Yeah, that overhyped Gears of War 2 GamePro article has been trashed by Epic honcho Mark Rein, who called the article "complete nonsense." Since the developer hasn't given the magazine an exclusive, what the hizzy heck does the article actually say? Kotaku commenter Willows sent us a scan of the article. It reads:
Gears of War 2 hasn't officially been announced yet, but our sources rumor that the sequel to the Xbox 360 hit is indeed coming in 2008. And what better way for Microsoft to counter Metal Gear than with a few gears of its own.But it's not enough to just retread shooter territory in Gears 2. The first game was great, but it didn't blow anyone away with originality. It simply put all the best aspects of other shooters into one amazing package. And aside from the obvious graphical superiority and online co-op mode, most of Gears of War was standard shooter stuff.
Yep! Hit the jump for the rest of the article:
What should we expect? In Gears 2, expect a slight graphical boost. We also think four-player co-op is a must this time around. Seeing as how a number of other games are doing the team co-op thing, Gears 2 shouldn't slack in that department. Overall, the multiplayer will probably see the most changes in the sequel. Though definitely fun, Gears of War's online multiplayer component was no-frills. Expect a better matchmaking system, more game modes and better ranking.What shouldn't we expect?
Don't expect anything crazy or revolutionary. This probably won't be a game that blows down doors and bends genres. The graphics probably won't be a huge jump over the first game simply because there's not a lot of leeway there, as the first game was already so graphically impressive. Also, don't expect anything crazy on the online side like customizable video sharing. This is an action-packed shooter and Epic will surely be sticking to the heavy action stuff.It's certainly possible for Gears of War 2 to slip into 2009, but we think Microsoft is pressing Epic to deliver the game by the holiday season of 2008. That's when it could help the Xbox 360 the most.
And this was worth mentioning on the cover? Not once, but twice?!

I am totally shocked that a publication would use a misleading headline to get more buys.
Huh.
That's some exclusive you've got there, GamePro.
"And what better way for Microsoft to counter Metal Gear than with a few gears of its own."
Yuck. Both Games are fine but I woudn´t trade apples for oranges or the other way around. What a stupid statment.
Next thing you know, they've started advertising pre-orders for Duke Nukem Forever.
Must be really, really desperate to sell magazines.
Wait, where does it claim it is an exclusive. Most of this sounds like speculation. Did they actually say it was an exclusive? I'm confused.
They told me everything I could guess before reading the article... a masterpiece of journalism.
most of Gears of War was standard shooter stuff."
yesss !
"The first game was great, but it didn't blow anyone away with originality"
Halo didn´t as well but that didn´t stoped them to have good reviews on magazines like "omg the best thing evar soo original".
Wtf...
@AnEternalEnigma:
you and me both...
"standard shooter stuff". I think this guy needs his ass kicked. This article should read "Warning: the following article has been pulled straight from our ass and should not be taken seriously."
is it just me or was most of that saying that gears of war 1 was a shitty game? that was like 75% put downs and 25% rumor
Journalism at its best.
this just adds to reasons I hate gamepro
Jeez, that's kinda pathetic. Any Gears fanboy can get his speculation for free on the internets...thanks, though. -10 for GamePro!
i love how pretty much all of this information is completely obvious.
lots of people had lots of gripes about the multiplayer, so they say they will probably fix some of that. great reporting there gamepro.
@PITwelve:
1. I agree
2. Your avatar is amazing.
@Wyld: Your stupidity burns my eyes as if were acid. Please, go home.
@AnEternalEnigma: You just broke my Sarcasm meter.
I don't really see the word "exclusive" anywhere in the article or on the cover, but it is still nonetheless a dirty trick of GamePro to sell a few more magazines.
But can you really blame them? what with the internet and all.
Metal Gear...Way Better than Gears of War will ever be. hell, I consider the first 3 MGS games better than Gears of War. the only thing that got me by surprise was the graphics. MGS4 FTW. now I got to go preorder MGS the essential collection.
not revolutionary?
i thought the story was the most terrible thing ever, but the gameplay was amazing. it was definitely revolutionary in the gameplay department
MS is going to use GoW2 to make a big sales push and apparently so is GamePro. Way to flush your credibility down the drain.
So... what's "exclusive" about this article?
This is basically an elongated version of The Quartermann's column in EGM, focusing on one game.
Tisk tisk GamePro.
it's not lying, it's enhancing the truth to the detriment of others for personal benefit!
I have a slight feeling that Gears of War and Metal Gear cater to vastly different audiences. This article was just stupid.
"hey guys lets all keep our 360s cool and break them at the same time by putting them upside down on a unsteady hard drive" seriously, are they retarded? the 360 wasn't designed well, but they designed it to run in the vertical position just as well as the horizontal, air is sucked under between the gaps that the rubber feet provide, anyway this entire article is utter crap, and they just pulled stuff outta their ass and smeared it in a magazine. *steps off soapbox*
@AnEternalEnigma: Of course, those of us at Kotaku know nothing of misleading headlines.
Wow, good job trying to mislead us. Shows how much you value your readers, GamePro.
@TheNocturnalSun: Did you play the same game I did? Oh wait, yes, it had the chainsaw bayonet. Revolutionary indeed. And for all the hype the graphics get, I thought they were disappointing. Not that they weren't good, but I was expecting the proverbial eye melting graphics, and they just weren't there.
My sources tell me that GamePro won't be getting any exclusives with Epic for a long while.
is gamepro owned by gamespot
@seafisch:
:-| ...
Thats why Gamepro's credibility is, and has always been in the toilet :)
Not surprising in the least. I suppose I should stop looking foreward to any new Too Human info in that mag about now too.
Why does the enemy in the last picture look like a Chimera from Resistance?
I think it's pretty much a nonsense story, but Kotaku should know better than posting an entire story online -- taking quotes is cool, but outright theft is wrong. You guys are better than that ... that material is copyrighted, and using the complete story is far beyond fair use.
As I said in the other story, this is a horrible, cheap ploy that wouldn't be a decent article even if it was tucked away in the back of the issue. And that 360 "trick" is the worst advice I've heard since that one guy loudly suggested through his car window that I perform fellatio on him.
common sense lol
that was a waste of paper game pro. i never read you before and i'm not about to start
@jayntampa:
I think the goal was to save John Q. Shopper from utter disappointment upon realizing that there is no Gears Of War exclusive story in the magazine, just a bunch of rumors and speculation.
I understand what you're saying, but I think the 'Taku did us all a big favor on this one.
Thanks. I saved myself some money for not buying that magazine to find that nonsense! Thank you internet!
This game totally rips off Metal Gear for having the word Gear in the name and God of War for being able to be abbreviated as GOW. Why people, are you not shouting from the highest mountains that this game is a sham?!
gow2 coming to 360? wow like people didnt suspet that already. who do they have working over at gamepro... Inspector Clusso?
GoW not revolutionary? I think that it can be argued that is one of the more revolutionary games of this generation considering most games now have some sort of cover system involved. Gamepro elevated my hopes and crushed my dream in less than 2 days. Kudos.
@PapaBear434: The Brumak? I'm pretty sure the Brumak was revealed to the public before Resistance was. I swear it was in the first GI cover story. I'm not trying to bait Resistance fans, just trying to provide an answer. Hell, I'm still pissed about the "appearance" of said Brumak.
lol gamepro. anyone who still buys that rag deserves a fate worthy of a Darwin award. I remember when they cut the magazine size down tremendously I figured that they would use the remaining space for solid info. Guess I was wrong.
Gamepro! Get yer two month old information and rumor-mongering here! Get yer Gamepro! Why get for free what you can pay 6$ for?
Publications are never wrong. That's how I know that the PS3 is a failure and that Jeff Gerstmann was fired over unrelated issues! Oops.
"complete nonsense" is an understatement. It's like cartoon wars episode II, except they only gave the manatees a select batch of words that only concerned shooters. Kudos for the manatees... or maybe some good fish. Ok, I admit, that was a bad comparison.
what if gears II gets rpg elements? hmm? what if it's not a shooter at all but an old school platformer? OMG the possibilities.
I found the little tip box more informational. Maybe it should have read obvious tip #4, but then again my firend's 360 blew up on him before it even had a chance to get hot, so, who knows...
Bashcraft,
surprised to hear u bash the game(no pun intended) do u really think the game is overrated? cuz i hear many people jocking the game as the holy grail of gaming, so it's interesting to hear your opinion.
I just looked closer at the picture... Has anyone flipped their 360 upside down vertically to keep their system cool? Could this be the great end all answer for the rrod? Was this magazine meant for april?
SHENANIGANZZZ!!!!!1111111!!!
I dont see where it says "exclusive" on Game Pro's cover, all I see is "special report"!
Why does everybody love the graphics so much. It's so weird on an HDTV. All the Unreal games are. The textures are very detailed, yeah, but they're moving all over everybody's faces.
@zanzibarlegend: hmm, I could be blind, but I dont see him bash the game o.O
Amazing! When sales are low, just whip up a full-page speculation and watch the numbers jump!
Hell, why not say the same for other major titles? Save those for later issues, natch. Witness:
HALO 4 INSIDE!
Article:
We expect this to be either a last-run game for the 360 or the launch title for Microsoft's next system. Expect more of the same: four-player co-op, video recording and sharing, and smart matchmaking. As for graphics, we don't know, because the game would be so far off we're just making this shit up. Seriously, it worked for Gears Of War 2.
@EnigmaNemesis:
Yes, thank you. Can somebody please tell me where they said this was an exclusive, 'cause I wouldn't have assumed that by looking at their article or the cover.
@kashraz: That thing would topple all the time because of the hard drive's width and the little slope on top. It's not a very good idea, it's not even a decent idea, just a poorly thought out one.
Man, Microsoft was so up on Gamepro ass!!
@Erwin:
Ohhh, that was me! No no no, you got it all wrong...
I was saying "How about you suck my drift," like in The Fast And The Furious.
I can understand the mistake, they sound so similar.
"upside down vertical for maximum cool" = phrase of the year, Gears = epic, Gamepro = fail.
I agree with the camp that thinks that Gears of War is overrated. I never, ever understood what was supposed to be so special about that game. It truly had nothing special outside of the
