Confession: when I'm not writing about gadgets and games, I'm at least a little obsessed with food: eating it, reading about it and occasionally making it. Needless to say, I'm a huge fan of flippant ex-chef-gone-writer Anthony Bourdain and his excellent travel show No Reservations.
So imagine my surprise when two of the greatest things in the world—food and video games—fused into one during Bourdain's visit to Vancouver and he showed up at the set of infamous filmmaker Uwe Boll. Bourdain actually participated in shooting a short cameo in FarCry that will appear during what I'm betting are the best 4 seconds of the film. So what's it like to work with Boll? Watch the clip.
Oh, and for those interested, Bourdain also visits the illustrious EA Vancouver campus as well in the episode, so it's worth giving it a good DVRing...but I do hope he keeps actually eating food every once in a while for my vicarious salivation.

JESUS CHRIST GIANT PICTURE IS GIANT
@Manjikengo: Uwe Boll is striking back!
"Hey free underwear!"
The only perk working under Uwe Boll.
The picture is a little disturbing.
Didn't know I needed to get an extra screen to view that amazing picture
"Yeah something like...whatever."
Excellent direction there Uwe.
This man talent has been squandered by the evil Hollywood empire that have crushed this mans dynamic vision, and stunning creativity. I am appalled and take great umbrage with the hecklers who continue, to nip at this mans heal after he has turned out so many opus's for you filthy masses!
OK, OK, you got me this guys a tool…God if you can hear me please stop Uwe Boll kplzthnxbye.
Bourdain is totally awesome. I couldn't believe it when Boll showed up on his show. What a talentless hack (Boll, of course). I also couldn't believe how swank the EA campus was. Damn, I need to get a job there.
@BLiNk: I know I did. Uwe Boll wallpaper is awesome.
@Hauler: yeah i gotta agree with that, it seems a little lacking in directorial vision
on the upside, anthony bourdain is great, hilarious and has an awesome tv show, and i do really want to read kitchen confidential, and i'm with you there mark, i love the cooking and the eating
@Hauler: Yeah, and at the begining describing a character, he said "you know, and egomaniac, or something, yah".
No wonder his movies suck, I can imagine the poor crew directed by this mook, "yah, you need to see something, and he then does whatever...ready action, ok that was aful but if we stitch the three camera shots together it will get me an oscar, yah"
Okay. So is it "you," "oo-ee," or "oo-vay" Boll? I doubt I can trust anything that calls him an "auteur" anyway.
Man did you guys see the EA Vancouver campus in this episode? Drool. If I didn't know how EA worked their employees, I'd almost move out there and try to find a software job that pays better than here on the east coast... I love Bourdain's show in general as well..
Picture is hueg liek xbox.
the best 4 seconds in a uwe boll movie ever.
"Egoistic," and "Whatever."
That about sums it up.
wow that clip was pretty lackluster and Bourdain should have had better direction considering he's never done a movie before.
first he got shot but there's a big delay where the squib explodes and he reacts. Then he gets up too fast and they don't even get him a new coat and reshoot so it looked at least halfway decent.
The final scene made me laugh like a mad man
I think its the fact that he cant speak english that great that why his movies suck. Since no one knows what the fuck he is saying. Plus he never eared his money the real way a movie maker does with the german tax break thing.
Where is Handsome Tom Stutering Craig?
Bourdain was a customer at the video store I managed in NYC. While he was still a chef, he was also a fiction writer with a similar style to Elmore Leonard before Kitchen Confidential came out.
He was a really nice guy (he signed a copy of my book which was sadly stolen later) but so soft spoken and seemingly shy that we were all shocked when we saw his show.
I couldn't be happier for his success!
The making of Bloodrayne: "So yah, zen you get naked and like, yeah like zat, vatevar"
this is by far one of the best series on television.
i was surprised this post didn't happen sooner, but i also suppose that few gamers watch the travel channel. i mean, aside from this show, i don't make a habit of it, either.
How come Uwe isnt dead yet? His movies are crap.
Arrggh! I missed this episode hopefully it will rerun next monday. No Reservations is great television!
Nothing like seeing Anthony Bourdain eating street food in another country or eating something that is spicy.. Having a cigarette and crapping the food out in the next shot..
NOOOOOOOOOOO RESERVATIOONNSS!!
No reservations is definitely one of my favorite shows on television, even more so when he doesn't like the food since he won't hide it.
WOW, with those sorta directions I could be a director too except I probably wouldn't make such shitty movies.
I'm a HUGE fan of Anthony Bourdain as well.
Uwe Boll... not so much.
"or Vhatever"
Such conviction! No wonder he elicited such a stirring performance from Mr. Bourdain. And the stock sound-effect scream? Brilliant!
Honestly, I'm surprised it actually ended up looking like he did get hit by a high-impact projectile. However, knowing Boll he'll probably let the scene run too long and will cut to the next scene a split-second after Bourdain starts getting up (anyone who suffered through Alone in the Dark knows exactly what I'm talking about)...
No fucking way.
I love Anthony Bourdain, but this news is just totally surreal (in a bad way).
Hopefully though, that four second clip might just be as badass as the episode of No Reservations when Jackie Chan's stunt team choreographed a fight scene with him.
But it still won't save Uwe's track record! Please go die, sir.
Yah..somessing, like...vhateva.
*clap* *clap* *clap*
im going to see this one, but not as an uwe boll movie, but as a movie WITH anthony bourdain!
oh, the EA plaza... the memories...
Uh... he called Uwe Boll an auteur.
omsweetjeebus... Well, I knew uwe is a BAD director, but.... please....... PLEASE! ''something like.... yeah, whatever... let's shoot it'' ? I've got three questions now:
1) c'mon... Whatever? is he so poorly interested in making movies that he just shoot the first thing that cross in front of the cameras? (Hey, time is money, just film that, we'll work it)
2) what did we ever do to him?
3) .... seriously, ''whatever''? WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU!?
@bluecell: That really says it all right there. That was by far my favorite part.
@gstatty: He has another non-fiction companion book that went along with his Food Network show, and has a few fiction books out too. All worth the read. Kitchen Confidential is a must read.
@mindinrewind: You've gotta read between the lines a bit.
i saw this Monday night and wondered how long it would take to make it on to Kotaku. I too thought the EA campus looked flippin sweet BUT then remembered how they're EA and all of that was nicety PR speak for the men with cameras.
still... love Bourdain and that show. was pleased to see the gaming connection.
ScrewAttack also traveled up North to be filmed for a part in the movie back in the Summer. Now there are 2 good reasons to see the movie. Still waiting for a theater release of Postal though?!
YAY, OOVIE BOWL!
tony bourdain is a god.
Bourdain. ROCKS.
Boll. SUCKS.
So this is another one of those Boll.... whatever.
Did you see how fast John Carver was moving that you couldn't even see it??.
He dodged a 50 caliber shooting at full auto about 15 feet from him.
Its like he co-exists in reality and spatial time..
Woah...
I saw the program on Monday, from the looks of it, it appeared that Bourdain's appearance wasn't meant to actually be in the movie, hence no reshoots. It was to play around and get a bit of publicity for the upcoming movie. If he is in the finished film, it still wouldn't be enough to make me pay to see it. EA put more work to create his character in Fifa Street 3, so that would be a cool unlockable, but with age and past smoking, his stats would be poor.
I ♥ No Reservations!!!
You mean "TiVO-ing." I TiVo'd this particular episode, and it was pretty cool. First time Ive heard of the FarCry movie. Go Bourdain!
so he goes from being a sucky chef to doing a sucky show and now being in a ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE MOVIE???!?!?!? NICE JOB!!!!!!
Also in this case I don't think it was a good thing to have food with video games!!!!! I'm GOING TO VOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome! I watch No Reservations all the time and fortunately have this episode on my DVR (haven't watched it yet, but I think I will tonight after reading this.) I'm not too thrilled about Uwe Boll, though seeing Bordain get shot was fun... and whatever, but I can't wait to see the EA campus.
Sooo... I wonder what goes through a movie producers head when Uwe Boll walks in and wants to pitch him a movie.
"Ahh, it's mr Boll. Wonder what kind of shitcore he has up his sleeve now. Let's give him a few million dollars."
Or if the studio/producer is looking for a director for a film project:
"Damn David Fincher, Martin Scorsese, Qentin Tarantino and those are great, but hey, let's get Uwe!!"
Yeah.
Still going to see Far Cry if I can. Atleast I enjoyed the game.
