In the latest "Iwata Asks" column, Super Smash Bros. Brawl lead Masahiro Sakurai tells the Nintendo president more about the game's single player storyline. He also reveals that the man behind the "Subspace Emissary" plot is none other than Kazushige Nojima, scenario writer for Final Fantasy VII. Nojima, also responsible for the scenarios behind games such as Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy X, didn't exactly have the deepest plot in mind when Sakurai approached him about the project.
Nojima's story, if you can call it that, went like this, says Sakurai "Some of the characters are on a bus on the way to the stadium. Samus is there. Donkey Kong is there and Snake is watching the bus from afar." Yeah. Two buses. That's why Nojima gets paid the big bucks, folks.
Fortunately, that idea has since changed to something with a more serious tone. More laughter filled interviewing awaits you.

?? Do fighting games really have story lines. I know soul calibur has one but i mean Smash? A long awaited battle has risen from the universe. Only one Man and his dinosaur will help a lady from the universe defeat the evil in car racing and POKEMON!
I was already excited about the SSE, but seeing who helped right the story makes the fanboy in my cry out for more.
Exactly what scenarios in FF7 did Nojima write? The snowboard ride?
I wonder who came up with the Arwing barrel rolling the Halberd's gun fire? That made the fanboy in me weep openly.
I can't wait until the novelization.
Enough with the Smash Bros. news already, jesus.
They're trophies that come to life to fight each other, as if in the imagination of a small child.
There was nothing wrong with that premise. -.-
well i guess we all now know that princess peach will die in brawl,i think meta knight kills her.
nice.. very nice.
Sakurai: "Well, as I discussed earlier, a fundamental idea at the start of development was that this would be the last Smash Bros. title, and that, ultimately, there would be few opportunities for Nintendo characters and major, well-known characters to gather in the same place."
WHAT?!?!? This is the first I've heard of such terrible news! Is he joking? He has to be, right? Or perhaps a translation error?
no.
@Shindokie (PSN and XBL): Every iteration of King of Fighters has had a storyline (as has most SNK fighters), but I agree with you that it seems pretty ridiculous to even address this aspect of the development process. It's like a guy who is credited as the plot designer for Mario Galaxy, and puts it on his resume.
This remains the aspect of nintendo games that cannot draw me in, and sorely disappoints me. To me, story is just as important as the gameplay - I will play a game with a good story and horrible gameplay just for the good story. The opposite is also true. But to forgo one for the other just seems idiotic when you can have the best of both worlds.
Also, Nojima's resume reads like the president of a doujinshi club. I really don't enjoy his work, nor can I respect him at all. The very fact that he managed to get the characters onto a bus without snake and donkey kong making out is enough of a miracle to me.
@UltimatePancakeSensation: He only says that in terms of how they planned to design it. In other words, make the ultimate Smash Bros. game. He's not implying that Nintendo will never again revisit the franchise.
You know Donkey Kong totally hit on Samus during that bus ride.
@UltimatePancakeSensation: Well, he left Nintendo because he didn't like making sequels.
So... if there is another Smash, he probably won't be working on it.
Epic game is EPIC!
@NathanX: Forget that. I want to know who came up with the idea of Pikachu and Samus teaming up. That made my inner fanboy's head explode.
@Maldron: Agreed. I think that's still the premise. Now it's just more like that child is making them fight some imaginary evil together, not unlike what I did with my old action figures. Still pretty cool.
@DonWii: Nintendo makes sequels? News to me.
@DonWii: I mean... WHEN the next Smash begins production.
There is no way Nintendo won't bring out Smash again.
Hell, if they didn't get Sakurai for this one, they were just going to add online to Melee, and release it as Brawl.
And I would have bought it.
Snake: Fatman. Supposedly he's nicknamed after an atomic bomb, but to me he's just a Fat Man. Something straight out of a sideshow.
Mario: It's me! Marrrrio!
Snake: Listen to me. We're all born with an expiration date. No one lasts forever. Life is nothing but a grace period - for turning our genetic material into the next generation. The data of life is transferred from parent to child. That's how it works. But we have no heirs, no legacy. Cloned from our father, with the ability to reproduce conveniently engineered out. What is our legacy if we cannot pass the torch? Proof of our existence - a mark of some sort. When the torch is passed on from parent to child... it extends beyond DNA; information is imparted as well. All I want is to be remembered. By other people, by history.
Mario:......It's me. Marrrrrio!
Ok ok guys check this out. DK is on a plane and so is Mario and like a bunch of other dudes. They crash onto an island and find Link and Samus there. And then they start deciding whether they should hunt for food or pick fruit and stuff. Mario goes to make a signal fire on top of the mountain but runs into Snake who is dead in a parachute and totally FREAKS out. DK decides that they should stab wild pigs with sharp sticks... wait, have we seen this before?
wow lool can't wait to hear if there is something kh-related actually in ssbb
...and I will care about the story why?
@Krytha: Haha. I forgot th name of the book but haha.
Nice. Yesterday I saw a trailer or something of the game, and really, wow. I'm already excited for all the things in the game, but then I saw some clips from the SSE and got me all excited about that part of the game. And now that we know who is behind it, it just makes things better =D
@Abno: xD Now, replace Mario with Pikachu, Pikachu: Pika? Pika pika pika? xD
@Krellie: Nojima wrote almost the entirety of FFVII. He also wrote Advent Children, Crisis Core, FFX, Kingdom Hearts, and a ton of other games. He's actually not a Square-Enix employee, for the record, but he's done a lot of work with them.
Really, the part about the poor music guy as the office noob really made my day. Behind all the etiquette, the Japanese can still be pretty funny.
WELL, the hype does make sense now.
I see it now.
Ganon comes down from above and pierces Zelda with his blade.
You heard it hear first.
that wasnt necessary
what a waste of paper for such a talented person
Without taking a thing away from this as an interesting announcement, I will say it has zero effect on my interest in the game in either direction. This is just like the ornamental flowers on top of the icing that is the SSBB cake.
It sucks that this game is the last in the series.
Ahahahahahahaha. Damn, I honestly could have lived without knowing this because I don't like Nojima at all, IMHO, the script writer for FF9 whipped his emo fangirl ass all over the place.
I believe that even with this unsettling news, it will deliver a good game.
@superradjoe: Sorry, you seem to have lost your way, this thread isn't about Halo
@Truepatriot: @Saint Anima (PSN = PoeticMassacre): Damn, you both beat me to the obvious "Aeris dying allusion" joke.
I hope you all know that this un-arguably means the delay is because Nintendo is putting Cloud into the game. He's got as much personality as Mario, right?
@themunk:
That part really had me laughing as well. Poor Sakai-san. XD
Somewhere in Subspace Emissary's storyline...
Dark Link stabs Peach in the back.
Peach: OOoooh Mama mia...
Silence.
Mario breaks the silence: Thank you so much for to playing my game.
It'll be classic, just watch :)
GUYS leave the fan-fiction for the professionals, some of these comments are painful
Yes I know that fact is intentional
No it doesn't make them any less painful to read
Isn't that cute. : )
@Shindokie (PSN and XBL):
Kinda sounded like Lord of the Flies to me... [shrugs] Could be wrong, though.
Who wants to buy my Wii?
@Shindokie (PSN and XBL): Lord of the Flies unless I'm mistaken.
@BPM4: Guns of the Idiots: You're right. Here's a cookie. =)
@Fitz Rhapsody:
Mario: [...]
Cloud: [...]
I actually want to know where this bus idea would have lead...
The first thing that popped into my head was a Nintendo/Magic School Bus mashup, except with lasers and fighting. In Space.
Do want.
@Sinfjotle: @BPM4: Guns of the Idiots: THere we go. I couldnt read that book. It bored me to death but i had to and finished it. Good stuff though.
@KM91: Why do you think this game is the last one?...
Its a fighting game. It could be written by Shakespeare and it wouldn't add to it in the least.
Wow, they really ripped into poor Sakai-san.
@UltimatePancakeSensation: Nah, he's talking about the mindset. Because they made this game with the mindset that it would be the last game, they went all out. It's like what they say "Always aim for the heavens, so even if you fall you'll end up in a sea of stars".
And just to set the record straight, it was co-written. The FF7 writer didn't do everything himself. Sakurai even mentioned that he rejected his other script because it didn't fit his vision.
"Intense, however, was made mostly for the curious, and Very Hard can be considered the highest level of play for standard playing purposes."
Oh boy, this should be interesting.
Whats next? Spielberg directing a porn?
@Truepatriot: they can't die. they just go into trophy form. Good as new when you hit that start button.
Which reminds me--forget the Subspace Emissary, the latest issue of EGM had a far better story idea for Brawl. Who here's seen the end-of-issue comic?
@Foxstar Sixtail: Dude, it's NOT the last - it's the last Sakurai is doing. You should do more research :)
Couldn't Snake just blow up the two buses from afar? Talk about a short story.
@Shindokie (PSN and XBL): You didn't miss anything. They lost me when they used Piggy's glasses to start a fire. Piggy is (was) myopic.
@cybereality: What will they carve out of the potatoes?
@tme2nsb: I never said it was the last Smash Brothers.
:3 Heeeeee... Wow. Just... wow. That's great.
@cybereality: I'd watch it, but only if it featured tentacles.
No, I'm not Japanese.
And yes, I was just kidding. About both statements. Including the Spielberg part.
