While we'd already seen the pre-order at places like Play Asia, Konami has confirmed their upcoming Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection for PS2. Retailing at $29.99, the package includes the original Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2 (director's cut) and Metal Gear Solid 3. It's not as sweet as Japan's MGS Anniversary Collection—a purchase that I considered momentarily in Akihabara before realizing that something might be lost during those conversations with Otacon in my non-native tongue.
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. - February 5, 2008 - Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc. today confirmed speculation that Metal Gear Solid ®: the Essential Collection is currently planned for the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system. Now Metal Gear Solid fans have the final chance to fully immerse themselves in the Metal Gear Solid universe before the release of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots."Since its inception, the Metal Gear Solid franchise has been one of the most successful game series in the history of video games, receiving worldwide recognition and praise," said Anthony Crouts, Vice President of Marketing for Konami Digital Entertainment Inc. "Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection represents a great value for gamers, bringing together three must-have classic titles which pioneered the stealth action genre."
Metal Gear Solid: the Essential Collection includes the original Metal Gear Solid for the PlayStation game console, the director's cut of Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3 in a commemorative package with artwork by renowned Metal Gear Solid artist Yoji Shinkawa.
Metal Gear Solid: the Essential Collection is rated M for Mature by the ESRB and sells for a suggested retail price of $29.99. For more information visit the website at www.konami.com.

Considering I paid $49.99 for each of these games, not including the VR missions. I say its a pretty decent deal.
Is this coming to europe then?
Jackpot.
Now you can buy all the games you already have again! In actuallity thats a pretty good deal for for people who dont have the games. But I would imagine that number is pretty small. How many of you kotakuites dont have the metal gear games and plan on getting this?
Not including Substance or Subsistence = Not-So-Essential Collection.
Is it the Director's Cut of MGS3 also? The phrasing isn't specific. Because I'd hate to get it if MGS3 had the original, awful, camera system.
This thing is worded as though it MIGHT have Substance, I guess (or feature parts of it, like the different-colored IR goggles and European Extreme mode).
I never got to play the mgs series. This might give me a chance to see why everyone's all hyped up for mgs4.
@Deadeyereborn: Me, me and possibly me. Oh and you. You better buy it.
@GhaleonUnlimited: i agree. at least give us subsistence
If you don't have them, buy this. If you already have them, why buy it?
@Pooster: You won't be disappointed
Its a total steal for collectors though.
@Deadeyereborn:
I don't have it and I might pick it up. I've never really played a MGS game.
Anyway, I'm playing 10 year old games atm anyway (picked up and completed Half Life Anthropology). I only have to complete the other 10 odd games I have in the backburner. >_>
Will pick up for sure, just to have it.
Director's cut? Does that mean Substance/Subsistence? I have the regular version of 2, the Subsistence version of 3, and the Twin Snakes version of 1, so it might be worth it if 2 is the Substance version.
i own em all but the covers...they are just exquisite
@GhaleonUnlimited:
it includes them both.
the director's cut of Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3. It pays to read my friend :)
remake for psp pls :P
@GhaleonUnlimited: They are Substance and Subsistence. That's what it means by 'Director's Cut'.
Since I've never played MGS before I am probably going to buy this to see if I should care at all about 4. I don't have a PS1 memory card anymore so I won't be able to play the original but getting the second two for 30 dollars is actually quite nice.
I never bothered picking up Substance or Subsistence, so this is looking like quite the bargain.
@Deadeyereborn: I don't have any of them. I only came to the PS2 after Guitar Hero II came out so I am more than a bit behind in playing great PS2 games. I'm playing Resident Evil 4 now.
I wonder if I should pick this up as I contemplate getting a PS3 and ultimately MG4.
Are *all* three games worth it?
Dr. SP
Damn it. I'm going to buy this. I already have the games in some form or another, but I am lacking the PS1 version of MGS (have the cube one) and the Substance version of MGS2. I will feel like a true MGS nerd buying this. I suppose I should think of it as another pair of pants. You can always have another pair.
@DrStrangepork: Definately , they're essential if you're gonna get MGS4.
Never could get into this series. Got the first on release and was frustrated by the controls. Same with the second. Didn't bother with the third after that.
I have all versions of the aforementioned Metal Gears, and many other collectibles. And I'm tempted to buy this as well...yes, I know I'm a fool
I wonder if MGS will be as good as I remembered it to be?
This collection does indeed come with mgs 1, mgs2 substance and mgs 3 subsistence.
How come its not as good as the Japanese version.... Does the Japanese version come with something different
i'm getting it. just to good to pass up on
@DrStrangepork:
Of course they are. If you plan to buy MGS4 then you MUST have them
I'm just glad i was able to get my hands on the legitimately limited edition of MGS 3 subsistence. so all in all I'll probably still buy this due to my crack addict needs to all things Metal gear related.
The MGS PS1 is better than Twin Snakes in just about everything except graphics. The voice acting is better in the original (although, nearly all the same actors are there), the music is INFINITELY better. "The Best is Yet to Come" is one of, if not the best theme song, with "Snake Eater" dueling for the top spot. The first-person aiming in TTS pretty much broke the game, much to its detriment, making it entirely too easy.
For those of you who haven't played the original, play it! Twin Snakes is akin to a remake with none of the same spirit of the originals, or the main-storyline games.
Nice but... meh. No need for it. I already have all of the games but Substance, and I can get that cheaper used.
Not a bad price for newcomers, though. Not bad at all!
Get it and find out for yourself why I stopped after playing the second one...my god that was awful. Pretentious yet not interesting. That's a feat.
However, if i still had a ps, i would pick it up for some nostalgia (1) and for something new (3)... :-(.
I'm surprised they included a non-Twin Snakes version of MGS1. Seems like Nintendo has locked down SOME non-1st party content.
Sold. The PSX version of MGS was better than Twin Snakes IMO. The Gamecube version had edited and altered voice overs and they removed TAPPY Iwase's music score and replaced it with Norihiko Hibino's crap.
i'll be buying this hopefully in time for my PS3. Never really got into the whole MGS phenom but I like the look if MGS4 so why not give the others ago
For no good reason, I own none of these titles in their regular or director's cut incarnations.
/instantpurchase
I own all three games, including the original PS version of MGS and the regular and remixed versions of 2 and 3. I will still be buying this. I love Metal Gears.
@SnakeCL: You tell em man! If it wasn't for the fact I don't need this collection, I'd be disappointed that a classic was tossed aside for a flashier remake. Rob Zombie's rendition of Halloween was nice, but I'll take John Carpenters version any day.
@Bowlynee41x: Well, while Twin Snakes was good, it wasn't the definitive original. It's just not the same. I'd say it lacks the "soul" of the original.
@SnakeCL: I agree completely! I'm buying this (even though I have Twin Snakes, MGS2: Substance, MGS3: Subsistence) just for a PS1 copy of MGS... and the nifty box art!
Nice collection, if someone missed MGS pick this up asap.
@Deadeyereborn: I will be picking it up at release. I never really got into the series. So I figure now is a good as time as any. Hopefully I love the series half as much as some of the diehard fans out there.
But Subsistence includes the ORIGINAL Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake from the NES...so...does THAT mean we get those two gamse on top of the three? i don't think so, but that is a huge question. The "director's cut" could mean something different than referring to substance and subsistence.
in my opinion, substance isn't worth it by itself, the original MGS2 is good, but MGS3 subsistence kicks so much ass over the original MGS3 (camera, 2 NES MGS games, online)
I seriously hope the PS1 version of the original MGS includes the VR missions and extras that was released on the Japanese version of MGS: Integral.
=/
Twin Snakes was great graphics-wise. They took out Naomi's british accent and the japanese girl's accent, making their voice overs bland and PC.
Otherwise, I remember everything else being left relatively intact. Am I remembering wrong?
@Deadeyereborn: *raises hand* The only MGS game I ever played was the first one, and I never actually beat it or owned it. This deal is so absolutely delicious.
KEWL! I can keep my original MGS in mint condition and play off this instead. The upscaling from the PS3 should make them look NICE!!
@Spoony Bard:
Some lines of dialogue was changed. I vaguely remember being pissed at Grey Fox's altered dialog.
You know, what with Snake being in Brawl and all, that they would release this compilation on the Wii as well, maybe even give the controls a bit o that RE4 magic. I mean really now, come on.
@Spoony Bard: The cutscenes were all butchered to be cool. Kitamura directed new cutscenes for the game.... might have seen some of his Japanese movies, but pure style over substance and just overall :P .....
Oh, and I am guessing this will not work with those 40 gb PS3s out there.
@Deadeyereborn:
I've never played a MGS game before, so I may consider picking this up.
@jive238: "Now Metal Gear Solid fans have the final chance to fully immerse themselves in the Metal Gear Solid universe before the release of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots."
Not to offend Wii owners (being on myself), but I'm pretty sure they're targeting the Playstation crowd with this. Besides, adding the "RE4 Magic" would ruin the games, and I doubt they would rework each game anyway. But hey, maybe they'll rework Twin Snakes with the Wii Mote! Eh.
Hopefully its the MGS2 director's cut with the Twin Towers going down.
*patiently waits for EU announcement*
<- hasn't played any of the MG games yet...
Definitely picking this one up. ^^;
Does anyone know if this game can be played in PS3?
