This Portal/M.C. Escher mashup is the work of an anonymous 4Chan poster. So your thanks and praise will have to be directed towards the heavens. But man oh man is that one glorious piece of fan art. The concise version is above, but if you're after a new desktop, a full-size version's after the jump.
Thanks Josh!

So... how would the gravity work here? When you get up too high from a surface, would you flip to another gravity area, a la Mario Galaxy?
"an anonymous 4Chan poster."
Is there any other kind?
Also, that's amazing.
Sweet! This looks way way awesome :D
still makes me motion sick...
I wish this could be a real level...
*drool* Make a real, playable version.
maybe in the next portal your gun can control the direction of gravity
Man, that Anonymous. What a genius that person is.
Yea, thats pretty good stuff.
CURSE YOU 360 AND YOU NON DOWNLOADABLE CONTENT!
i want Anonymous to have my babies. he/she/it whoever.
This might Echser in a new era for fan art.
That's my favourite Escher piece actually. But it's missing the stealthy 'thief' figure, near where the companion cube is. But a great effort, well done!
Very Awesome, see /b/ has done at least one thing beneficial to society.
No map version, no care.
Am i the only one that want's to solve this level?
@cchrist: No. Hence my previous comment.
Kind of looks like that game Sony showed at E3. I think it was called Echo-Chrome or something. Anyhow that looks pretty friggen cool!
Gawd, it's like Portal crossed with Super Mario Galaxy.
@Paustinj: They're also pissing off Scientologists.
Is nice that people is re-telling Escher images, because Escher images are very "H.P.Lovecraft", and tChultu is the new Pirates.
This has to be the most...beautiful and "normal" thing to come from 4Chan.
4Chan for Great Justice!
I'm getting a headache just looking at this
definitely a 4channer's work.
interestingly enough there was a post on this 4chan thread that said, (and this may be a slight misquote but the idea is the same so bear with me) "can't wait to see this in six months on slowtaku.".
glad to see you guys are more on the ball then that anon thought. well done kotaku.
p.s. and yes, it is an amazing render
I guess Escher was thinking with portals long before any of us.
I am awestruck.
I want a full size picture to hang on my wall.
@Loveable-villain: Isn't this EVERYONE'S favorite Escher piece? Really, his other stuff is good, but I've always found that this one was the pinnacle of awesomeness.
In the bottom left of the image there is (C) Linkitch... googl`n linkitch, I get [linkitch.deviantart.com] Warhammer/Half-Life, I'd say there is a good chance that's them.
@Sabre_Justice:
I was thinking more a cross between PORTAL and PREY..
ps, tag filter test
MOAR NAO
My head imploded and exploded simultaneously. Nice!
That. Was. Awesome.
Apparently it was made by someone named "Linkitch," as evidenced by the note in the bottom left. Amazing work, just wish it was widescreen so I could use it on my laptop as a wallpaper.
I think the shading spoils some of the effect... When looking at it straight-on, as in the first picture, I can easily figure out what's a texture and what's an actual shape. When turned on its side, however, like the one after the jump, it's a bit more brain-bendy. Good work either way.
@Paustinj:
It probably came from /v/
Saved though. Very nice work.
@elevenoverzero:
/hr/ actually
remember when going through walls meant "no-clipping"?
The Enrichment Center would like to take this time to remind you that although the walls are upside down, they are still NOT able to speak.
[<3]
@Spiffyness:
I was looking through a book of his recently and there's some other stuff that rivals it, in my view. The 'top of the castle' painting is brilliant, looks like everyone is going 'up' the stairs all the time, when, of course, that's not possible.
I love this guy. I think of him as the gamer's (or mathematician's) artist.
@teh_joe:
Pff. I stopped playing Daggerfall because of a clipping fuck up. (Not that it didn't have a hundred other bugs too, by all accounts). I remember feeling like a God when I used 'noclip' in Doom.
It's incredible that anonymous can make this escher sketch AND take on the scientology cult. Anonymous is clearly a mutli-tasker. :-p
Imagining the physics of an escher game hurt my head. A lot.
There was an old UT level... DM_escher, I think. If we can find that and apply some nice portal textures, we might be halfway there.
Wow... awesome.
And it would actually work in Prey too...
in b4 EPIC WIN, cake is a lie, ect.
@ShaggE: tripfogs.
Amazing work... would be even more amazing if there were someway to mess with gravity to make this a functional map.
Also, obligatory:
This was a triumph, I'm making a note here: HUGE SUCCESS...
This makes prinny sad. D:
My eyes hurt enough as is without seeing madness like this!
Would make a fucking sweet poster though!
I think Valve just got an idea of what to do for Portal 2.
Awesome.
"I'm going up the stairs and going down the stairs, going up the stairs and going up the stairs, and going up the sideway stairs..."
Looks cool, but I don't think it works as will as Escher's original. The shadows give a definite sense of what side should be up.
@bob-e: That depends on where the light source is coming from. You can install light sources in floors; it isn't practical, but still.
PC Wallpaper version plz?
I tried to just use the poster itself but it stretched out all funny ._.
my brain, it hurts
Is there a good version for my small 1280x1024 screen?
good job!
54 comments and no one has said "anon delivers" yet?
I thought there'd be more 4chan/Kotaku crossover than this.
Cool, but needs a hidden cake.
