So some UK retailers are charging as much as ten extra quid for the PS3 version of Devil May Cry 4. Why's it more expensive than the Xbox 360 version? Both versions look pretty much the same. What gives?! Says a Capcom spokesperson:
We don't set the prices of our games, that's at the discretion of the retailer. In this specific instance, the process has resulted in a price difference, but the process itself is not something we completely control.
That sucks, but there it is.
More Expensive for PS3 [VideoGamer.com via Next-Gen]

Comments
Well there has been less ps3's sold so less people will buy a copy of the ps3 version so thats why its more expensive. It's not that hard it's just what shops do.
I've been wondering why this is myself. I was gonna get the ps3 version but seeing as the games look like they're the same on both consoles I'll probably end up getting it on the 360.
So just go to one of the retailers that have it at the lower price or preorder online...what's the big deal? Also, can you label this at the UK b/c the title makes it seem like it applies to everyone around the globe instead of one of many markets.
@cchrist: Sorry, but that's a bullshit reason. I've never heard of a store charging more for a version just because it was on a system with a lesser install base.
This doesn't make any sense. It's like the retailer wants the 360 version to sell better. I mean, even if I only HAD a PS3 and was thinking of buying this game, there's no way in hell I'd buy it for 50 pounds. Shit, I won't even buy it for 60 USD, but the 360 version costs 40 GBP, or 80 GP. The PS3 version equivalent to 100 GBP? What a fucking rip-off. Screw that retailer. There's no reason for a price gouging like that. You'll see some pretty shitty DMC 4 for PS3 sales in the UK, that's for sure. You'd be a fool to buy it at that price, no matter how big a fan you are, and even if you only have a PS3.
Seriously, why? Why is that happening over there?
@baked ham: I mean 80 USD... 40 GBP is 80 USD.
@DBX00: Exactly. Ever been to FYE here in the US? Every game they have is 5 dollars more than the MSRP so I never shop there.
Goddammit I suck! And the PS3 version equal to 100 USD, not 100 GBP. It IS 50 GBP. Sorry for all my stupidity.
So let me get this straight, a console that's in need of it's "big seller" just made one of it's most anticipated games MORE worth it on the other console?
That sucks. Badly. Not much more to say there, maybe they can get retailers to drop the price by the launch date, otherwise this one is just a bummer.
Not posting to be flame bait here...
The PS3 just doesn't sell as much as the 360. Most the retail space I see in shops like Best Buy or Future Shop (Canadian here!) is soaked up by 360 and Wii, with the PS3 sitting on some old rack in the back of the gaming section.
Takes up valuable floor real estate, they charge more. Simple. I remember my beloved Gamecube of yester-gen was in the same boat.
GAME and the like know they can get away with it.
This won't last that much longer though, the PS3 is gaining ground and should be equal to the 360 by next year.
I recently ordered the 360 limited edition of DMC4 from play.com for 46€ (EUR) when the same version for PS3 costs 60€ (EUR). It is a simple matter of supply and demand, the 360 has a much larger installed base and there are more products for its users to choose from. Therefore, there is more competition between products and a lower price is a means of attracting consumers' attention to a specific product. On the PS3 this is not an issue yet as there aren't as many quality games and people would be willing to pay more in order to play something good.
I've just purchased some Devil may cry from my supplier for my store, and I can tell you that they are charging more for the PS3 DMC than the 360 DMC. So don't blame the stores it's the suppliers
@Cloudizme: I agree. And it doesn't even make sense. Why does it cost so much more for the PS3 version? 25 % more! It's insanity. It costs the equivalent of 100 US Dollars. If Capcom is charging retailers the same amount to retailers for each version, then why are the retailers all making such a huge profit margin by charging so much for the PS3 version (which will do nothing but ensure that nobody buys it, which is bad for everyone). This is just about the biggest piece of bullshit news I've heard all year.
@Cloudizme: Can't blame sony for any of this, as like capcom they can't tell a retailer what to charge. That would be price fixing, and thats illegal in most places.
I'd boycot the retailers doign this though.
ps3 has become the premium product in in the eyes of UK stores. I dont mean "better", i just mean they see ps3 as newer, more expensive and therefore the public will buy at a higher price. Xbox 360 is seen as the norm, and ps3 as the "high-end" games console (please note the speech marks).
For reason (honesty? common sense?) Burnout paradise tends to be the same reasonable price of 40 quid in high street shops here. Hope this continues.
In short - its new, its shiny black, it says sony, its 10 quid more.
@DON KING: Hmmm... I'm really put off by all this.
Ya know, in the United States, when the Gamecube and Xbox had insignificant install bases compared to the juggernaut that was & is the PS2, there was NEVER, not ONE TIME a lower price for the PS2 version, or for the Xbox or Game Cube version, for that matter. Always the same price for all 3 versions.
I still remember with anguish the time I saw the 360 version of Peter Jackson's Official Reinterpritation of the Epic Motion Picture Videogame King Kong or whatever it was called, sitting on a shelf for €80. That's $120. The PS2 version was €50, which of course was still way too much for such an awful title, but the fact that some people actually spent that kind of money makes me sick.
High street retailers always jack up the price. I don't mind waiting an extra day or two for delivery from an online retailer when I'm saving 20%+ on the price.
I don't see how 40 quid is reasonable to anybody. It's like every region of the world gets gouged on prices besides the US and Japan. They get reasonable prices compared to Canada, Australia, Europe, UK, and everywhere else where you end up paying a lot more for the same goddamn product. 40 quid exchanges to 80 dollars, which is 33 % more than what it costs to buy the game in the US. If the US and Japan sell more consoles & games than any other countries, maybe it's because they have far more reasonable prices. I don't get the non-US/JP games industry. You people get fucked all the time, and I don't know why.
@cchrist: Last I heard multiplatform titles like COD4 and Burnout Paradise PS3 edition are selling just fine in the UK, almost on par with 360.
so wait.. Capcom has released two different explanations in 3 days..
haha
It's called an import. I'm sure UK PS3 owners will be doing that a lot with this game if they want it.
@baked ham: It all just blows mate. I think that people higher above have decided that becausethe consumer is prepared to pay more for the console that they will pay more for the game. there is also the increased production costsof Blu-Ray, but that's what you get when one console uses over 10 year old technology,and the other uses 1 year old technology. It's just cheaper to produce.
o well people who have a ps3 have prety much already have shown that they don't care about price of the merchindice they buy .....
@baked ham: 40 quid being reasonable compared to the normal level of ripping off. I understand that in the UK, things may cost a bit more because of man many different reasons, but this excuse frequently hides plain profiteering. Itunes charging more in the UK was the best example of this truth coming unstuck when they used the excuse on ephemeral goods. You might be able to make a case about import tax, shipping costs etc for a material good (and then inflate the price above and beyond it when no-one is looking), but for downloads? For thin-plastic-dvd-discs? For... wii points?
The fact that i think 40 quid for a game is reasonable (i.e. not good, but not terrible) shows how worringly overcharged we are in so many areas.
@baked ham: It could be like pandasonic says, it might just be an asshat retailer deciding that 'This game will sell X amount regardless, let's tack a few bucks onto the price'. I always thought of FYEs as the stores 'From the guys who brought you overpriced music from Sam Goody and other forgettable mall-fixture failures'. Thankfully we have none in the nearby area.
@DON KING: Cost of authoring in blu-ray isn't huge you know. probabaly looking at $0.15 to make a DVD versus $0.30 to make a blu-ray or something like that.
This is just price gouging, as both games probabaly wholesale for the same cost.
I would be buying games cheaply off of the net... if the "region-free" ps3 games didnt connect to US servers for online, and wii games from the US didnt have lovely, sweet region encoding.
@mrantimatter: Please read above! ^^^^^
the real question is.. why is the SE version $20 more instead of $10
oh well i'm still paying the $20 more, for the cool case and not the crappy bonus disc
@DON KING: You in the UK? Because in this country, the only time I ever saw a 360 version being cheaper than the PS3 version was about a month after Call of Duty 4 came out, Circuit City had a sale only on the 360 version, for 1 week, it was 40 USD, instead of 60. Then it went back up. It's pretty much universal that they all cost the same here. With the exception of one or two titles that came out far apart, like R6 Vegas is, I believe 40 bucks new, here, for 360, and still 60 for PS3, but PS3 version is 7 months newer, so... I dunno. It just seems wrong to me, personally.
@GMC: Do they actually do that? I have a pal resistance and I played it online for the first time the other day and I was online with a whole lot of americans.
@GMC: Agreed. I feel for you guys. I think games are overpriced in America. I was against the 60 dollar regular charge when I first saw, cuz I was so used to 50 (and often less). But I'm *getting* used to the 60. I can't imagine paying more. Whew.
Was I the only one who played the demo and thought it was crap? I couldn't justify 60 bucks to myself let alone a hundred. Are we really that hard up for a game?
It's just the video game industry bending us Europeans over as usual.
We get screwed on some PSN content, too?
Motorstorm content is $3 vs. €5 (about $7.35). Where is the big bad retailer there?
@wizardofoz85: I've looked into it and i've read a few reports that games connect to their home servers, including recently Burnout and COD4. I hope its not true. If you've been playing against home players with an international disc, then that would be good news for me.
@baked ham: when the 360 came out games were £50. Flat rate, no questions, £50. Now, new titles are hovering around 40. Same thing has happened with the ps3. Some good deals on wii games can be found with new releases costing 32 pounds, and now i refuse to buy a wi game at any more than that. You're correct that its about "getting used to" prices. Its like getting into a hot bath. You're nuts are hurting all the way, but you've got to take it if you want to take part.
@DasKonstruct: I thought it was crap too but I've never been a fan of the series.
@dionion: I loved the hell out of DMC3 and the ass whippings it brought but this sequel's demo was just dull.
@cchrist:
Burnout sales UK [www.gamesindustry.biz]
53% X360
47% PS3
Stringers comment about the closing gap in UK makes sense
@Kenofthedead:
In the UK?
Not according to the sales figures.
BTW:
amazon.de price is
X360 € 58,95
PS3 € 62,95
not a big difference!
@cchrist: Actually if you believe David Reeve, There are more PS3's sold on the majority of the european market.
@DON KING: So would the supplier be the game publishers or just some company? Either way it's not Sony or Capcoms fault I guess.
doesn't matter, I will get the PS3 version. It looks and plays better.
At least 360 game prices are coming down. For the first year or so every game was £50 or in some cases more. Now pretty much everything starts at £40 or just under, and there are heavy discounts after a few months. You can pick up Stranglehold for £20 new in HMV or £14 used in Game.
I buy all my games online, where i get like £5 or more off. But still, why is this only happening in the U.K?
i'm from taiwan and i also own all 3 current (next?) gen consoles. When a game comes out on both the xbox and the ps3, I ususally end up buying it for the xbox because its always cheaper. Always. Sometimes by almost as much as NTD500 (About $15)
I don't exactly show favoritism to for the xbox either, its just a wiser, financially sound decision. I'm not sure why its always cheaper though. Maybe the cost of a blu-ray disc > a dual layer dvd? Perhaps, but it doesnt explain why most games are 59.99 in the states for both platforms.
I have a feeling it could have something to do with microsoft trying to fight piracy in their own little way but i could be wrong.
Well it doesn't matter. i have a copy of DMC4 in my hands right now anyways. My local gamestore had some on the shelves today even though it wasn't supposed to be until the 31st. score!
GMC beat me to it.
@bakedham
Are you really suggesting that retailers are sabatoging sony DMC4 sales by raising the price? This PS3 conspiracy stuff is way out of control. Since the annoncement of multiplat for DMC4, I have read posts from PS3 fans touting that the sony version will have greater graphics and gameplay (snicker)......maybe that's the reason for the extra expense.
oh and I got it for the PS3 because the xbox version was no where to be found. It was NTD1800 ($56)
