dude on the picture looks like a happy ant man!
@Strangelove: And you've gone beyond poor reading skills. It's an hour and a half, not a half an hour.
I love that they're doing this, and wish they'd announced it before I sold my copy on eBay. I would have held onto it if I'd known there was DLC to be had.
I love how people blow up at this announcement... when really that's a pretty fair price for a 90 minute mission.
I'll be buying it without a moment's hesitation. I <3 me some Mass Effect.
@Strangelove:
The developers say the pack will contain about an hour and a half of action and a new Achievement worth 50 Gamerscore points.
aka 90 mins.
I think I'll wait until most of the DLC has been released, it will probably be cheaper anyway then paying $20 for 4 new expansions (assuming there are 4).
Mako driving will consume 40 of those 90 minutes.
Eh, 5 bucks for an hour and a half isn't too bad at all. But, this isn't really huge news like they made it out to be. They could have just said they were releasing DLC without all the hype tactics.
@HykCraft: 400 points is like $5. That is pretty decent by expansion standards. Most of Oblivion's expansions were between $10 and $20.
So, you're saying it's an hour and a half?
@Strangelove: I do believe that the last line there says hour and a half, not just a half-hour.
I'm looking forward to this one, we get to finally see the Batarians after they were just a footnote in the codex and a bit of back story. More Mass Effect is definitely a good thing.
People! Judge this by the cost of a movie. That's how I do it... it's $5 for 1.5 hours? That's like twice the value of going to see a movie, and you're getting alot more entertainment out of it.
That's how I justify these things... if it's not at least better than the value of a movie, I generally won't pick it up. That's one reason why games are so worth it in general!
