All that "hoping" and "exploring" in regard to a Nintendo DS version of Guitar Hero may become reality soon. And that reality may be named Guitar Hero On Tour, if a recently unearthed trademark filed by Activision matches up. The filing, which was discovered by Trademork, is dated January 19th of 2008, is certainly video game related, as it applies to an "interactive video game comprised of a cartridge or DVD sold as a unit with a video game controller."
RedOctane co-founder Charles Huang mentioned to GameSpot last summer that a DS-specific controller peripheral was "definitely one of the options we're exploring." We have little doubt that Activision and RedOctane will be doing their best to capitalize on the Guitar Hero name on every single platform they can, so we expect an announcement soon.

Bulking up a portable is not really what I want to do, but this would probably sell really, really well.
My question is how would you hold the peripheral and be able to see the screen at the same time (assuming you're right-handed)? Maybe you play with the DS upside down?
How in the hell are you supposed to play a guitar and hold the DS at the same time? At the risk of being tautological, if you aren't looking at a screen while you play, it's not a video game. If you have to set it on a table to play it, it's not handheld. Words are important, people.
I have a feeling it will be like Ouendan, but your taps correspond to strums instead of cheering. Not that that's a bad thing, but it should be obvious which is better: playing guitar on stage, or cheering on a small boy as he attempts to not wet the bed in spite of his dreams filled with running water.
As long as it doesnt cost as much as the console versions do.
Some games should not be made.
@darthmole12: Maybe a small guitar plugged into the GBA slot of the ds, or maybe it work with the wifi of the ds...
Wait, I get it... the strum bar and neck buttons go on the back of the DS (through the GBA port, as tocatl suggested) so you can hold it and see the screen. Still, that would turn out more like Ukulele Hero.
mmmm maybe finger tapping on the screen?
WAIT! I GET IT!
They are at long last making a DS game that only Zaphod Beeblebrox can play! Now he really WILL be the hoopiest frood in the hyper-galaxy!
@SaintWaldo: im voting that as the nerdiest comment of the week. good work
Perhaps its like that drum game that someone did a parody cover with, but its only sold in japan. Someone will know the name I'm sure. Not sure where the peripheral comes into play though, they'll figure something out.
...vince neil...
Yeah, I'm curious to see how the final peripheral turns out as well. I remember here a while back, Kotaku posted an artist's concept of what it could look like, with the neck sticking out one side of the ds, and the strum bar out the other. When I play guitar hero I tend to jerk the guitar fairly hard when I double-strum. I know many others that do as well.
My guess would be something that you sit on a table (as SaintWaldo said) and hook up a peripheral too... Who knows?
@Torgen thinks AAA has lost all meaning: Even rock band is possible on the ds, of course it would be 1 player only with 2d graphics, unless your could get another 3 DSs...
I'm still awaiting the announcement of Beatmania IIDS. All Konami needs is a 5 or 7 key controller that plugs into the GBA slot :P
Don't do it, Activision! It's a trap! A trap of lameness!
I wouldn't want to play it on the DS's tiny screens. Bad move activision, bad move.
This doesn't seem like a game that would translate well to portables, but who knows, they've made crazier games work.
Well, all I have to say is that I think the game is pretty definite, at least to me. I recently played Xbox Live with a member of my favorite band Jimmy Eat World and he said that teir song "The Middle" would be in the DS version. Who knows though.
Hopefully there is no peripheral, instead using the touch screen & stylus for strumming the note bars, and the second screen showing the performance/crowd.
Besides a peripheral for a portable system defies logic.
I actually think this would be huge. Kids look up to the big boys, who are all playing Guitar Hero and Rock Band now, so if its a cool game with motion sensing, that would be huge.
I think the description of the artists rendition. I picture a small dock to place your DS (probably lite only unless they have an adapter) that can rotate for right or left handers and then have the keys on the left of the DS and the strum bar on the right so your hand doesn't block the screen. The dock could possibly even be mounted be placed at an angle so you can take advantage of both screens. Star Power and such on the bottom, notes on the top. This might have you constantly looking down at your mini-guitar but I think it's possible. Not as good as the console version but then again... are handheld versions ever as good?
They shouldn't make it with a peripheral, but just make it like Elite Beat Agents, with kick ass rock songs and funny storylines for each song. I would totally play it
So yeah I figured it out. If you're strumming on the touch screen while it's vertical, you pivot the top screen so you can look down and see the notes and leave the strum bar in the appropriate place. Although this means they'd need to fit everything on the top screen. But this would make sense because you'd be turning the speakers on the DS towards yourself, instead of everyone else hearing it.
I'd play this at home, but I'd bring it to school and totally show of all day.
Jam Sessions clone with GH branding?
There is Taiko No Drum for the DS already. Fun times! Playing the Super Mario theme and the old theme songs from classic arcade games is cool too.
@ KIRKPAD Wouldn't that make the top screen pretty hard to see? I would think that if you held it like a real guitar that your hand would be in the way of the top screen when you strum...
maybe the guitar attaches itself to the DS in such a way that you hold it like a guitar whilst looking down at the top screen, which is adjusted perpendicular to it...
