Despite yesterdays excellent rumor smash performed by our sister site Gizmodo, it seems like the doomed Gizmondo handheld is destined to return to the market, thanks to the efforts of UK electronics design firm Plextek. Eurogamer spoke this morning with Plextek's technical director Ian Murphy, who confirmed the rumored resurrection.
"There are a few things to do, and it will be a while before that happens," Murphy continued. "But yes, the product has been recovered from the liquidators and we are bringing it back to market."Murphy contends that the only reason the Gizmondo failed in the first place was an overall failure to get the product to market - a failure they plan to rectify later this year. While most of the Gizmondo folks - including convicted criminal and car abuser Stefan Eriksson - will not be attached to the project, former Gizmondo Europe chairman Carl Freer is fully on board. All I can say is that now is the perfect time to reintroduce another handheld to the market, what with how much the PSP and DS are struggling...oh wait.
Gizmondo is coming back - it's official [Eurogamer]

I thought it failed in the first place because the company was a front for organized crime.
Swish
OH YES THIS IS AMAZING NEWS!
Please keep the execs away from Enzos!
Wait... I thought the Gizmondo BS was a complete scam in the first place, and every single executives were in on it. The only innocent ones were the tech guys? Wired did an article on this, the part about the scandal was really explicit.
Oh thank God.
I feel like I'm the only person in the world who thought some of the ideas in gizmondo were really good. Like the catapult game that used the camera to make it seem like it was happening for real.
Gizmondo? Hmmm..
Wasn't Mondo some sort of sugar-water 'juice' that ran along with the likes of Squeeze-its and Kool Aid Koolers? So.. then the prefix 'Giz' means...?
we have been there done that good bye gizmondo you are the weakest link...
That handheld looks uglier than a DS *shudders*
I dont care what they do, just DONT FUCKING CRASH ANY OTHER HIGHLY RARE CARS.
Gizmondo is a joke, of course. But I think it is actually a great time to introduce another handheld to the market. Think about it this way, the DS is huge and proves that handhelds CAN sell as well as any under television console. The market is ripe for handhelds. If you include things like iPods, mobile phones, and smartphones, you see that the US market is very receptive towards these smaller gadgets. If Gizmondo is for real, it can carve itself a niche.
Too bad its not for real.
Gizmondo has mad street cred after their new/old CEO got back in town. (he self-deported back to Sweeden). The Uppsala Mob is back in the game...
@Witzbold:
Yeah, I'm thinking I might need one of those 'Save The Enzo's' t-shirts if this turns out to be true.
@ampillion : Will comment for money.: Oh please don't say that. you're destroying all of our childhoods lol
Oh wow a "rumor unsmash." Kotaku first?
There does seem to be a need for a new handheld. It is not like the market is saturated or something.
I wish people would just piss that money into my bank account if they are going to piss it into the toilet.
Whew....glad to know...I'll keep my normal routine of ignoring them in place.
Rumor unsmash. HAH! Love the tag.
Duel analog sticks. Without them, First person shooters on handhelds suck. The PSP is the perfect example of convoluted control schemes to try and get a single analog stick to work. Gizmondo fails for this reason. There's not even a touch screen like the DS has.
This just reeks of stupidity. I'd gladly accept their investment in the Gizmondo and save them the trouble of loosing all that money once again.
Carl Freer not affiliated with Stefan Eriksson anymore? How so?
"Police raided Eriksson's Bel-Air home and on April 8, 2006. Eriksson, preparing to leave the US, was arrested on suspicion of embezzlement, grand theft auto, drunken driving, cocaine possession, and weapons charges stemming from a Magnum handgun encountered during the search. He initially faced up to 14 years in prison, which was later reduced in a plea bargain. In May, misdemeanor hit and run and driving without a California license and insurance were added in relation to a Porsche Cayenne allegedly driven by Eriksson rear-ending an SUV near his Bel-Air home on January fourth.[11]
On April 26th, Eriksson's accomplice Carl Freer was arrested on suspicion of impersonating a police officer, perjury, and other unspecified charges stemming from the discovery of 12 rifles and four handguns during searches of his estate and his 100-foot yacht docked at Marina del Rey.[12]
On May 9th, police raided the San Gabriel Valley Transit Authority (a car body shop), arresting its owner and confiscating guns, badges, and a vehicle equipped to be an unmarked police car.[13]"
Good now all it needs is a sequel to Momma Can I Mow The Lawn? and Sticky Balls so it will dominate the DS and PSP.
I'll tell you one thing, the Gizmondo had a lovely rubbery feel! Apart from that, mmm, didn't really have much going for it....

You know for the longest time I thought Gizmodo.com was GizMONdo.com and as such was a clever take on the failed gadget.
Live and learn right?
@tidus9000: Oh, you're not alone. Those augmented reality games were great (or at least, very innovative). Catapult seemed to work very well and looked fun, Agaju wasn't that great (movement detection was a little off) but it was a first. Colors also could have been good (was it even leaked?).
So yeah, it's a shame that it was a company run by a criminal and not Sony or Nintendo who decided to innovate this way (sorry but IMHO a touch screen is nothing compared to this).
@MR_COATES: yes but it didn't fit very well in... uh, ok, maybe I should stop right there...
@Gen16Snes: lmao
Finally i can buy something to level out that coffee table in my living room! please dont put out a hit on me... im just stating my thoughts:)
What in the Mc fuck is that on the screen?
Since it kinda looks like a freaked out Rayman.
Yah know what, I'd buy it!
...Who the hell is Plextek?
@Witzbold:
It IS Rayman.
@ampillion : Will comment for money.: Holy crap, I totally forgot about that stuff. I used to drink it all the time as a kid... lousy parents.
It seems that since it's so hard to get new brand names out there, people would rather just resurrect a dead one. Even one that had such bad press.
Thank GOD you finally referenced "Gizmodo" (the site) with "Gizmondo" (the fucked-up video game company) in one single article. I was starting to lose my mind figuring out which was which.
SPAAAAACCEEEE TAAAAAAAACCOOOOO!!!!!!!!!1!
Gizmondo Rising Again In 2008? I give a fuck, says me
This ain't gonna go down well.
@mizzle: The market is NOT ready for another handheld. All the things you listed like iPods, smart phones, and cell phones everyone already has, and Gizmondo would just be upgrading the games and using the same old features... if this is even real.
Fools and their money...
I actually have a Gizmondo and a few games for it (Trailblazer is the only one that doesn't really suck). It was a nice system, it just didn't have any support, even from its own company. It just needed games.
Colors had potential, and I was psyched for a portable version of Alien Hominid on its pretty screen. But the real crime in this whole sad story is that "Momma Can I Mow the Lawn" never saw the light of day.
i don't understand why keeping the same name when it failed once
I like the original name, Gametrac, only slightly better. What I do like is the design of the hardware, especially the nVidia GPU. Technically, it blows away the DS, but without a touchscreen, and has better graphics in many ways than the PSP, but without the widescreen. I hope it works out for them, I kinda wanted one before.
I would kill for this system. KILL!
