Epic's games come in two flavors: First person and third person. Mix it up, guys! Can't you make other types of games? You know, games that aren't shooters? Epic honcho Mark Rein says:
We love making shooters, and I'm certain there are still countless ways we can improve in that genre. We look at Gears of War and we see the pimples, we look at UT3 and think 'we should also do this, we should also try that, if only we had more time and more people, we could have done...' so I think we're continually looking at our own games and thinking there are lots of unfinished puzzles left to solve before we move on to something else... There's still a lot of low hanging fruit in this genre — we need to pick some more of that.
And that fruit, dear reader, pays the bills and buys the brown suits.

Someone tell him to fix UT3. :x
Or more like ask him why he decided to change the formula a bit. D:
Maybe because Halo 3 received so much flame for "not changing anything" :)
If they want to perfect their view of FPS, then let them!
@Witzbold: Indeed... why did they change the game when UT2k4 proved to be the right direction on many things but yet broken on UT3? You don't fix what ain't broken.
Well I like UT3... I don't like the end of the campaign, but I like the game.
@Para:
Could someone please explain, what exactly needs to be fixed?
Apparently the graphics every year, very little else.
One second people complain about companies doing the same thing all over again and the next they complain about them changing. Please stop confusing the poor developers.
@Garo: The campign wasn't a campaign at all. It was a series of, what, 40 or so bot matches against the computer. No mission structure, no scripted sequences, nothing.
Gameplay wise, the game is too fast. Every player needs to have absolutely lightning quick reflexes to be any good at the game, and even then, most kills are attributed to luck. I also hate to bring this up, but the game is pretty much brown and gray. That's not the engine, those are the levels Epic designed. Every level has a specific color to it, except for the Asian-architecture maps, and that color essentially masks the absolutely gorgeous visuals with a drab overcoat of brown, gray, or blue. Gears of War suffered from this exact same problem. You'd think Epic would have learned by now.
The weapons are relatively imbalanced as well. The sniper rifle is practically useless what with the speed most players are moving at. The pistol generally gets more kills than the rocket launcher.
There are other problems with the vehicles as well, etc etc etc.
There's also the tiny problem that nobody is actually playing the PC version. UT2K4 had generally at any one time a couple hundred games. I think UT3, at this moment, as about 10 or so, the majority of which are populated almost entirely with bots.
I have the game installed, but I don't actually play it. After the demo was released I knew it wouldn't be a game I'd enjoy. I bought it for the Unreal 3 Engine and development package. Hopefully some loyal Unreal fans will mod the game to make it more like UT2K4, although I doubt a user-made mod will convince many people to come back to the game. Team Fortress 2, CoD4 and Halo 3 unfortunately have a tight grip on the balls of the multiplayer community.
Pimples on GoW? O.o; More like warts if you ask me. I mean it's a good game but there is SOOOOOO much that needs improving in that game. The single player is really average at best.
Like the computer having some good A.I. would be nice. It doesn't make a fire fight very exciting when if you manage to sneak around the side the enemy will often stand completly still trying to hide from your original position while you pound him with bullets.
Maybe add a good story, good characters, team mates that don't actively hinder your progress (yes Dom I was shooting there, thanks for constantly walking in the way). Yea once they fix that then they can start looking at other genres >.>
UT3 is just the right speed. The weapons are balanced and it's all good.
If you start a thread on the Epic forums about it, it'll get deleted immediately. So I'll say it here:
Epic! You need anticheat! Ok? ANTI-CHEAT. There is none and it shows.
You also need advertising so we have some actual people in the servers. I logged on at lunch today and not a single person in Australia was playing.
You also need to do something about the crazy team imbalances. And while you're at it, scrap the damn ranking so we don't have people logging in to a game and going AFK so they can farm rank FFS.
Just make sure you don't pick that "Danglefruit" ;)
Epic never finishes teh back end of their games, they're buggy as hell.
Finish games before releasing them? might be nice.
@Atheist Jew:
The speed is the same as it was in UT2k4.
The Sniper Rifle is a ranged weapon and nearly useless for DM and TDM.
In WF or VCTF on the other hand it makes sense.
All Weapons have the same handling and are the same as they were in UT2k4, the only exeption are the Redeemer and the Sniper Rifle (that exchanged the Lighting Gun :(
@Zim:
Try a harder mode...
Time for a next gen Jazz Jackrabbit.
What ever happened to the second-person shooters in development limbo?
They cant dare to stop making shooters and try a new game heh.who would take risk anyway!?..
I personally would like to see them make games where the characters aren't designed like steroid-fuelled over-muscled giants. Some "normally proportioned" characters would make a nice change. I personally can't relate to big fat fuckers in giant suits of impractical armour, as I am slim, lithe and graceful. And watching musclemen legging it about does nothing for me. Perhaps it is just their vision of the future. What a terrifying thought.
@elevenoverzero: @Garo:
From what I can tell the majority of UT fans disagree with you both. Of course, from this particular sampling, I'm in the minority. :(
The way I see it, if more old-school UT fans were happy with UT3's gameplay, they'd be playing it. Instead, UT3's active player population is dismally low, which means something is definitely wrong.
What about letting them do what they do best. When they do a crappy RPG I'll have to hear your whining too mind you. I don't need no Square Ennix fps either.
Sometimes, the things that people ask for, makes me wonder if we ever did invent that wheel.
@Atheist Jew: Sorry if I sound anal but too fast? you ever played any of the older UT games? UT is all about speed.
I think its kind of like telling BMW to branch out and make Blenders or Hair Curlers. Let them do what they are best at, and let other companies fill the other holes.
@Witzbold: Why take out assault mode? They took it out of UT2k3, realized their mistake and put it back in UT2k4.
@Cad06: mental jinx, you owe me a coke.
You won't see me complaining- Gears of War was a total class act and had some of the best Co-op I've ever played.
They want to send some more of that over our way? Fine by me.
@Atheist Jew:
Seven years have already past and most of us UT veterans don't have very much time to play anymore or money to upgrade the PC :(
Kids and wife first... then the PC.
Also what most of my fellow UT friends hate is the GameSpy technology the game uses. My biggest complains are the GUI and some of the vehicle controls. Epic has already stated that they will change the GUI with a patch.
I believe that UT3 wasn't marketed the proper way and CoD4 and the Orange Box were simply too strong. The only thing that could turn the tide would be a very good mod... we'll see.
Whatever happened to Jazz Jackrabbit?
@Atheist Jew: I thought the coloring scheme in Gears of War was fitting for the feel they were trying to present, especially considering the grim fate of the world they were living in at that point. :X
those who think Gears Of War was to gray and brown, go to options and set color scheme to 'vibrant'. Suddenly the sky is blue and the grass is green (literally), especially on the Garden and Gridlock maps
@y2julio: I'm aware of that, but there is a noticeable difference (to me) between the speed of gameplay in UT2K4 and UT3. It's too fast. Some people say it hasn't been sped up at all, but most think it has. You know how it feels? I have the perfect metaphor for this. Remember the adrenalin combo move in UT2k4 Up, Up, Up, Up for speed? UT3 feels like that, but the speed combo is active all the time.
@Norellicus: I wasn't trying to say that either UT3 or Gears don't look great. Because, obviously, they do. The drab color scheme of Gears fits more with the semi-post-apocalyptic setting of the game, but the problem is that the drab colors extended to every location across the game. It's like they had a permanent brown overwash filter across the entirety of the game. Certain areas, like Fenix's father's estate and the Imulsion caves stood out from the rest, but both still have the brown filtering. The environents, while gorgeous, would have been even moreso had Epic brought out the inherent color of the various locales. UT3 suffers as well.
@artistpavel: Does this option also exist in the PC version? I'll have to give that a shot.
nice smile and the guy on the right has a secret
@Zim: Wow, I thought I was the only one who thought Gears deserved the same level of criticism that Halo 3 gets by the bucketful.
Oh, but it had the chainsaw bayonet, so I guess it was hugely innovative.
"we look at UT3"
and then ignored all the fan feedback based on the demo, and said, 'what the hell, let's just release it!'.
Ps. Gears needs to be scrutinized just as much as Halo in the single player department.
The game is a just a turn style in terms of level design. Kick down a door, locust hole appears, shoot some guys, press Y to look at something boring, pick a path, repeat.
Co-op saved it a little, but it's still boring in the end.
Epic shouldn't quit shooters, because they're mediocre at best, and any other genre would be a disaster.
Did somebody say "One Must Fall" sequel? No? Well I'm saying it. I know there was a company that made an OMF follow up a few years ago, but dammit, I want Epic to make a true sequel.
yes UT3 should of had a real story line and they need to make the patch for the ps3 to fix the connectivity to the servers other than that they game is awesome.
They suck at shooters and have gotten arguably worse at it over the years. Just image how much they'd suck at a genre they have no experience with.
That and they hired a bunch of no talents out of their Unreal community for making decent FPS maps. They were decent maps but making a shooter map for online play doesn't mean you know anything about making a whole game let alone any other game.
...Professor Parberry?
This is obviously cause they suck at making anything else, so cheers for more shooters! Tired of damn shooters, bring on the BRAWL!
Screw UT. Bring back Jill of the Jungle!
How about a second-person shooter? Like, it's seen through the eyes of your enemy, or a hostage you have to keep protected. Yeah.... that would work... :P
