Holiday time! Earlier this week was the Setsubun. You can read about it here. It's the day before the start of Spring according to the Japanese lunar calendar. Anyway, in the Kansai area (where I live), people buy long, uncut sushi rolls and eat them facing Southeast (actually, it's between South and Southeast). Talking is not allowed! After dinner, I put on a demon mask and my family threw soybeans at me, chanting "Demons out! Luck in!" The head of the household typically wears the mask, and the beans symbolically purify the house of bad luck and whatnot.

Yes, the beans hurt. A lot.
