It's been over a year and some change that Dragon Quest IX: Defenders of the Starry Sky was first announced for the DS &mdash and about a half a year that it was announced the game would be delayed to 2008. When talking about Square Enix's M&A business strategy, company honcho Yoichiro Wada tells Bloomberg:
It's almost finished... The balance of single play and multiplayer is very important... Because it's such a big title, we didn't want to rush it out.
Fair enough! We're patient. We can wait.

Great, a reason to become more hopelessly addicted to my DS. 30-40 hours of my life lost while rocking back and forth in the corner, here I come.
This is going to be great. Though, I wonder when we will get it in the states. They should port those DS remakes of the older games in the meantime to soothe the pain of the waiting.
Sweet, soon there will be another game for 90% of American DS owners to pirate.
It is interesting to see that DS games are getting high production values. From my past experiences with handheld games, the production values are lacking compared to console counterparts.
Man, my work is going to be PISSED at me after this comes out....
How is this going to support Multiplayer? I Hope they are able to pull it off though. I mean i don't konw. I don't want Dragon Quest i want a new Chrono games. Think about the long time fans. Maybe just maybe a proper sequel to Xenogears. Please don't bring up Xeno Saga we both know it wasn't a proper sequel or prequel.
@Shindokie: Don't you think if they thought a new Chrono game was viable (or possible, maybe there's some underlying factors that make it a non-option at this point) they'd have made it by now or at least announced something?
@Lemming To The Sea: I actually don't. It is possible but to actually make it any good as Chrono Trigger is what worries me. I have so much love for the game i'm just scared.
@Shindokie: What logical reason could you provide that Square Enix is "holding back" on a Chrono Trigger sequel? It's obvious from the Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Star Ocean, and Mana series that Square Enix isn't afraid of making sequels, there has to be some sort of other factor like maybe the Chrono games didn't sell as well as people thought (although I'm a firm believer that they do) or someone (the gooch, possibly) has control over Chrono games that is no longer affiliated with Squeenix that make the sequels impossible at this point in time.
Square Enix is a company, and therefore I'd assume they'd take any chance possible to make money, so SOMETHING has to be cockblocking a sequel and everytime I see one demanded my heart sinks a bit cuz I know it's not gonna happen :(
@Lemming To The Sea: From what i heard is that the genius' behind the game separated and therefore cannot create a game for it. Plus the License for the game is up in there as well. I don't really mind if they don't make a sequel if its going to be bad. I enjoyed Chrono Cross, but not as much as the first. Either way I just realized that i really need to go out and find these games. Stupid Chrono Trigger auction.
Also your right money is involved and I think they would sell a lot of copies of that game. I mean i will buy three. I might be poor, but surely i will be happy.
A new Chrono game would be nice, but a new Evo game for DS would be amazing. Come on Enix fans, back me up!
I'm hoping that Spore will fill in some of the void.
@Shindokie: Haha I was thinking the same thing, except -Chrono Cross cuz I already own it. "Hmmm maybe I should finally pick up Chrono Trigger and Earthbound with my tax refund..."
@Lemming To The Sea: Thats what i'm going to do as well. I was talking to someone else about just getting them on the ds or psp over rom. I hate pirating but there are some games i jump flaming electrifying piranha hoping hoops for. Now i just need to get a psp.
Gonna suck on DS or PSP, whichever they made it for. Shoulda been a home console game and THEN ported to the DS.
Play the bloody game, then judge it.
@Monger King: you win comment of the week!
@Kenaue: I enjoy DS more then any home console atm so no thanks.
I hope they take their time, I'm stuck in a pile of DS games already lol
Damn it square enix, stop giving Togashi reasons not to work on Hunter x Hunter. You know DQ is like crack for him, yet you keep putting out.
@Lot krotan (wut?): Consider me your backup. I'm probably the only other person who played it though, so don't get your hopes up.
@Shindokie: hey man, i kinda liked the first one! after that, it was varying degrees of cool and just kinda ok...but yeah, at no point was it xenogears. granted.
Multiplayer? Wait, what?
Dragon Quest MMO confirmed!
@Lot krotan (wut?): Evo was awesome. I'd love a sequel to it. :D
But If we're talking Squeenix making sequels... How about some Bushido Blade? Possibly for the Wii, with Die By The Sword-esque-but-with-stances controls XD
@Irenicus-the one and only: Same here.
@TheIrishNinja: I'm glad you know that. I'm waiting for my copy. I want to buy the Xenogears artbook but i don't have 200+ laying around.
I wonder how it'll be mutliplayer when they supposedly switched DXIX from an action rpg to a menu turnbased rpg after the Japanese complained. I'll pick attack. You pick attack. The other guy picks special attack. Jelly takes 15 dmg. Hopefully it'll be a lot more fun than just portrayed. I've been looking forward to this game for a while.
Will DQ9 require DX10?
@kirstpo:
Figures they would complain. It breaks tradition. Personally, I like action better than menus. Don't understand why anyone would like menus more, but whatever. Can't stand Enix's stuff anyway.
@Draconis:
Well, you can play with four DSes. I thought everyone knew that!
then it comes in the us a year later, and europe a year after that. hop aboard the delay train!
@Rickster773: You have been of the delay train? I been riding it since 20years ago, I hear there will be a stop soon, the conductor said so!
Uh...ok. Hate to be the one...but whats so exciting about this game? NOT bashing it. Just havent played it...would like to get some detailed info. Would it be worth getting the Cobalt DS for???
@dowingba: ROFLMAO
@3/9/2008+7 days=1 helluva week!!: It's Dragon Quest. Got a large cult following in the US, and a massive one in Japan. Honestly if you haven't ever enjoyed a Dragon Quest game before now, you may not like this one.
As for the DS, this is great news and going to lead to a month of Media Center sales tracking showing 100k a week DS sales.
@Kenaue: Your not very informed, plus you miss the fact that the DS has a larger install base then any of the current systems. It can do nothing but make craploads of money on the DS for SE.
@Shindokie: I want a chrono sequal also, but I dont think squenix was remembering thaqt 4 million plus copies dragon quest 8 sold in japan alone.
Dragon Quest IX yes please.
This (and Puzzle Quest) is the reason I bought a DS. I'm a huge DQ fan. Now if only the remakes would be released outside of Japan.
@kirstpo: yeah its funny that they dont admit anywhere that this is the reason why the game got delayed, it was pretty obvious that the game had suck written all over it when they first showed it, im glad they're back to the roots now
Square Enix had better bring the DQ IV,V,VI remakes to America, or I'm going to have to learn Japanese.
Oh, yeah. I totally forgot about this game. I pretty much decided to ignore it now that the battle system isn't real-time anymore. Plus, there's not alot of suspense about it. You know what to expect from the game and you now it'll sell like crazy. There's nothing to look forward to.
I don't mind the menu-based combat. What I don't like is that every game in the series seems to have a part where you have to gain 15 levels before you can continue.
Mmm, can't wait for this game.
lololol funny. I just bought DQ8 TODAY.
Siliconera link is broken..
Dragon Quest IX will probably be my first Dragon Quest game. Why has it taken this long??
9 versions of mediocrity.
and that's being nice
