Good news and bad news from the retail front. The recently released and uncharacteristically edgy Advance Wars: Days of Ruin is sold out at at least one Target store, which is a good thing for sales. The bad news? Target is suggesting to unsuspecting gamers—or God forbid, their parents, friends and loved ones—that an acceptable substitution for the game is the Game Boy Advance version of High School Musical. Proof that Target is run by sadists.
Reader William was there to capture the tragedy, for this we thank him.

God help those unfortunate parents when they get home.
How come the picture is called walmart_days_of_ruin.jpg then? Oh the confusion...
I'm going down to my local Target to make sure they're not pulling something this terrible.
Ohh that hurts so bad XD...
That's pretty much like considering Water Closet a good substitute for Super Mario World.
Good God that's scary.
Did they hurt themselves making that leap in logic?
"Parents lynched over crappy game by their children; blame Target"
3...2...1...
@brello:
Hmm I wonder if it is Walmart? The blue is more their color, while my Target is filled with redd.
Either way, this is horrific
Internet purchases win again!
I bet newsgroups aren't sold out.
Oh yea! Can't wait to play Zac Efron!
..
im pretty sure thats walmart
...what the hell?
@ssjmichael:
Just want to update and say that I googled "instant update" and it's a Target thing.
I think that's from Walmart.
@ssjmichael:
dammit! I meant instant substitute
Why? Wouldn't they suggest a similar game, or were they trying to rid of surplus stock?
@ssjmichael: I can believe it coming from a place that only sells censored CDs.
Thats actually funny, lighten up.
I have to agree with everyone else that it looks more like a Walmart tag than a Target. Regardless, I feel bad for anyone who receives a GBA version of High School Musical because of that. And why the heck are they suggesting a GBA game if a person was looking for a DS game?
good thing no one buys games at Target...do they?
Hilarious.
Target does tend to have some good deals, and they are a much cleaner establishment than Wal-Mart...
@Erwin211: getting rid of unsold products sounds about right. I really hope that no parent makes the mistake of thinking that it is an actual good substitute for AW
@DefHamsterJam: Nope. That's the Target signage style. Don't let my image naming flub fool you.
Are Gameboy Advance games still $29.99?
Advance Wars or High School Musical. Hmmm, decisions... decisions, but Zac Efron... he's so dreamy!
High school F-in' Musical!! Are you F-in' seriouse!
Hmmm, they could have done worse, what with Barbie's Horse Adventure a vew spots down, lol.
@mr_dimsum and Trowble (XBL/PSN):
I don't even KNOW who Zac Efron is... Clearly you two know more about this subject than I do...
Apparently the game is a "Target Exclusive" [www.amazon.com]
Too funny
That's inhuman!!!
a few FYIs:
This was done at just by someone at that particular store, not all stores.
First off, you are given an options of a raincheck, or a substitute.
Second, for video games (and DVDs and CDs), they shouldn't be making substitutes, and just giving rainchecks.
and third, they shouldn't even have to give rainchecks in the first place as the item wasn't even on sale, just advertised for regular price.
Pretty much is is just one stupid person know knowing how to do their job, and just blindly following the prompts on their computer.
I kinda just threw up in my mouth a little.
Probably just done by some Target employees who thought it'd be funny. I know I would.
ololololol
Kotaku.com is currently unavailable. We suggest you visit the production blog of Uwe Boll's upcoming blockbuster "The Life And Times Of Jack Thompson" instead. Enjoy.
i've seem GAMES/EB suggest to parents to buy dolphin and pony riding thing ds games as good substitutes when asked by a desperate parent "I need a popular game from my kids Gameboy NDS!"
sometimes i have to shoot some of them sale staff.
>_<
Well Nintendo is super casual now...
@Onizuka-GTO:
Sadly to say... Those are the popular games now =(
D:
I don't know how... nevermind. I'm in shock. D:
So Evil!!! At least substitute a similar bad Nintendo DS game; not last generation?!?!?
Wow some store employes have a really cruel sense of humor. Out of curiosity, does High school Musical even worth $29.99? Sounds like someone just trying to get rid of a crappy game and make some extra cash.
The terrorists (at Target) won...
makes me feel sympathetic for the poor kids whose parents actually bought that shit instead.
The saddest thing about that is The price listed for AW: Days of Ruin is the normal price for it. They make it sound like it is on sale, which is the only thing that bugs me.
I can't be only one that saw that picture when the page loaded and thought it said "An Instant Prostitute" can i?
@mattgs:
I would get the movie as long as I can edit it and post the new clips on youtube
ha!. sad yet funny
That makes me want to tear my eyes out.
High School Musical hell no. making costumers buy something they did not want in the first place. how about target giving us discount 30% off games instead of this lame substitute.
I still can't believe super mario 3 for gba is still $29.99 it should be 15 or 9 bucks for an old nes game.
All nitendo games should 19.99 including very old ones from 2 or 3 years ago not 29.99 for mario kart or smash bros part 2.
Sorry, we are sold out of Mass Effect XBox 360.
Suitable substitute: Bible Adventures NES ^_^.
just about the only thing those two share in common is the word "Advance" c__C
(the gamestop i frequent was charging 34.99 for AW:DoR, luckily, another local game store that i go to had the 29.99 pricetag)
Can I exchange that for Hannah Montana posters?
wait what?
Last time I had a good 'deal' where they didn't have a game and made a substitute was: They ran out of Spider-man for the NDS that was price at 15 and...gave Rayman Rabbid Rabbits (first one) for the wii, yeah not the NDS version, but the Wii version. Needless to say I bought the game at 15 and don't regret it xP
Now on this particular deal...um...no thank you, call me when they make a college edition of this Musical thing that clearly must have a section of cheerleaders doing there strech excersises. I swear I learn like 7 new positions watching them do there strech exersises before starting there training. Use your imagination to think what the positions are for (I am sure it won't be that hard to figure it out)
Well, it could be worse...

We are sold out of:

Hahah... C'moooon... even non-gamers should
