Today's Playstation Portable firmware update came with a little touch of Skype (except if you live in China, go figure). Once patched, the Skype option shows up under Network. I was able to pretty quickly register for a new account using the PSP and get it working in less then five minutes.
It's a pretty cool build of the software and while I'm not sure how often I'd use it around the house, I definitely plan on bringing it with me when I travel for some free calls. Also plan on abusing the hell out of it to harass Ash since it only cost me $10 to buy seven hours worth of worldwide Skype to phone service. (Skype to Skype is free) That's right seven hours of me rambling to Ash... can't wait!

but no fat psp. :-(
Seems like a great idea... And I don't say pretty things about the PSP very often.
PSP ftw
I plan to sell my hacked PSP Phat and upgrade. I can't wait to try this out.
wow that was pretty cool.
I need a remote control for my PSP-2000 but they're STILL not out in the UK.
btw. when you installed skype for the first time on the psp, you get a 1 free skype call. Of course no one said anything about it so I wasted it listening to my cellphone's voice mail.
i see his number!
@Mr. Dark E: lol. i called my home phone, because I didn't realize either. All that accomplished was annoying my wife.:)
Brian, are you talking to fictional video game characters over Skype?
Uhh... but who's Ash, seriously?
they could put this on the ps3 as well if they wanted to
I think you can pull up the dialpad during a call to enter extension numbers and stuff.
@ArchAngel080: boooooring ;)
@miyamotoschin: Brian Ashcraft, our man in japan
I dont know why but crecente reminds of Kevin Smith. Anyone else??
Hmm, I want somekind of homebrew-program so I can use voice-calls with my DS aswell ;/.
too cool.
That is a bitchin app for the PSP. It's kind of getting my attention a lot more recently (due to the remote play with the PS3).
Has anyone used the remote play yet? Does it work as promised?
HAH! I am SOOOO calling Fahey!!!
7 HOURS?
Worldwide? Like, call friends in Japan or other countries and talk to them for 7 hours? Thats kickass! Thats fantastic! I can call my friends if thats really the case.
@ffmusicdj: Yeah, that's what skype says.
$10 for 7 hours?!?! I WANT IT.
@rKarhu:
Uhm...
Link: [svsip.free.fr]
Ill be looking foward to this! Seriously $10 for 7 hours is a steal!
i dunno about you guys, wireless environments aren't all that common where i am... so essentially you're still tethered to wherever there's wireless! what about you guys? wireless common?
Quick questions.
Does it receive webcam footage from PC Skype users?
Can you set the screen to "auto-shutdown" for those long conversations?
Feel free to ignore me if these have been answered already.
Dammit. I want to update my PSP but I left the AC Adapter at home. Now I have to wait til 5:30.
Pretty cool, but I don't have a mic to use with my PSP.
I need a headset, is there one that would serve double duty (earbuds and a mic), without upping the nerd factor when it comes to form factor? Just curious.
I tried this late last night and I was surprised how slick the service is on my PSP. Would of loved to call if I had a mic! Can I use the mic from Sony that's already been released?
@Vidril: @Witzbold: @ffmusicdj: Christ it's like you guys have never heard of Skype before. Those are regular prices, not some PSP exclusive rate. Check it out, it's pretty awesome: www.skype.com
Can it do conference calls? I use Skype on the computer a lot for this as an alternative to Ventrilo or Teamspeak, and having it on the PSP might be handy in some situations.
@Recoil: I havent used skype in ages. Not to mention didnt even bother checking the pay features.
We fucking know what skype dont be a tit.
So does your psp only 'ring' if you are online with it?
I'm looking forward to messing around with this when I get home tonight!
wow id love this feature on my ps3... id so pay that 10 bucks ^_^
@ROMBOX
you have some dang good questions. i too would appreciate answers to them, as well as info for how the mod community is coming along with getting skype on the older versions of the psp.
@AkiBakiSan: Nope. I'm pretty sure it said (248)262-6861. Dial it, you will be glad that you have this number!
@errington07: Seriously! Why can this not be implemented across the product range? This pisses me off. It's just like when you couldn't use remote play on the 20GB PS3 and then randomly Sony was like "Oh, btw, yeah we can let you do that now."
"Bash... I've never had the courage to say this before... but this new Skype PSP has granted me the strength to say... that I love you!"
"Crecente, it's 4 in the morning! What the fuck? What's with all the late-night calls these days?"
"Oh this is fun" hahahaha aahhh. Or "Oops i droped it"
But Skype looks really cool, to bad i have a PSP 1000. If a god of war bundle comes out i might upgrade, who knows. Also i breifly make out fahey's phone number.
@mydogisdexter:
Remote Play is quite sexy with the PSP/PS3 combo - been playing Pixel Junk Monsters a little this week via remote play, also was using it to replay a little FF7 over the Christmas break while I was out of town.
The Skype addition is great, looking forward to annoying some overseas friends more frequently now ~
Somebody knows if this service is available in Canada and México?
@romBox:
I dont think it supports video, at least I see no option for it. And I just checked the options menu and see no screen shutdown option.
$10 for 7 hours is beyond a steal... I used to pay $10 for an hour of card service. And that was just me calling 500 miles north-east of myself.
Agreed, it's pretty impressive so far. I'm pretty happy that they did this since I already have a paid Skype account.
No, it doesn't seem to support video.
@mydogisdexter: Remote play is great. I use it to watch movies and listen to music from my bedroom and office (PS3 is in the living room). I don't play many games over remote play but I tried out syphon filter PS1 and it seemed to work okay.
One of the coolest features IMO is that you can turn on the ps eye camera through the chat interface so I have it set up by my daughter's playpen and I can watch her play from work.
@mydogisdexter: It is a nice app, but I wish Sony would let us make our own apps to use on the PSP. I like the fact that you use Skype, but I think there are more thought about features or improvements that I'd rather have than just Skype.
Better themes for one, like CFW, just look some of these: [www.consolespot.net]
STOP CALLING ME!
Is it 7 hours per $10 or is it just an introductory "7 hr for $10"?
Alright. Ive got a PSP 2000 and want WiFi in my house so I can use this Skype feature among others. Does anyone know how to set up a Linksys wireless router (model: wrt54g version 6)? I have had this router for the longest time but haven't been able to get it working. Point me in the right direction or something, anything please. If you need to know anything else about what kind of computer I have or something I can provide that.
@Fahey: Dude that sucks. That video should be taken down unless you want more people calling you.
thats cool i guess. I hope that this will still work on custom firmware 3.90. I have official firmware 3.80. Hey, does anyone know if when 3.90 custom comes out if i just have to install that after renaming the 3.90 official download or if i have to do something to my psp
@Fahey:
LOL
Yeah, unfortunately for Fahey we can see his number.
LOL I'm guessing the Fahey anti-fanboys (haters) are going to have a field day.
@Fahey: Time to get a new number!
Someone please answer this for me, i'm begging you.
Could I be able to make a call to a normal phone in Nicaragua?
That is, if I buy credit for skype to phone calls...
@Brian Crecente: Your best bet for "screen shutdown" is just holding the video icon on the bottom of the PSP. Much like holding the music note will mute your audio, holding the video will turn off the screen, but keep the PSP running. The screen turns back on when you touch any button.
Has anyone here tried Skype Pro with their PSP-2000?
@scotty: I think so. I think you can call any landline in the world.
