Earlier, we brought news of a minor Super Smash Bros. Brawl bug. The screen goes black and displays an error message that the game cannot be booted. However, the bug doesn't actually effect the game and can be ignored. Another retail-minded site Game no Urabanashi confirms this rumor, point out that the error message occurs when the game is first started up on consoles that haven't been updated since last summer. Game no Urabanashi doesn't see the bug as a huge problem as it can be corrected, but does point out that it could be an issue if not all customers are aware of it. The Nintendo flier that stores will apparently be giving out has popped up online. This looks like pretty good confirmation, but we're still going to call this a rumor until we're able to verify for ourselves when SSBB drops this Thursday in Japan. For a game that's been delayed repeatedly, this seems, well, pretty shitty. If this is true, why is Nintendo, known for its impeccable quality, willing to ship its biggest title with a bug? Then again, Paper Mario had a bug and the DS Lite had hinge cracks, so. One thing you can bet, Nintendo would've never shipped Wii Fit with a bug. No way in hell.

Some bugs are squishy and some are crunchy!
Hmm, I heard that it was just something to do with a system update, but if it isn't... Well, that sucks.
Oh, and [www.youtube.com]
Why is it being released? Because they where afraid fans would raid the development center if another delay was announced. The one-month delay for the US version is starting to make more sense.
Just out of curiosity, and to justify my avatar, what was the bug in Paper Mario?
Do I detect a hint of bitterness in this post?
New trend? First Microsoft going through with the hardware defective 360's at launch, now this?
The sign says you need to update the system before you can play it, but the bug occurs the first time you try to play. It will not occur a second time if you follow the instructions below...which are cut off the image above. Helpful!
There was a bug in Mario Galaxy... You had to ground-pound it three times to defeat it and get the star.
Not that kind of bug? Oops.
I was reading about this earlier, and I don't think its a bug in the game, just a warning/help message for the firmware update that comes with it. (in case it doesn't work or something) The same thing came with Super Mario Galaxy.
@ZeroTheFool: Yeah, after delaying it so many times, you'd expect the game to be in prestine condition. Hm, maybe this is why the US got a longer delay then Japan, to fix it.
@zerbrechen: NICE! How'd you hear about this video? Randomly searched it out of curiosity?
@zerbrechen:
Wow thanks for the video ! Ness and Marth are in !
Honestly, that's kind of pathetic given how long this game was in development. Perhaps it was a bug in the actual "printing" of the game, where some shitty corrupted snag got in?
@zerbrechen: Eh, nevermind about the video, it was in the previous Kotaku post. I swear, that wasn't there earlier, haha.
@Jaymac: It's starts with "G" and rhymes with "amefaqs"... Please, don't force me to say anymore, shame coarses through my veins...
Since this is still a rumour, furthur speculation seems to imply that this is a bug that happens with all Wii games when a Wii System Upgrade is required and it fails. So it's not the game, as much as the system itself running into problems.
@zerbrechen: Nice!
WTB Ganondorf though :(
Meh. As much as I hate it, software updates on consoles are slowly becoming the rule rather than the exception.
I've found a bug in Corruption, where Dark Samus freezes and refuses to die. Had to commit suicide to finish the fight.
They'd better damn have this fixed by release. Thursday? Man... EUROPEAN RELEASE DATE YOU STUPID FUCKS AT NINTENDO ARGH$*@#R@#RWY#*$HF^W#*$%FGW*%FW*$%FYW*%YHNWF*(#%^GH*(W&%*(#&$Y%GJ*(W#%$G
@metadae: Maybe ASH is like many other ssb core fans that are angry because the game had many delays...
It sounds like it only says it once when you update your system, and then it doesn't happen again. Which isn't really that bad. Though, I agree that people will freak out. Hopefully it wont happen in the US.
The intro is pretty cool. Unlike the previous games, it actually shows relation and teamwork between the various characters.
Honestly? I wouldn't blame the devs, I'd blame their QA.
But then a bug is just a bug and for a game the size that SSBB this is totally understandable.
I love the unnecessary but completely justified hating of Wii Fit in this post.
@zerbrechen: OMFG! JESUSCHRIST.
Marth,confirmed. 1:47
Thank you very much.
If it doesn't affect the gameplay in any way, who really cares? Either way, I'm sure it'll be fixed by by the North American release.
@Gloibin: [www.wiiwii.tv]
Basically, in the Euro version, if you don't pick up a key a character points you towards, the game freezes.
I found it strange not to see in Luigi in the intro,well,i guess it will be an unlockable character for the 3rd time
@EnigmaNemesis:
And some will brutally fuck you in the ass after 40 hours of gameplay (thank you Twilight Princess).
If I got my facts straight the problem is that some feature of SSBB require functionality that came in a Wii firmware upgrade some time ago. The error here is that the game shipped without the firmware upgrade included in the disc to apply it automatically once you load the game the first time. I don't think that it's an actual bug in the game code.
Two more days... two more days...
OMFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Smash related nes. Character leak!!! And a big one!!!!!
SPOILERS Watch out!!!

@Janaff: Sounds like it from what I've read about this. Makes you wonder why they can't get the same bug squashed though, even if it's something that can only happen once during the life of your console.
@Aiwokote: It wasn't anything unexpected.
I like how you posted an image that says, "instructions to solve this problem are on the back," and don't post the image of the back.
@Torgen thinks AAA has lost all meaning:
I like how you think I have an image of the back.
Guys.. it's a firmware update. NOT a bug. At least I'm convinced it is. I recall MP3:C having me install new firmware as well.
@Brian Ashcraft: Touché.
@dynendal:
Why would you blame their QA?
Do you know for a fact that they didn't find this issue?
Games ship with Showstopper bugs that were found and reported by QA all the time.
Also, if the game doesn't play correctly out of the box, then yes it IS a bug. From what I understand you get an error message, NOT an update message that then leads you to an update. And if that is the case, then it is a bug.
Pretty lowsy that reading comments in a post about a bug give me the spoilers from the intro video post which I chose to skip.
@zerbrechen: Yay for Marth. But I'll still be using Ness, anyway. >.>;
@DYNENDAL
The buck always stops with the devs, no matter what's going on (or not going on) in QA.
the guy in 2ch keeps updating once in a while, so far, captain falcon is not confirmed yet as an unlockable
This is not a bug with SSBB, it sounds like a bug with the older Wii firmware not knowing what to do with a game that requires the newest Wii firmware. If I read the article correctly, an update of the Wii should resolve the issue. I hope this "feature" (see what I did there) prevents modders from being able to play the game.
bug? sounds like a anti-piracy check, and many games carry the updates inside the disc so unless you are one of those "my wii has been gathering dust for a year" you are ok.
Welcome To the game Nintendo. So you finaly decided to actually use firmware updates eh? Seems like you have much to learn about firmware. The PS3 and 360 does it. Hell the psp does it, so why is it just now that your making people update? Also I hope that the game comes with the firmware update otherwise you are SOL if you dont have the internet.
@einlander: Are you high? Or just trolling? There have been a number of firmware upgrades for the Wii, available as downloads thru WiiConnect24 or included on discs that require them.
@EnigmaNemesis:
Ok, I laughed way to hard at that.
Moms everywhere will freak at this kind of bug.
One thing you can bet, Nintendo would've never shipped Wii Fit with a bug. No way in hell.
I'm pretty certain they actually did ship it with a bug... all software ships with bugs. Just the way it works.
I agree they probably didn't ship it with a serious known bug - but I'd also be willing to bet this SSBB bug isn't really *that* critical (alarming for users who hit it, yes, but not fatal and how many people haven't got the newer firmware by now)... and also that it wasn't known much before shipping. (Wonder if they didn't have a test lab of Wiis with every firmware version? You'd have thought they did...)
"the error message occurs when the game is first started up on consoles that haven't been updated since last summer."
Sometimes I wonder why... People get so hyped up! OBVIOUSLY your going to get an error if you don't update! It even said it in the Super Mario Galaxy Manual: "Please note that when first loading the Game Disk into the Wii console, the Wii will check if you have the latest system menu.."
So to solve the issue? SYSTEM UPDATE.
As far as I'm concerned, 99% of people who buy this game will have bought Super Mario Galaxy which updated the firmware anyway.
