The auction for the sealed copy of Chrono Trigger I wrote about yesterday has closed and the coveted game went or a whopping $1,217. The winning bidder will be a bit poorer but will have one hell of a piece of game history in their hands. If you're itching to drop a load of money on a sealed SNES game and missed out on this one, you can still get a bid in on this copy of MegaMan X2. Opening bid is $1,000. I'm truly amazed... I guess it's true that things are ultimately worth whatever someone will pay for them.

I dont know if thats the best or worst money ever spent.
Jesus.
0_o Hot damn thats an expensive piece of history!
Hope it's not a fake. Most I ever paid was $135 for Panzer Dragoon Saga in "ok" condition, which turned out to be supreme mint. I played it (lovingly) and then immediately sold it just because I just couldn't keep it.
meh, novelties...
Come on Flynn, you're, not your, and those games are for SNES. YOU'RE getting paid for this.
I have a sealed baseball in a box signed by Babe Ruth that the guy who bought this might be interested in.
But, you say the baseball inside might not be signed, and he'll never know?
Well, it's the same deal!
Mwuhahaha!!!!
If anyone needs more proof that the SNES is the best console ever, those price tags should be more then enought proof. My SNES is priceless, no way I would ever be able to sell it. I really do hope we start seeing more SNES AAA titles on the wii VC...
I'm afraid to ask how much a sealed Japanese copy of Chrono Trigger would go for...
Perverse
@HAGE: Run-on sentence.
There's a series of 3 signed books I'm looking at that should cost about the same price as that one game. Insane!
@Kirbytheslayer: Thinks AAA is a great term: Really? The candy bar? Sold!
Let's see if the buyer doesn't flake out and the seller is forced to relist...
@Shiryu: actually it proves that snes fans are idiots
Most I ever spent on a game was 200 bucks.
Some Saturn games are to die for.
@loyal2none: Radiant Silvergun? :D
i've seen worse
@mossberg: If you're rich, you don't care about money
If you don't care about money and you really want a sealed copy of one of the most amazing games ever made for your collection, you turn to eBay
Just because you're poor doesn't mean he's an idiot lmao
I managed to snag a sealed copy of Zelda Link's Awakening DX on eBay the other day for only $100. I had seen another copy in worse shape go for $400 the previous week. I give thanks to God.
Well now, that's a lot of money. One could've bought 5 SNESs with that.
Or, one could buy two PS3s with that.
Or, one could buy every console plus a nice comfy chair with that.
@Mohrdikai: Not much really, japanese version of the games don't go for as much as the american version for some reason. Just search and you'll see, the NTSC/U version of Valkyrie Profile for the PSone goes for over 100 dollars, while the Japanese version can go for just 20 dollars.
I feel like bidding 1.5k just for shits and giggles.
But watch no one would out bid me =(
1.2k for a shitty game he'll never even open. Square fans amaze me.
That's crazy. I'm sure you could find a mint copy for less.
Well,
some people have money to burn!!!
I think I might get my shrink wrap machine out and RE-WRAP some of my NES games!
A RE-sealed copy of Ikaruga for the dreamcast might fetch a bit, or even a RE-sealed copy of secret of mana for the SNES.
I'm crying because I soo want this game, and now it's virtually impossible...
Recession? Are you mad?! People are spending $1,000+ on a videogame!
@Green-clad Gamer Dude: You really need to learn to find better deals O_o I could get that game for 40 new. Is not that rare or that sought out in all honesty.
Even then, I could find it complete (Manual, box and game) for just around 20 to 30. I am glad you feel good about your purchase but that sounds like way to much to pay for it really O_O
Why aren't people perfectly fine with paying a 10th of the price for the game in mint condition with all the parts?
So what if it is sealed? Someone's gonna rip that sucka open.

@Kirbytheslayer: Thinks AAA is a great term: I don't think that term means what you think it means.
@jinpei05: Actually, I think it would just go to the last person who bid before him.
And yeah, I have to agree with DeLoRtEd1 here. The guy who bought it is most likely well off to be buying a video game for $1.5k. Or a really big nerd. But most likely he has the excess money. So hey, why not?
@angryrider: Somehow I doubt that after dropping 1.2k on it.
For some reason I am thinking of the episode of the Powerpuff Girls where the collector has every single item of them factory seal and his weakness is 'opening them'...I have nieces ok! That is why I have seen it <.<
I'll take Final Fantasy Chronicles for $40 and be just as happy.
@DeLoRtEd1: rich or poor has nothing to do with it.
@daknight: Those Cartoon Network Cartoon Cartoons are some of the best! Powerpuff, Johnny Bravo, Dexter's Lab...
I die a little more every day that CN plays more crappy new Scooby Doo movies and ignores their great library of 'toons.
A testament to the immortal genius of this title. Also, a study of the absurdities inherent in consumerism. And maybe, possibly, the most expensive visit to Melchior ever paid.
@altgod: And a hammer for shitty comments. Trolls never cease to amaze me.
I want it :(
yeah that's a lot of money. But people routinely pay that mush and more for used arcade boards. Guy better hope he gets some serious appreciation on that thing.
I've always regarded Chrono Trigger to be one of those expensive used games. Even back in the N64 days a used copy of Chrono Trigger would run you 40-60 dollars in the states. Now I see stuff like this and my mind is just boggled. Especially since I can buy the Japanese version of the game (opened, however) at my local Geo for about 250 yen. They have a stack almost as tall as I am.
I guess this is why I never was any good at collecting basebal cards either. :/
@daknight: Hmm, I dunno. Lately it's been going up. I've been tracking just about every new copy of the game for over a year on eBay with alerts. I think I was pretty lucky to snag it for only $100 before someone else.
@mossberg: If you're not poor, then why is the man an idiot?
Oh right, because you're either jealous or you hate Chrono-Trigger.
Either way, gtfo.
it's still a huge amount of money for a console game though. I just don't get collectors sometimes, but if I had the cash I'd still have bid on it.
Next on Kotaku: Youtube footage of the winning bidder unsealing the game and playing it. :D
man, I can think of more ways to spend 1200 bucks than on the original chrono trigger game. Foolish people with money will always depart with it.
Sometimes I do stupid stuff like this.
Cept its hard to find stuff in mint condition sealed here, without an insane premium on it.
Anyways thanks to that I managed to secure all the first print copies of Disgaea 1 + 2.
@2NinjasTapedTogether: *Nods* I miss Dexter's Lab. Love that show, I still have a recording of what to me was the rarest episode they made cause it was barely replay or at least I never catch it when they did. Which is the one mocking James Bond as Dexter has to infiltrated the place where the process film roll to keep his laboratory a secret...LOVE that episode.
Sorry if went a bit out of the way of the topic in hand there ^^;; Just had to show my appreciation to that episode xP
I just hope this wasn't a 'smoke and mirror' thing and the seller does get his money, hate when people do that (happen to me once :( )
I mean depart from it. damn typos
@Legion329: Youtube rating: 2 stars.
I could see why this game went for over 1k...this is probably one of the few factory sealed copies of it left in existance. Shiny.
