Wow, this writers' strike needs to end, like now. It's one thing for Ellen DeGeneres to highlight her love of Guitar Hero by jamming through a song on her show. But now she's roping in kids from YouTube to play a video game.
At least that's what I thought before watching the video, but I totally changed my mind after seeing 12-year-old Kevin Shen wailing on expert in the video. I think it's wonderful that Ellen is giving such positive press to video games and Shen, he got to stand in front of an audience of screaming women and pretend to play guitar. Pretty kick ass.

haha, i still think her playing was awesome though xD
...wow. cancel her show already, this is retarded.
This is just sad, pathetic and above average stupid.
Could you expect anything more from the Ellen show?
I just saw this.
This kid is pwnage, but w/e happened to that 8 year old kid that can pwn all the songs in GH2?
@Xehirut: or television in general
it IS good for videogames to get good press especially when other networks are doing their best to give games negative press
Blame the greedy studios for not paying writers for sales of special collections and box sets not the shows trying to struggle to stay afloat.
@Ruzzel26: He's russian if I remember right, and i doubt Ellen'd pay to have him flown in, since that's a lot of red tape for a minor to travel like that.
nice, he's a Jersey boy! Lives not far from me.
Psh, Ben owns that kid.
[youtube.com]
@Ruzzel26:
He's still around. I think his name is Ben. Recently saw a youtube vid of him doing the dragonforce song in GH3 on expert.
i didnt realize you could still get to be the host on a talk show with a terrible imp-p-p-p-ediment.
hax
It's inevitable, so I'm going to do it.
That kid could be a talented guitarist. Why's he playing GH when he could be playing a real instrument?
Kid is good. He actually uses the whami bar too. I've noticed a lot of expert level players avoid the whami bar.
This once again proves that Asian gamers are superior to other gamers in every game...ever.
TV. Where we watch people play video games. Why not watch Ellen via tv in Second Life..
Too meta, and too boring..
[www.break.com]
that kid is way better.. he can atleast hammer on the intro
and OF COURSE he's Asian... XD
Why does she have a show?
boy: she's four months younger
audience: BWHAHAHAHAHA
WTF and a half?
Nothing says "manly" like playing Guitar Hero on The Ellen DeGeneres Show!
Hey he's actually pretty good! I though perhaps they wouldn't actually find someone good, but they seem to have done just that. Of course, it is true that as far as material for a talk show goes, this is definitely a sign of the producers desperately scraping around for time fillers.
IS it just me or did he do the whole intro without using the tapping technique? That was pretty awesome
Hmm, it's funny how well an audience reacts to a kid doing well at a videogame...
If I went up there and showed off my "UB3R W4V3D4SHING sKILLZ" would they care?
@TinyLightning: i dont think so
@TinyLightning: hi this is TV without writers. I dont know if you realize there is a strike going on and they haven't had writers for any of these shows for months now.
I think this kid kicked my ass online...
If only that were a skill.
lol. impressive kid.. but hearing the crowd of women in the background cheering made me laugh.. is this really a show worth watching.. otherwise i'm glad to see ppl like Ellen digging on games. =P
oh...my...god....GO KID GO
The audience scares me. D:
The kid does pretty good though considering the pressure that must have been on him.
Wow.. how retarded.
*Sigh* I knew GH would cause this someday. Now no one will care if we play real guitar.
there's a youtube video of a younger kid playing better.
he just has to do Dragonforce as well, eh.
Okay let me just say this..... Go East Brunswick. Its kind of sad that im from North Brunswick though.
I can see why other people wouldn't, but I totally loved watching this! Just the fact that it's basically, "Yeah, this dude is really good at a video game, check it out for 5 minutes." it's still badass to even feature it.
@SamKablam: i was going to counter with MVC2 but theres Justin Wong. damn
Hang on, now. I caught this on TV an hour ago (my mom called me to say "You gotta see this!")... and the kid scored about 155k.
The top score on guitarhero.com is 500k or more, and the rest of the tops are in that range. Now I don't wanna bash the kid, getting through Dragonforce on Expert in general is a feat, but... to claim he did it perfect or is unbeatable like Ellen's saying is kinda silly.
I hate you Ellen DeGeneres. So fucking much.
Also, I love how the crowd is like "OH I HEAR CLUNKS AND WAILS EVERYWHERE SO HE MUST NOT BE GOOD 8-D"
Gotta admit the kid's far far better at Guitar Hero than I am.
I like Ellen... it's the only daytime talk show that doesn't suck (Dr. Phil, Oprah literally give me headaches)
Anyways, playing Expert well is quite dorky. Only in the company of my better friends who play Guitar Hero with me do I let know I play expert.
Wow, he could be a pretty talented guitarist with some practice. He has great finger dexterity and coordination.
@Xehirut:
They're having fun with the show. It promotes videogames and gives a 12 year-old who can play a videogame exceedingly well for his age a large boost of self-esteem. There is not one thing wrong with this entire clip.
Whoa. I didn't get the memo that it was cool to hate Ellen. Will somebody forward that to me?
C'mon. She had a kid on promoting a video game with his awesome ability, why all the hate?
Oh, right...internet.
@DigiMish: Was he playing on national television in front of a huge audience of screaming women? I don't think he was. Until he does that and does it as well as this kid, I say stop trying to make the kid out to be average, or something. He's pretty goddamn excellent.
I love the fact he's using the far less superior guitar (IMO)
Insance, kid has skills. I can only beat like the first song on expert, oh well.
@Eddy666: Sorry but it just makes you realize that no one cares that people can play the guitar. It helps people now focus on the long lost art of playing the Keytar, the real man's instrument of pain.
I can't believe when I got 1million notes it said YOU ARE F@GS (courtesy of southpark):p
@THEMYSTERIOUSSTRANGER:
Nothing says "manly" like being... a little kid.
Wow, just wow. South Park was right. The only way this could have been any worse is if it was just him clicking away without the music and the screen behind him. She should have gotten one of those little 8 year old kids who shreds through Paganini on a real guitar. Now that shit is impressive, this is just stupid. Then again, its Ellen so I guess I shouldnt expect much.
is anyone else sick of seeing people showing off at guitar hero, no matter how young they are. it's a fun game, if you haven't got rock band. but the emphasis isn't really on playing music of any form any more (and yes, i do believe it once was).
it's just mashing buttons quickly now.
So ... they just cut off the song early without getting to the hard part yet?
And nobody is better than him? *scoff*
Pssshh... EB kids think they're so cool.
this is where I think a certain episode of south park says it all: we -really- overrate this game too much.
I mean...a kid that beats a game is simply a kid that can read and bash really fast on the guitar, as where the real guitarist composed the arrangements (in some cases) and put some practice...and they KNOW it, they don't read it off screens.
Want Ì'd like to see?
Bring in the GROUP and let them perform the songs.
(and yes, I'm a fan of guitar hero, I'm just not a fan of overrated geekness)
@Xehirut: Haha, I'm wonder if it's more sad to troll on kotaku and rip on a 12 yr old kid playing Guitar Hero better than you. Yea it pretty much is.
There were parts where he was 'faking', strumming and working the frets rapidly to hit more notes, but his extension is really impressive for a 12 year old. I've seen better, but he's really good. When he grows up, he'll own that thing proper.
I happened to have broken the small joint on my pinky as a kid, and it healed a bit crooked, causing it to curve towards my ring finger, it makes tapping orange while holding green really, really hard. It affects basically no other aspect of my life, but here I am 20 years later thinking "damn! The hammeron intro to TFAF is killing me here! If only I hadn't broken my pinky!"
@PGGB: Its mashing buttons "correctly" and quickly.
You left out the most important part.
Wow, the haters really need to chill. This was pretty awesome.
Somebody get this kid a real guitar.
Goddamn, Ellen stutters like a drunk.
Nice to see a kid from Jersey though. NJ Pride!
Bright side: That may be the most screaming women ever to be in one room listening to DragonForce.
