The upcoming GamePro issue hitting newsstands February 12th entices gamers with a "special report" on Epic's Gears of War 2—the game we all know is coming but has yet to be announced to the world. So did GamePro score the scoop? According to Epic's Mark Rein, they did not.
It is complete nonsense. We have not announced a sequel to Gears of War to Gamepro or anyone else for that matter.This response, of course, does not write off the possibility of hot gossip or legitimate leaks. But don't expect six pages of centerfold-quality Gears 2 porn or any official confirmation.

thats a big kick in the nuts for gamepro
We can wish, right?
.
.
.
Right?
@WallaJoy- I has a bucket.: NO! SHAME ON YOU FOR HAVING WISHES!
I would be so pissed at Gamepro if I bought it reading the cover to find 1 sentence about what they think and then to top it of it gets shot down by Epic.
Someone take your issue of the mag and hit the can and wipe that thing clean.
I typically dislike FPSs.
But I really liked GoW. I am looking forward to the eventual sequel.
Why doesn't Epic just announce Gears 2 already?
No Gears of War 2 porn.. Ugh, does this mean GamePro is gonna be showing us Cliffy B. centrefolds..
..
...
:S
@iamnotdryad:
I agree. The first one was hyped up so much, why aren't they doing the same for the sequel?
@ComradeStalin: SHAME ON YOU FOR NOT HAVING HAVING WISHES!
@Murph1908: That's probably because Gears is a TPS. :)
@ComradeStalin: *sigh* You make me sad.
Who here thinks GoW is even a 2008 release? I'd put my money on spring 2009, personally.
Oh and GamePro is garbage, what a shock ;)
@DaiMacculate: Same here. As far as I know, most AAA titles take more than two years; a cycle I hope Mass Effect can break without leaving behind quality.
Makes me happy that I unsubscribed for that garbage back in 2005. Feed it to the sharks.
I think it'd be pretty awesome of Rein announces GoW2 at GDC.
Granted, if it was bullsh*t, why did he not mention it being a Photoshopped job or anything?
HAHA @ Gamepro.
@DaiMacculate:
I would feel like GoW2 would be a disappointing title if it were rushed to be out before 2009. I'd rather they take their time and don't fall victim to the sophomore slump.
I bet Gamepro will claim an "anonymous" insider source.
@iamnotdryad:
Rushed? Look at Insomniac with Resistance and Ratchet with Resistance 2 following. Three games, 2006, 2007, 2008. Gears 1 was developed alongside Unreal Engine 3. Gears 2 has the engine already built.
Yea, I read this blog this morning and had a chuckle moment.
Who reads gamepro anyways.
@DigitalHero:
Yes, I did say rushed. Congratulations to Insomniac but I don't own a PS3 so I couldn't really give two shits about what they do. I don't think you really got my point, either. My point was that I'd rather see Epic take all their time with Gears 2. I want a sequel that lives up to Gears of War; not a DMC2.
GamePro still owes me back issues from 1995! They refused to change my address for the remaining issues when I moved. Man those guys suck.
I hate GOW.
Hah, you can't tell if I mean Gears or God of War!
That's actually my point though, I love them both.
:)
I got a gamepro subscription for buying halo3 or something like that. anyway, I got this issue awhile ago, the funniest thing is this. the whole issue talks about big time up and coming shooters. this is where they have a tiny of all tiny rumor section for "gears2". the best part about it, is that earlier in the issue they have a small interview from somebody involved in EPIC.
I probably should wait to submit this cause im at work and dont have the issue with me, so I dont know what exactly was asked said, but it was something along the lines of.........."so can you tell us any info on gears 2", "yeah, tell them (MS) to ask us to do a sequel."
Can't people sue, when obvious lies are published?? Game mags have to watch out in their quest of 'exclusives' otherwise one day, they just may get bitten in the Ass!! espacially these days where people sue people for the smallest reasons.. A developer may just do that one day!.....
@johnnylineup:
A desperate attempt sell magazines?
Anyhow, the original Gears of War wasn't all that great anyway. The multiplayer was fun, but had a severe case of latency and delay. I got the "Seriously..." achievement but the "I Can't Quit You Dom" achievement refused to unlock. Later, I found out it was a known issue from a Microsoft employee who was on Gears project that I knew.
Gamepro spewing complete shit? Holy shit, has someone missed their whole publishing history?
I'm sure it's just a quick way to get some more readers.. I'm guessin there's only a couple of lines about "What we would like to see in GoW 2" or something.
This makes me want to buy a subcription to their magazine and then cancel it in protest. And I don't even like Gears of War.....
This is the Gamestop approach to journalism (I know that their magazine is 'Game Informer' but follow me on this one). Gamestop makes up their own "release dates" to generate pre-orders because they know that the game will come out eventualy and if anyone challenges them on it they can always state " An inside source said it was so ", so in the same vien, why can't GamePro make up a story about a game that everyone and their dog knows will come out eventualy in order to generate subcriptions?
It is good to see that it is already starting to backfire on them.... I am just waiting for GamePro's "It was all Deep Throat's fault defence"......
Epic needs to hire a spokesperson that doesn't tick people off as much as Mark Rein does. God that guy is obnoxious.
When I got it in the mail a week ago, I was excited to see Gears 2 being mentioned on the cover.
As people who have read it already will probably know, there are no big details on the game. So it's really not that big of a story anyway. It's more of a prediction.
The official announcement will come at GDC, along with some game info. I know this for a fact.
Its all to sell more magazines. And with that I'll repeat what I did on the last story:
Which makes less sense?
A) How many years Gamepro has been in publication.
B) How many years According to Jim has been on the air.
I can't believe I'm the first to say it... but Gamepro got PWNED!
I can't believe Gamepro is still around. They got owned big time here.
I told Mark Rein about this. I'm glad he finally responded.
Now, I can gloat and say "I told you so".
this is simple. gamepro was clearly trying to sell their mag. how sad.
gamepro was and always will play second fiddle to egm, who despite becoming slimmer still gets better scoop on the big games.
@WallaJoy- I has a bucket.: Gears came out in 2006, and the game engine, gameplay, story, and main characters are already developed (even if not shared with the gamers). It would not be unlikely for it to release this year.
I give it 60 days before Epic "OFFICIALLY" announces GoW2.Seems to me Game Pro might have spoiled Epic and MS' surprize.
ProTip: GAMEPRO has been trash for more than a decade.
I wonder, would the "Gears of War 2" issue be the April issue....? If so, that joke got trounced fast.
Mark Rein...such an appropriate last name. Always Reining them back in.
Obviously, a Gears sequel will happen, but they're taking their sweet time with it. It just sucks for M$ since that would be the only title to really push the 360 this year. Everything else is just coating for us folk that already have the system.
This year is going to get a lot of gaming out of my PS3. Especially since as of this year all my multiplat purchases are also on the Sony machine. Tired of the dying helicopter sounds of my 360. ;)
GamePro. God that's funny. Now what about the cover?
Akuma can also be found in Resident Evil 2, guys.
@sascha23: "Mark Rein...such an appropriate last name. Always Reining them back in."
Watch out! The Pun Train is a-coming and you're tied to the "raayyylllss!"
Mark Rein is a just a sleazy git. His primary concern is for himself and how much money Microsoft, Sony and Unreal licencees give him.
Not a comment on Epic games as a whole, just their Vice President. With his lies he should work for Sony or become a politition. Epic would truly shine if he left the company.
That's GamePro for you.
Hands down the worst gaming magazine EVER. I can understand a kid reading it, but any grown adult still subscribing, reading, or buying GamePro needs to take a long look at their life and say "Why am I not reading EGM instead?"
@Grave of the Fireflies: Mark Rein is a nice guy in person. I met him once while I was in Boy Scouts (we actually had a meeting at Epic HQ) and he gave everyone there a free copy of UT2K4 (this was two weeks before the game was supposed to hit shelves, btw). He also talked to us for a good hour and a half about the industry. If all he cared about was money, he wouldn't have wasted his time talking to us and giving us free games. You probably shouldn't make negative comments about a guy you probably haven't met.
thats why I don't believe Surfer Girl rumors...
