For those of you who felt gypped by not being able to get a US version of the MGS Anniversary Collection, it seems that Konami is throwing you something of a bone. PlayAsia is currently taking pre-orders for Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection for the PS2 that includes the original Metal Gear Solid as well as the directors cut of Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance and Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. The listed price is $34.90 plus a $4 dollar shipping charge. If you are looking to delve into the world of MGS before MGS 4 comes out, this is the perfect way to do it at a reasonably low price.
Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection [PlayAsia]

ooh if I had the spare money I'd get it, just for the first MGS lol.
Nice deal.
Hm... directors cut? I might actually get it... :o *thinks about it*
Only $35?! HOT DAMN.
If my PS2 still was functional, I'd probably jump on this. I only played a bit of one during a rental and got stuck somewhere, and have been meaning to go back and try these all out.
I know this might be a dumb question, but is Metal Gear Solid the Gamecube remake version, or the original?
Also... I would love to buy this, it would honestly be one of my most anticipated purchases of the year, and it would push me to really start saving up for a PS3 (I know, that sounds bizarre, but along with Metal Gear Solid 4 this would be a dream) but the lack of backwards compatibility makes it impossible to actually justify getting this, as I plan to get rid of my PS2 when I finally move onto the current generation of Sony. Such a shame. No sarcasm either.
Damnit, I had just bought the 20th Anniversary Collection last week...
Metal Gear Solid 2 Substance??? Hell yeah
This really should be a downloadable on the PSN... has anybody had any good experience with PlayAsia? They had a really good deal on the DS3 a month or so ago but I was afraid that it would take months to get my joystick so I chickened out...
I still have my launch Metal Gear Solid from back in the day, think I'll have to pick this up and retire those old black discs.
@mariospants: oh and play-asia was really fast shipping, I've ordered some japanese ds and PS3 games back in the summer.
I already own Substance and Subsistence, but I really want MGS1. Still, $34 when both Substance and Subsistence sell at $25 each used, this is a bargain!
It says it's a preorder. So is this actually going to come over here then?
@PriorMarcus:
Twin Snakes for the GC is just like the PS1 version, except with improved graphics and changed dialogue in a few places. Alot of fans like the PS1 version but Twin Snakes is good in its own right. If you don't have the two games this box set would be your best bet and have the original PS1 game is nice treat for the fans.
...
Damn I hope Q2 2008 could get here already so I can grab 4.
@PriorMarcus:
Since they mentioned the Director's Cuts, I'd assume they'd mention if it was Twin Snakes or not.
I'm partially through Twin Snakes, with a friend doingm ost of the playing(I apparently can't understand the concept of stealth gameplay, and avoiding combat) but this looks like a good way to avoid going to GameStop and buying 2 probably used games. I'm assuming Director'sd Cut is a BETTER version than if I bought the normal version, so I'm getting this.
They better actually release this for sale IN the US.
No EU version, god dammit why do we always get shafted???
Oh hell yes. But I'm broke as hell right now.
Thankfully, I got my W2 the other day.
Tax season, e-file, and direct deposit for the win!
umm i'd be more tempted to get it if i didn't have MGS3 but it's still really tempting
I want the 20th Anniversary Collection!
I thought about ordering this but then I realized I have all three games.
@ssjmichael: This is as close as we're gonna get. I'm buying this for sure.
Uhhh, Will this be available in europe ? :(
Twin Snakes in my opinion is MUCH better in execution than MGS1, but mostly (for me) because of the addition of the stamina bar.
Considering that you can buy MGS2 at Gamestop for about 6 bucks, I'm not sure this is such an awesomely awesome deal eh?
As for MGS1, if you settle for Twin Snakes on GC, you can get that damn cheap too and to settle it all out, MGS3 isn't very high in price either. Overall I'd say you can probably buy them all individually cheaper than that collection is selling for.
Nice! I'm in for one of course, just for collecting. Anyone not currently in possession of all three should really jump on this. MGS2:Substance in particular is an amazing value, with incredible added value content in addition to the masterpiece that is MGS2:Sons of Liberty. As the owner of a small VG retail shop, I virtually never see any Substance or Subsistence come in used.
Dang, as somebody who's never played a MGS game before this is actually a really good deal. I don't have a PS1 memory card so I couldn't save a file for the original MGS, but I could play the other two just fine. I'll have to think about this.
@DimensionWarped:
Meh.. I would normally say that too, but this is MGS2: Substance--I remember having a bitch of a time even attempting to find it. Winded up caving and just getting the original.
Woot woot! Instant pre-order.
@BD: LOL
wow this is way better than halo games. for the record there two extra games that were made original on msx. The nintendo version was never created kojima. kojima was never involved with. both metal gear games came out on msx then nintendo.
now they just need to come bring out the silent hill pack to the US also
DO WANT!
Even as an owner of MGS: Twin Snakes, MGS2: Substance and MGS3: Subsistence I'm still tempted to get this! (Mostly to see the PS2 version of the original game)
----
As a side note:
Having just seen Rambo in theaters, I *really* want to jump in and play MGS3 again... and I have to admit that I wish MGS4 were set in the jungle, heh. =/
@Stormrider (XBL: Lilarcor):
I tried to play through the first MGS without a memory card and found out the hard way that when they said 'no continues' at the torture bit they weren't fucking around.
@September:
That's exactly the reason I just ordered this off PlayAsia - for MGS2: Substance.
This will make it the third time I buy MGS3, the second time I buy MGS2 and the second time I buy MGS1. Egads.
I wonder how many times I'll buy MGS4.
Questions!
#1) MGS1 for the PS2? Should we expect updated graphics?
#2) MGS2 Director's cut?! Then, will it include the deleted scenes??
#3) $35 is a really nice price. (yeah, that's not a question. bite me.)
I actually own mgs1 for ps1, mgs2 substance for ps2 and subsistence for ps2, but as an avid metal gear fan I really feel the need to pick this up for my collection
@GregoriusH: Really? Because long ago when I only had a N64, I rented from blockbuster a Playstation and MGS for a birthday party. *I* found out the hard way that the game wouldn't allow you to go past 50% because without a memory card, you can't switch to disc 2; it would freeze if I replaced the disc with the power on, and you can't start the 2nd disc without a save file of your progress.
@DimensionWarped: Twin Snakes is about 20 dollars at gamestop, Metal Gear Solid 2 is 6 bucks, but Substance is around 25 for some reason, and subsistence definitely isn't cheap. This package is a bargain.
Damn ass bugger. I own all three already. Hell, I played MGS1 again yesterday. But yet cannot contain the yearning for this. But then I remember, I'm in the UK, where we dont get this kinda thing, unless you wanna go around the rigamarole of modding or importing stuff, which is far to much work for the lazy swine in me. Still...please stop releasing special editions, I'm poor, and have too much MGS stuff anyways. Including the 6 foot MGS3 fibreglass Snake statue. Oh yes. Its true.
@Arttemis:
Torture bit was disc 1 so it might not let you get past halfway through, I don't know. After the first failed attempt I borrowed a friend's ps1 memory card.
@SemiSarcastic: Well, I have both versions and I've beaten them both too... I was just interested in it for clarity's sake.
Does anyone think that, when they say Directors Cut, they might be implying that the original cutscene of Arsenal Gear crashing might be included, or?
@mariospants: It's a trustworthy website. Just don't believe the 5 day air-mail. My DS3 took eight days to get here, because it was sent trough regular mail. So it my vary depending on where you live, but it'll get there nonetheless.
If you want it on time, and if you're up to it, just pay the price it costs to get it through FedEx.
I always purchased Metal Gear Solid when they first came out, so I'm missing the sub_stance versions. Order entered!
@HighlanderWolf: The box says PS1 for MGS.
Consider it bought since that is an utterly cheap price for a series I enjoy so much.
Too bad discs like these are useless in the 40gb PS3
