When GTA IV was delayed last year, neither investors nor gamers were happy. And many of us pointed the finger at the PS3 for the reported "technical" problems during Rockstar's joint PS3/Xbox 360 development process. According to Rockstar's VP of Product Development Jeronimo Barrera, we weren't so crazy.
It's really no surprise to anybody that the PS3 was definitely a contributing factor to [the delay].He continues:
Now, we're neck and neck. That's not an issue anymore. But back then that was something we were taking into account. That's not to say there's anything wrong with the PS3 version. It's awesome. They're both identical.Oh, I'm sure that the internet will find something wrong with the PS3 version and something wrong with the 360 version. But it's good to hear that both versions of the game are on track now.

Oh boy, this thread wont go well.
First it was disc space for the 360, now it is an unknown (tougher learning curve?) for the PS3.
Nice!
So Rockstar can't code good enough for PS3 right?
Isn't this a regurgitation from an article from last year?
Ru oh *Runs before flame war starts*

(Says something bad about Microsoft)
(Says something bad about Sony)
(Says something bad about Rockstar)
That's it. Can we go home now?
ya, Rockstar are a bunch of amatuer coders!! teh cell is so powerfuls!!
Launch in 3, 2, 1...
MGS4 ON 360 CONFURMED!!11
i dont care what anyone says my chips are still on the delay was to hold out for more system sales.
"Oh, I'm sure that the internet will find something wrong with the PS3 version and something wrong with the 360 version."
Coming soon to a Kotaku comment section near you...
Well if they are neck and neck there really isn't anything to worry about, right? Right. ;)
Curses, this doesn't help me decide ><
360 - Means I have to pay for more xbox live time but I get to play with some friends I won't be able to if I get for PS3, however i'm scared i'll RROD my 360 from playing GTA too much.
PS3 - I prefer playing on the PS3 and it means i don't have to pay to play online, also means I won't brick my 360, however this means i can't play with non-ps3owning-friends
/sigh
@Fareo: I'll take that bet. If you are right, then Rockstar defrauded their investors. Not... not a good business strategy.
Chances are if they had problems with the PS3 version, it won't turn out to be the "best" version. So I canceled my PS3 preorder and changed it to the 360 version of the special edition.
Bastard PS3 making my game take longer to come out. Why didnt they make it easier to make games for and cost less to produce games for it. That would definately make it a must buy system. I would buy one if it had more than a handfull of games I would play.
@dashyt2dafulliz:
No Rockstar is having a hard time coding on unnecessary proprietary architecture which does the same thing a more streamlined, established architecture can do.
The cell is a lie.
@The Dark Defender: with that philosophy its "confurmed" for the nintendo 64 as well
Insomniac release 1 game per year in ps3 ....
and they are amazing.
I think it all depends on how much the devs want to learn something new...
It seems less fanboy flamewars and more the fear of said war than anything else.
Odd...
@EnigmaNemesis:
Memory amount and architecture specifically.
If the PS3 is the reason for delays then I thank the PS3 for doing so. The second and third trailers looked horrible for GTA IV, so I would almost bet money that the game would have not been so great on any system had it come out last October.
After seeing the pics on IGN yesterday I am excited again and pleased to see that the GTA IV we will get is the GTA IV tha the fans deserve.
@DigitalHero: ur an idiot, the ps3 version of burnout paradise was a lot better then the 360 version, so why should the ps3 version be worse? also the issue of the orange box on ps3 is going to be fixed via patch
Good things take time.
Kinda like a filet mignon (PS3) next to a Big Mac (360). Except most fanboys love Big Macs and can't afford the finer tastes.
At least I tell myself that.
@matizzy:What's with the name calling? To each his own, you know.
called it.
Months ago when gta got delayed, I told EVERYONE it was due to the lack of experience with the ps3.
@matizzy: PS3 version of Burnout was the lead, supposedly. This was not.
TEH PS3 IS TEH SUX4OrZ.
@The Konamunist: I totally second that. The PS3 delay probably helped GTA4 from avoiding the pitfall of being a lame duck.
The trailers and framerate were sub-par through and through.
All impressions seems very different now. Six months really made a huge difference.
teh lies stop teh lies!!!
whatever. it's on track now. and i'm getting it.
i can smell the hateraide now......
So, if the two versions are identical, I guess we're not counting the DLC or whatever it was MS paid 50 Million for?
I've harped on this before, but imagine a world where the PS3 just launched last month or the month before, at its current $400-500 price point instead of 5-600. Damn that would have been awesome for the platform.
@matizzy: How so was burnout paradise PS3 better than 360?
Btw, test drive unlimited is better >.>;
The problem with the PS3 has classically been programming for the OS. The PS2 was known as the hardest to program for out of all four in the last generation. SONY isn't known for making developer friendly products. That being said, the 360 gets a big boost in that it is easy for games to jump directly from the PC to the 360 (naturally, since it IS Microsoft), so the development time for the 360 will be less because it's easier for them while they're doing it on the computer. It takes more time for the PS3.
@DigitalHero: Perhaps you missed the article at least a year ago when Rockstar was saying they were having problems with the 360 version due to its smaller capacity?
I think if you combine the two you shouldn't buy the game at all! Clearly it'll be awful on both systems!
Clearly it was UT3 engine's fault.
@matizzy: What was the problem with the 360 version of Burnout Paradise? Looks and plays fine to me.
Someone convince me this game is going to be worth all this. I just can't imagine slogging through another 50 hours of hookers and drugs and pointless shooting. I played the others a little, and I played Saints Row and I'm just bored of it all.
GTA has always been a bit behind in targeting, in graphics, in most things.
Yay it's coming out, but should anyone care? Convince someone who plays FPS/Puzzle/RPG genres primarily that I should care.
Both versions will inevitably suck in comparision to the PC version.
Plus, if anything, it was only a "contributing factor". Does that mean there were other factors? Maybe.
Eh, no one should care anyway. It's coming soon. Flame when both versions are on a comparison video in the not so distant future.
*limp wrist wave*
Psshaw! This is soooooo 2007, girlfriend.
...Oh wait, this post wasn't THAT kind of flamebait? Damn...
@balls187: wow. awesome!
@symphony_of_the_night: Learn something new that you can't use anywhere else? Companies must be jumping at that idea.....
@Tyber_Zann:
.........Thats really stupid. Filet Mignon is tiny as shit. I'd prefer a rack of ribs.
I can afford to buy a ps3, I chose not to.
(citing no gamez lolololo. I told my sisters boyfriend too. and now everytime i see him come into gamestop he always looks really sad when he leaves the ps3 wall empty handed.)
I picked up a 830 dollar pc over a ps3 60 gb system.
"Get down!!"
Yep, it's gonna get ugly up in this muthafukka!
*walks Out*
Is it getting hot in here?
...UrgAHHHHH!
*Bursts into flames*
@Manjikengo:
Wow, you and how many other million people said that one!
PS3 most likely was not the lead platform, which has lead to problems in the past, and will most likely lead to some in the future. If they say that they are running identically, good. I'm probably going to get it on 360 if this exclulsive episodic content is worth it. Otherwise, i actually prefer the ps3 controller for everything but FPS... but i've been playing COD4 on PS3 and the controller has been great anyway (though i do want a dual shock 3).
*Runs back*
I have to say though that if this came out last year, then I would agree it was the year for gamers. Also I guess this will be the first GTA game I'll own (I played the other ones at friends/family)
@matizzy: *Slap* Don't ever do that again >:(
@Tyber_Zann: lol nice :)
to add that, Big Mac is a junk food, you eat that everyday, you'll get heath issues in the future. In this care, dare I to say.. RRoD?
spare me from the 360 wrath lol..
A GameTrailers comparison is virtually inevitable.
Glad to hear of their progress, though.
