Firmware 3.90 hits. Brings Skype! To get, PSP owners access the Network Update. 3.90 also expands support for PSN titles. Though, be aware: the Skype feature is only for Slim & Lite PSP-2000 series. Everyone else, you're shit outta luck. Take that early adopters!

Is Skype any good ?
Unfortunately the update in Japan doesn't include Skype. They say they're still dealing with Skype about some mic compatibility... Too bad, all I have is a microphone that I can only use with Talkman...
yippee i guess?
Yeah, early adopters are almost always getting screwed when it comes to electronics. PSP, computers, PDA, X-Box 360, TVs, stand alone Blu-Ray players, HD-DVD players period, PS3s . . . oh, wait; scratch that last one. Early adopters of the PS3 that could blow the $600 got the best deal in this entire console generation.
EVOANUBIS- PS3's did screw early adopters with quick price drop, and lack of rumble.
you've screwed me again sony
@xAngelGabrielx: early adopters know they will be screwed and they accept it most of the time.
As for the psp-skype thingy.. well... how is this different to skype with the laptop I have, which I take everywhere with me... yea I know I could google for how it works.. but I'm too lazy right now ^^
@medik: I completely agree with you its just evoanubis made it seem as though the PS3 did not and though I love my PS3 there was a big downside to being an early adopter there as well.
You mean adopters right? :P
@medik: I think its pretty much the same. I used Skype for a while since it was free to use to call phones for a period of time. Once they went back to charing to call I stopped using it. Its still free to communicate with other users but not dial out.
@EvoAnubis: at least it paid off for the ps3 :P
Here's my fat PSP not getting any skype! :(
@o0q: Call the test call number and it worked flawlessly. I don't have a microphone, so can't comment on the voice quality, but I could hear the sound coming from the other side pretty well. Only issue with it is that you can't can't play games or play music while running Skype. Also, you can't send SMS and text messages.
"Take that early adapters!" - Brian Ashcraft
The irony of this typo is too hilarious to not point out.
Who the hell wants Skype on the PSP anyway?
Don't most people carry mobile phones?
Don't a lot of mobile phones have the ability to use voip anyway?
Which most people don't use anyway because their service plans give enough free minutes to recite War and Peace and not be charged a penny?
It is a pointless addition to an increasingly pointless piece of hardware.
I have a handful of PSPs which I use for writing homebrew software, or at least trying to ;)
Its a great little games machine, but it doesn't need to be a phone as well. Its all getting a little too much like nGage for comfort to be honest :)
Anyone know when GPS is coming to PSP? Have they firmed up a date yet or no? I think it would be great for my vehicle. I'm more interested in that than Skype.
Bashcraft's head wants to run into my old PSP at high-speeds.
Boo~ No need to upgrade just yet, keep brining out new features~
Early adapters? I thought it was adopters. At any rate I hardly think that buying something 2 years before an upgraded model came out is an early adopter. Less than 1 year sure but no more than that. Besides, I'd rather complain about the new, lower price rather than the new features, especially this one, as it seems like a pain to use.
@xAngelGabrielx: Quick price prop? On what? The lessor models? And as for rumble, you're missing the point. I can still go and by a Dual Shock 3 if I wanted to, but there's no add on that can give a fat PSP Skype.
@xAngelGabrielx: Which was what, exactly? My PS3 can do things that no PS3 being currently offered can match.
Let me say more about my point. When I'm talking about early adopter things, I don't mean crap like price drops (which happens to damn near EVERYTHING) and things that can be added later on. I'm talking about things that the first generation of a product cannot do that later generations can.
Recent examples would be early stand alone Blu-Ray players not being able to have their firmware updated, making everything after Blu-Ray 1.0 useless in the new features department, and the early 360's lacking HDMI.
Now, as far as the PS3 is concerned, I'd love it if someone could explain to me what my 60GB PS3 can't do that the 40GB models can.
Actually, this is the first time ever that as an early adopter, I don't feel like I kinda got screwed.
@EvoAnubis: Then how can you count the 360 since Kotaku already did a story about an adapter that is being released. Then there is the fact that now Sony has Wifi built in on every model but the 20 gig launch model does not have that. Every thing has trade offs but if it was between being able to have BC orsave a couple two hundred bucks plus have built in rumble makes it seem that Launch was not the time to get the PS3 for some.
@EvoAnubis: sorry for the errors in my last post but my son has me watch cars and couldn't double check my comment.
ahh, sucks.
My internet connection is piece of 5#!7! I was downloading the update on my psp, it took me two hours and when it got to 95% I got disconnected from the internet and the download failed!
Is there any way to download the update to my computer and then put it on the psp?
@xAngelGabrielx: *chuckles* No worries. And as far as the 360/HDMI thing is concerned . . . lie to me. Tell me you're not referring to that $90 MadCatz device. Even if you are, you have a point there; I had forgotten about that. Although, in my own defense, you still can't watch an HD-DVD movie in 1080p (it'll switch back to 1080i) and it apparently has some problems with screen flickering until it warms up.
However, the rumble . . . come on. As I said before, I could go out and get one if I chose to.
Now, as for the 20GB PS3 . . . *chuckles* . . . did anyone actually buy that? If so, I'm sorry, but even my 10 year old cousin knew the things was too gimped to be worth the money. I've said it once, and I'll say it again, IMO the only "real" PS3 is the 60GB one.
Wow, I don't get Skype. I've got MSN, AIM, Yahoo, and even GoogleTalk, but the PSP gets the one IM service that I don't subscribe to? BAAWWWWWW.
@EvoAnubis: I don't know why people say software BC sucks as compared to EEBC. If anything, I think the Cell processor should be more than capable of that sort of thing.
@EvoAnubis: Sony launched with two consoles and History you can't rewrite History (without killing off witnesses) and when the PS3 Launched in PAL territories it was gimped so early adopters there were screwed just because of the locale. Now I am with you the the PS3 was worth the money but the best time to buy a CE product is always tomorrow.
I find it upsetting that the "fat" PSP isn't getting skype. I know it's not compatible, but no love for the people (me) that bought the system on it's release and love it no matter what people say about it's lack of games.
=(
Hell, a free game would be nice.
@xAngelGabrielx: On that we can certainly agree. I forgot that other regions more or less got screwed from the get-go.
I'll just say that I certainly have no regrets.
Give the hacked firmware a few months, they'll get skype going.
@EvoAnubis: Neither do I. I got a bunch of Blu-Ray movies, a great game console and a decent media hub. Plus being able to retire my PS2 to the closet and free up my media center is nice. The Wii is the only console that without a price drop is not worth it to me.
Hey is there any way to download the latest firmware for the psp on my computer_?
ooh don't worry, D_A will come with a custom firmware that will have skype for the phat users ;) just a matter of time!
Sweet I guess But I cant wait till firmware 4.0 cause thats when PSP is going to be able to play DivX and thats awesome.
@xAngelGabrielx: I've done much the same thing. Picked up a bunch of Blu-Ray movies, play Fire Pro Wrestling and Indigo Prophesy a whole lot, download movies, and blow up anything that dares to be in my sky in Warhawk.
Question, If i have oficial formware 3.8, and i want to wait for custom firmware 3.9, do i just upgrade with the custom and it will work, or do i have to do something special. I want to be able to play n64 and NES and GBA games on my psp, but still be able to play the new games that are coming out. Can someone please give me advice on this?
@EvoAnubis: What sucks for me is that I moved when I bought Warhawk and still have not got to play it. Frustration is the key word with my new ISP but hopefully get fiber optic through FIOS by the end of February.
@finder39: I doubt any games you're buying any time soon will require 3.90. Stick with what you have and wait for more custom firmware.
Damn you PSP Slim!
Damn you!
Damn you to EMP Hell!
@TearsandScreams: yeah, I'm getting patapona dn i think need for speed prostreet. I have a question though. I have 3.90 downloaded on my PSP but not installed, and have 3.80 official firmware on my psp installed. When 3.90 custom firmware comes out, hopefully in a short number of days, do i just download that and rename 3.90 offical firmware to what it says and install it or do i need to do something to my psp. I have a slim. I've never used custom firmware before. Also, what are the chances of it screwing up my PSP?
@finder39: Chances are slim to nil if you follow instructions carefully, and there is some way to unbrick the psp using the battery. I'm afraid I'm going to have to suggest google for much more detail I'm afraid, because I don't want to get in trouble for explaining how to do what is a questionable practise, and I'm not sure if I can link to sites or not.
@Frank: Yeah, because if Sony and other companies say that the PS3's hardware is that powerful, then should have came up with a way for the PS3 to analyze the PS2 graphics and show up on any screen without a problem.
They should take some time to see if they could do that, instead of focusing canceling previous console models that were capable these actions. I wonder how many people actually paid or are going to pay for the 40GB model without knowing it doesn't play PS2 games?
I don't need skype on my large and burly PSP....I have a fucking cell phone.
