A few days ago I headed to downtown San Francisco to meet up with the Tetsuya Mizuguchi and the folks from Q Entertainment as they did their final push for Rez HD before it officially hits XBLA this coming Wednesday. I was ushered into a hotel room and seated on a comfy couch in front of a nice big screen displaying the familiar beats and graphics of Rez. The next thing I knew I was being handed three different controllers: one was placed behind my back, one on the floor under my feet and the third in my hands to control the game. This, I was told, was "the Miz way" to play. As it turned out, the Miz way was the way to go.
They fired up the game, I chose my level and as soon as it started I could feel the first pulses of vibration at the small of my back, at my feet and in my hands. As the level progressed the vibration became more intense and the controllers did not always vibrate in tandem, sometimes they ping-ponged back and forth creating a unique sensation. Having only played the Dreamcast version and not being among the small number of people to have actually gotten a hold of a trance vibrator, I had no idea how immersive having all that extra vibration could be. If you have played Rez before and were on the fence about getting Rez HD, the multiple controller vibration (it can support up to four) should be enough to push you over the side.
When we saw the game demoed in Tokyo last year, they were still undecided on how they would incorporate the vibration into the game. One thing they didn't want to have to do was design a new peripheral, so they needed to come up with something else as Mizuguchi explains..
In this game, the vibration is really important. The mix of sound, music and vibration is like a chemistry. I didn't just want to have controller vibration, I wanted to do the Trance Vibration again and that kind of thing is difficult to reproduce. So one day, one of the game designers came up with the idea of the multiple controller vibration since most people have more than one 360 controller. We all thought it was a really fantastic idea.
Since the announcement that the PS3 controllers would once again feature rumble, I asked is they had considered bringing Rez HD to the PSN Store as well and Mizuguchi said that yes, it is definitley something they would like to do and have considered. So if all goes well, PS3 owners could well see Rez HD arriving on their consoles in the near future. For 360 owners just a few more days and you'll be playing Rez HD in all its vibrating glory. Remember, one controller at the small of your back, one at your feet and one in your hands, that's the Miz way. As to where you put that fourth, that is entirely up to you, just remember to wipe it off when your done.

When we have 2 controllers only, should we choose the feet or the back?
I already know where I'm putting the fourth controller. (@q@)
The back one I understand, but how foes the feet one work? Do you sort of grasp it with your feet?
Feet?? what if i'm ticklish??
Wait, so your feet rest on a controller, and your back rests on a controller? I must be missing something because the former seems like it would prove to be quite uncomfortable.
Err, the latter rather.
How do I make it have sex with my girlfriend? Clearly I need to mod a controller into a vibrator. HOMEBREW APPLICATION OF TECHNOLOGY, HERE WE GO!
@Xander7447:
Its not that big of a deal on a couch. You could easily tuck a controller into a cushion.
Ugh, I only have one wireless controller. Not fair.
@ComradeStalin: That's what she said.
Ohh a possibility of PSN. Still buying the 360 vesion. Just need to go buy points. And Gold membeship. And more contollers. And some tape. (not being sarcastic or mean, its all true)
@GUNDAM-RX-78-2: You could wear a fanny-pack backwards on your back with a controller in it.
When this comes to the PS3, it will be the first (and possibly only) PSN title I will actually buy.
Dang, I really wish I had a 360. I've played the dreamcast version to death. Get job. Save money. REZ HD.
Hm...when this comes to the Ps3, I know where I'm sticking the fourth controller!
Under a pillow that I'll rest my head against, naturally.
Sickos.
@badasscat: Wow. You're missing out then.
Also, it can be hard to fin, but anyone interested should track down a copy of Rez A gamer's guide. It's the soundtrack with new versions of all the songs plus some bonus tracks. I think it's way out of print, but you can find it on slsk.
Perhaps Mizuguchi is trying to expand the audience of his games to women. /@\
Somehow I think his approach will work over Nintendo's :)
@ComradeStalin: That's just asking for a Jew joke about big noses.
@Dang-fuzz: Yes. Yes. It is amazing. The version of 'Fear' on it is not as good as the one in the game (or on an actual Adam Freeland CD, where it is even better), but Boogie Running Beats is fantastic on it -- as is everything else.
@ceilingFANBOY: gets shrinkage on Saturday: huh? I don't follow...
Oh damn, the controllers vibrate separately?
Dammit, I need to get some more 360 controllers then
Wii version.
Wiimotes getting some action.
hahaha.
now that would be funny.
if it worked.
@ComradeStalin: Cut me some slack, I'm cold and working off of no sleep. Can't quite go to bed yet because I don't want to wake up at 5 in the morning. I was going for something around the lines of "you must be Jew if you can get that controller in your nose," but I knew that I couldn't come up with the right words so I was hoping someone else would pick up.
I don't think the 360 controller is properly contoured for my asshole..
wait did I type that?
Merely wiping the fourth controller won't do.
I hope the game comes with a protective, washable cover like the PS2 version in Japan. That way we can combine the "Miz way" and the "Game Girl Advance" way :D
@onidavin: If only this had rumble... ;-)
Nice, do we have any word on when Ikaruga will be released? I've been out of the loop for a couple weeks...
Great, I'm not a big vibration user, but this game is gonna force me to use Vibration. There go my batteries.
@Cryovat: EWWW I know what you were alluding to!
@onidavin: Good idea. But but i dont want to look like a tourist. Especially not in my own home.
@Cryovat: With its unique styling, full size joystick and spinner control, the Mad Catz Arcade GameStick for Xbox 360 provides the best gaming experience for Xbox LIVE Arcade. Officially licensed by Microsoft, the sleek design compliments your Xbox 360 console and "allows for new gaming experiences". Take the Xbox LIVE Arcade gaming experience to the next level with the Mad Catz Arcade GameStick for Xbox 360.
GROSS!!!
@onidavin: They actually sell "controllers" that do exactly that in Japan. Do some searching online, you might be surprised... O.o
I actually have a Trans Vibrator for Rez (no never used on anyone). But I think I read that the 360 version would not work with it.
Also the version of Rez that I have is the Japanese version so unless I can get a hold of a Japanese PS2 it seems like it will never get used (not that I've found a Rez worthy girl yet anyway).
@UltimatePancakeSensation: Nothing from Japan surprises me. If it can exist, it does in Japan. If it can exist and is used to have sex with something, it exists in Japan twice or more.
Thanks for the tip, though :D Now to terrify people with a dild360.
It hits 360 this Thursday? I hope that's a typo or I won't be able to enjoy it for another month :S
This will bring new meaning to the words spoken by many a teenager "Yes mum i'm cuming right now... I just need to finish this level"
And is it just me or does the 'Miz Way' not play out in your mind as the Jizz Way? On second thoughts it is just me, I need to get out more.
@Inhert: Wednesday.
get a large hat, maybe a cowboy hat, and put the fourth on your nog'n
I want it for PS3 because it could end up supporting DTS (like Uncharted and a few other games). However, I want it now :(
Well, if the PSN version ends up having something cool that the 360 version doesn't I guess I won't sweat the extra $10 for buying both.
Gods bless Japan, and they're bottomless capacity for battery-powered luv. I will be looking for "repurposed" controllers with great interest.
Torrid, sweaty-palmed interest.
@RPGZero: Same boat. At 3 times the price it'd be a bargain, so I've got absolutely no qualms about buying it for both.
For the record, I had both DC and PS2 versions, and the Dreamcast was the better version. Yeah, the PS2 had a higher frame rate (which included frame drops, unfortunately), but how many people knew the Dreamcast had a more powerful sound processor? I never noticed it until I played Rez, but the PS2 version was defintely lacking that "oomph" factor. I can't even being to imagine how awesome 5.1 will sound, much less (if there is a God in Heaven) DTS.
P.S. Problem: only one spare controller? Solution: sit on your subwoofer.

(:
@GUNDAM-RX-78-2: What do you need Gold Membership for? I might hvae missed it, but Rez doesn't have an online component that I remember and you can buy XBLA games with the free Silver account.
Wipe it off when YOU'RE done. UGH.
:p
"Wait! Nipples! What do we think about nipples?
Oh gawd yes, please!! Rez HD for PSN would make my day
@GUNDAM-RX-78-2: FYI you don't need gold membership to buy XBLA games. You just need it to play online games.
@onidavin: I totally agree with you. I was actually super excited to have a cut of Fear on a playlist, but was a little disappointed with how different the Gamer's Guide version was from the original. I'll look for the Adam Freeland album version. Aside from that the Gamer's Guide is incredible.
I just realized I've been missing out on all kinds of vibrating fun ever since I switched to using an X-Arcade stick on my DC Rez. Did anyone out there ever use the rumble pack option on the Dreamcast?
it suks so much that rez AND mercinaries 2 come out so close together and I have no money AND nothing to do
I'm not seeing how putting a controller in the small of your back is comfortable for your back or good for the controller. You're either mashing your analog stick into your back (ow) or into your couch, which can't be very good for them.
Having to sit with your feet together probably isn't the most relaxed position either. Perhaps the fourth controller can be used to put under another foot.
@Dang-fuzz: The album to check out is 'Now and Them' (not a typo). The cut of Fear on it is great.
If my 360 isn't back from service by the time this hits the XBLA, I'm going to be angry. I mean, angrier. Angrier.
If this ever gets released to the PS3 I really hope it'll support 7 controllers at once :O
You forgot to mention that Miz takes 3 hits of Green Dinosaur Ecstasy before playing as well! Yee-hah! Rave on, brother Miz!
@GOLD5: Also, the correct position for the 4th controller is yer girlfriends Cu-cha-ca.
@GOLD5: Two hits of Blue Thunderbird, As long as those controllers still rumble when your failing it would be all good.
Check out this chestnut from Kotaku 2004:
"Americans are way too straight-laced at heart to come out with anything like Rez with its famous vibrator peripheral." - Brian Crecente
[kotaku.com]
Let's all just hope the PSN version supports the original trance vibrator (It was USB after all)
I managed to get a hold of a Trance peripheral off eBay back in the day and I used to sit in a shirt chest pocket, giving you a Rez-styled heartbeat. Strange fun as your simulated heart-beat got crazier and faster the better you did.
I'm also taking 3:1 odds bets that within an hour of the release, they'll be a new Gamer Girl styled blog entry detailing how her boyfriend used it to get her off.
"I managed to get a hold of a Trance peripheral off eBay back in the day and I used to sit in a shirt chest pocket, giving you a Rez-styled heartbeat."
@Mattz_m: Kid, you ain't doin' it right.
I haven't checked out the gamer guide version of Mind Killer, but if you like the version from the game, you should look for the Origin Unknown remix of the track - it's on Adam Freeland's Fa
