Double Fine Productions founder and funny man Tim Schafer isn't so much a fan of Naughty Dog's Uncharted: Drake's Fortune as he is the next-gen thermal shirt that protagonist Nathan Drake wears throughout. The Psychonauts creator compares the PlayStation 3 title's heretofore ignored technological marvel that is a casually dirty, half-tucked shirt to "an unfinished symphony." He heaps praise upon the adventure game's clothing choices and lauds a poly-cotton top that speaks volumes about its wearer.
He writes of Drake's shirt "Jet skiing, swimming, and almost kissing—nothing can dislodge or fully tuck Drake's half-casual shirt. It is draped in a purgatory state, half in, half out, never completely free." A bold and fascinating analysis from a visionary mind that anyone who has even a passing interest in video game fashion should read. Compelling stuff.
Half-tuck is the new Mullett [Double Fine]

...what?
erm...ok
Love it... *runs to Target to stock up on hanes beefy-t's*
I can't tell if he's being sarcastic or not...
Tim Schafer is a weird dude...brilliant...but weeeird
err...that was absolutely random.
Ah, I miss Tim. My childhood hero. I used to work for his Double Fine crew for Psychonauts. Best people. Unfortunately, I had other writing opportunities and that was that.
I hope there's some half-tucked shirts for the PS3 edition of Brutal Legend. ;)
@ultimatepancakesensation:
the whole part about drake jet skiing and his shirt not coming untucked didn't give it away?
Best. Story. Ever.
...this may have made my day.
Tim Schafer could write anything and I would think it was brilliant.
"Yes, the shirt was dirty, like he had partied in it all night, passed out, threw up on himself repeatedly in his sleep, and was then left in a ditch outside of town by his mean friends. And by the time he walked home his shirt was dry, so he just said, "The hell with it. Let's go find some treasure.""
I laughed in real life at that bit.
Tim Schafer: genius
well it's kinda like james bond and his hair. after an intense race and battle through the city streets, his hair is indeed never shaken nor stirred.
Wow, that is a tad anal.
so...he loves..A shirt?
Ahaha! Tim is great. Can't wait to get my hands on Brutal Legend. Hopefully Double Fine will be able to get back to Psychonauts someday.
Oh I get it! Wait...nope, lost it, what the hells he talking about again?
"The half-tuck reassures the ladies that you're a man who cares about personal grooming, but who, at the same time, couldn't give a f##k. Who doesn't like that?"
No lady I know, sir. Not with a belt like that, anyway.
you guys are easily impressed (and you throw around the word "genius" far too easily.
Tim Schafer Mystified By Link's Cap Tech
Double Fine Productions founder and funny man Tim Schafer isn't so much a fan of Nintendo's Legend of Zelda as he is the next-gen thermal cap that protagonist Link wears throughout. The Psychonauts creator compares the Wii title's heretofore ignored technological marvel that is a casually dirty, half-tucked hood to "an unfinished symphony." He heaps praise upon the adventure game's clothing choices and lauds a poly-cotton top that speaks volumes about its wearer.
He writes of Link's shirt "snowboarding, swimming, and almost kissing--nothing can dislodge or fully tuck Link's half-casual hood. It is draped in a purgatory state, half in, half out, never completely free." A bold and fascinating analysis from a visionary mind that anyone who has even a passing interest in video game fashion should read. Compelling stuff.
I've done the half-tucked shirt thing before Drake. I'm a visionary too.
He's nuts and I love it.
Off topic, but why is there a "What My Friends Are Up To" tag right under this story to remind me that I don't have any friends? I feel lonely.
@ortholomeux: You sir, are a genius.
I think that blog was quite funny :)
Of course, the question foremost in my mind was always, "Who the hell wears jeans and a long-sleeve shirt on a tropical island?"
I like Tim Schafer and all, but I don't see how this kind of thing makes people say, "Tim Schaferz = GENIUS!!".
Nathan Drake totally pulled off the "carefully dishevelled" look.
the same reason why Hulk's pants never quite rip all the way eventhough his shirts are always destroyed...
@Bakeroo:
if Indy wears leather jacket and khaki pants in middle of jungle, i'm sure anyone can wear long-sleeve shirt and jeans in middle of tropical island...
@icepick314:
No kidding Icepick, LOL.
@NeverSage: Well played, sir.
@icepick314: The khaki pants are plausible, the leather jacket, not so much.
Haha, awesome.
Uncharted is not an adventure game. It is an action game. Get it right or pay the price!
FINALLY! someone notice it!! the cloth render is something hard to do in the pre-render enviroment, I was surprised to see the job of cloth render in real-time in Uncharted. I told of the cloth render to a friend in Uncharted but he didn't believe me until he saw it (we both works for an architectural company and manage to do some renders)an he was like WTF? when he saw the flow of the clothwork on drake.
Is amazing that almost no one notice this, and it's more because I never saw in any system the cloth render in real time.
Yes, it was kinda "uh?" the point over Drake's shirt but it was more important to notice how well ND worked on the dirt over the cloth, the wet, the movement over the polygon work.
I was more amized by the way clothing in the game reacts to water, and how consevativly everyone is dressed. In an age of muscle bound supermen and scantly clad sex goddesses, the cast of Uncharted were well dressed, and actualy something like your average Joe or Jane. It was refreshing to see that in a game.
Deep in the jungle safe from the sun you'll find it feels a bit cool actually.
Drake's shirt stays tucked by the same mystical force that keeps people from buying and playing Psychonauts.
@Bakeroo: Shorts and a t-shirt might be fine if you're sticking to the beach, but the greater portion of any remote tropical island is thick jungle, and jeans and long sleeves are very good things if you try and push through that.
If a shirt gets wet, does it not dry?
I should have expected that from a person who made a game about head trips.
Interesting, and a way more productive use of processor power than the melting ice in Metal Gear Solid 2 because unlike the ice, the shirt stays with you the whole game. If you're going to give a cosmetic item its own physics engine, you should at least make it something that everyone will notice.
So is the shirt the new, "bloom', "brown", "blood", and soon to be "shaky cam"?
@ortholomeux:
You, sir, have obviously not played Tim Schafer's Psychonauts.
Maybe should've tagged this post "HUMOR"
I'm proud to say he signed my DS. It was even posted on his site.
I was amazed at how many people you had to kill in the game. I mean, this was no Raiders of the Lost Ark, where there's Nazis galore. They're all hired mercenaries whom you have no qualms about killing. I started questioning myself during the game thinking "how good can this treasure be, anyway?".
Oh, and Tim...I think you can only get away with the half-tucked look if you've got the slim Brad Pitt bod. But people who look like Brad Pitt can wear just about anything. People with guts look like slobs unless they're in suits.
@Bakeroo: I live in a tropical jungle and im usually in t-shirts and long jeans oO
oh btw, I love kotaku for its random blogs, but imo this is not as funny as some see, although I do have to respect their opinions of course.
lol... Tim's crazy - which is why his games are so entertaining!
...You just said a bunch of words I don't understand, don't follow the flock of comedians using long words to baffle us into laughter, it doesn't work when you write it.
dang, this article is poorly written. i had to click the referenced blog before i could understand what it's all about.
psh, i can pull off the "half slob" look WAY better
Now if only he'd make Psychonauts 2 :(
