Subject: Old Arcade Machines Need Love Too
Ahoy gents. I trust the weekend treated you well? As I was walking around near my house today I passed by an old, dusty repair shop. It was closed but I could see some old arcade machines inside including a defunct Paperboy machine and an original Ninja Gaiden machine. I'm told that they repair arcade machines exclusively at this place although no one seemed to be sure if they actually sell them or just do the repairs. I'll check in with them on Tuesday when they open, not that I could ever afford a stand up machine, but curiosity compels me. I'm actually rather surprised at all the gaming related things I've been finding around my new place: the ugly Dreamcast, the 8-bit rainbow unicorn mural, the creepy Tails statue and now these old arcade machines. Who knew the Mission was so steeped in video game stuff?
Some things you might have missed this weekend:
This guy has an incredible personal arcade machine collection
I'm looking forward to checking out Eternity's Child on WiiWare
Love your Xbox? Win another one!
I'm heading out now for some dinner and maybe a movie. Who knows, I'm feeling a little aimless tonight. Hope you guys have a great week. Goodnight.

C'monnnnnnnn.......... You know you want one of the arcade machines...
...or at least take some really good pictures so we can see 'em, haha!
too expensive how? make some public appearances ;D
OMG you have created hell with he insult of the dreamcast. expect the wrath of Lovers below!
I wanna Ninja Gaiden machine!
And how much is your rent? :p The wife and I are looking for an area in SF to move to in a couple years so... Y'know.
But yeah, seems like you've hit the jackpot! Weird, but cool area to live in.
@Shindokie: *Holds his Dreamcast tightly and weeps over a copy of Shenmue.*
@Shindokie: to be fair, the dreamcast he found was ugly as sin, it looked like a power ranger pooped it out one day and left it at a pawn shop
@hawaiianactor: QUick Batman give me link. I just got home so i might have missed it.
@Shindokie: You'd go bat-shit insane... trust me.
Wait, you're in San Francisco? Maybe I need to look around more carefully when I catch a burrito sometime.
@el goose: I have gone further then that and i'm no longer here. So bring on the pain!!!!
WOOT Giant I got $200 bones off that game and ahhh old arcade machines do need love.
@Shindokie: brace yourself.. [kotaku.com]
I only paid $250 for the arcade cabinet (old 80s dedicated game later converted to a vertical JAMMA cab) I have in here, including the Strikers 1945 board that came with it. Granted, buying JAMMA stuff isn't cheap. If you know where to look price isn't a big issue (finding the space for one not so much, especially if you're living in a place like SF.)
I got my copy of Dig Dug for $20, If you know where to look, you can get okay deals on arcade machines... Go for it Flynn!
Okay. Giants won the Superbowl.
There. That news has been announced now. Now nobody mention it.
Now here's what really matters: A dog that looks just like my dog won the puppy bowl.
For anybody who watched the puppy bowl:
[i82.photobucket.com]
My dog. And the dog that won looked just like that.
Oh, and as a little gaming reference, guess what game came out the day I got my dog.
@Kirbytheslayer: Thinks AAA is a great term: Oh yeah. I forgot to mention the day not. I was just so excited about my dog.
Okay. Well, there are none of those things in my neighborhood. My city hates games. They've literally successfully petitioned to have the one game store in the city closed down, and there are no gamestops inside the city.
I've got to go to either of the two GS's on the border.
@Kirbytheslayer: Thinks AAA is a great term: The heck we're going to mention it... not only was it a nail-biter, it was probably the best, meanest show of defensive playing I've seen in ages.
And that Eli Manning pass was gold, pure gold!
So I thought madden bowl said patriots would win? and on Cnn they said that if the Giants won then the economy would get better.
Silly stuff there. Great game though. really thought Patriots would win at the end there but Giants brought it back in the last 2 mins.
Am I the only one with Sesame Street's "Who are the People in your Neighborhood" in his head?
@dunetiger: Well, you WERE... and then you mentioned it. Good job, I'm not gonna be able to get to sleep now!
@Five Element Ninja: My eyes they burn. I'm lucky enough to know how to type without looking.
@dunetiger: ...Not anymore. Damn you.
Mr. De Marco, I'm sure you'll find, if you haven't already, the Mission District is "steeped" in all sorts of things...
@Kirbytheslayer: Thinks AAA is a great term:
dude, you watched the puppy bowl? awesome! I've seen them all every year! the cutest thing since Melee Bowser!
Arcade games aren't that expensive if you get them at auction or on Ebay (got an Arkanoid cocktail for $115!), but they always cost too much at the repair shops, probably because they have to guarantee they work or pay the rent or something.
@dunetiger: -__- you ass... and that is all.
@zoesch: I assume you're reffering to that 60-yard or so pass, not the game-winning one, right? Because the actual touch-down was pretty boring.
But, the fancy hail mary-
It was pure luck on his part. He's a little kid who got lucky. The catcher is the one who did something impressive.
@dunetiger: I love that song. Try listening to it and "Octopus's Garden" together.
@Zinko: Technically, I Recorded it, and watched it at 1.5x speed.
go giants!!!
@Kirbytheslayer: Thinks AAA is a great term: Yep, the 58 yard pass one was gold... it wasn't so much luck as determination, I had never seen anyone pull back from such pressure, he had people tugging his shirt and was one second away from being sacked yet he pulled out and threw a great pass (Plus the catch was gold too). The TD one was from memory, he knew Burrell was going to be running from the line so he threw it into space.
I need to brag a bit. I just bought my first arcade machine. It's a Capcom machine from the early nineties. It's a CPS-2 machine and came with the cartridges and marquees for Alien vs. Predator, GigaWing, Dungeons and Dragons: Tower of Doom, X-Men: Children of the Atom, Marvel Super Heroes and Super Street Fighter 2: Turbo.
My friends and I have been reliving our childhood. We've even been placing our quarter on the machine, even though it's set to freeplay.
@zoesch: 32 yard pass.. I had the numbers wrong.
I know for a FACT there are no game related stores in my town. I have two parts of town to choose from: The Gentrified and the Hispanic district. The commercial barrier between the two is filled with convenience stores and antique shops. We used to have a comic, card, and game shop in the little economic Gaza strip, but that went out of business. I am living in a nerd wasteland. We have a library, but no book store. Movie/Game rental, but only local so the selection is awful.
As soon as I can I am moving out.
Mission is also steeped in burritos. Sweet sweet burritos.
(expensive) La Taqueria ftw.
@Who are the people in your neighborhood?:
...in your neighborhood...
...in your neigh-bor-hoo-ood...
*whistle*
I'm glad to have done my part. :D Cheers, everyone!
Ninja Gaiden was such an awesome Arcade game.
Just started building an arcade cabinet. Was gonna buy a cabinet but they are about 400-500 just for the shell and couldn't find any older ones to gut. At first I'm just gonna throw a Dreamcast with the 2 arcade sticks, 2 light guns mounted on the sides, a fishing rod controller, maybe a removable wheel being I have about 80 dc games and all these peripherals for it, alot of them being arcade style games. After this test, I'm gonna build a control panel w/ trackball (for some cabal action!) and throw MAME in there :)
I <3 Puppy Bowl, but I doubly <3 the Kitty Halftime.
