The Japanese launch of Skype for the PSP, originally slated for late-January, has been postponed due to issues with Sony's official microphones. Apparently some of the microphone's components failed to meet Skype's necessary certifications, and rather than launch the service with no official peripherals to accommodate it, Sony have put the entire launch on ice. No new date has been set for the launch, Sony only saying "solutions to enable users to start using Skype features and services on their PSP are being sought for and will be announced in due course". Sucks for Japan! Western users, you're OK, as Sony have told us this "will make no difference to the European and USA launch, which will coincide with the end of January firmware upgrade".

Yeah I'm pretty sure this is just Sony's way of avoiding angering the hideous Japanese Cellular Phone Company Overlords.
Skype for PSP will probably never come out here :(
Well either or, I just can't let go of my main cellphone to justify for skype's service fee.
On the other hand, great emergency backup if it will use the credit service.
Hey, atleast they postpone it, not like MS and the 360.
I've got to know, seriously, how many of you are going to use your PSP for your phone.
I like my PSP and all, but I feel like Sony is starting to turn the PSP into the Ngage. Less about gaming and more about all the other BS that it can do.
"Hey, did you know you can get the internet, play MP3s, make VOIP calls, take pictures, get GPS directions, watch TV with the LocationFree player, and watch UMD movies on the PSP?"
"Oh yeah, and sometimes Sony releases some games for it too..."
@RSTStop780:
No different from all the other consoles be it DS, Wii, PS3 or 360. Why is the PSP any different?
@RSTStop780: I want music, I want movies, I want internet and I would love my PSP more if it was a real mobile, I only have so many pockets before it looks like i'm a pack rat. And I use it all for my psp, plus game.
I hope the next psp got all it has now and a mobile phone. I am satisfied with the games it got unlike what N-Gage had. Also sony ericsson mobiles are a lot better then the n-gage was as is the psp.
I doubt I'l use skype because a, I don't have the slim psp :( and I rather have a real mobile built in the to use skype.
It's been a little over two weeks since it's announcement and it's already being delayed!?! Sony are really on the ball these days, right ... right?
@JonC: I know I love my PS3 for all the multimedia capabilities it has. I also use them all, most of them anyway, pretty damn often too. And the PS3 is quality, not cheap plastic compared to similar products in a TV store.
Yay for getting inferior tech in the US and Europe!
Sony delayed a feature set? Shut up. I don't believe it! I remember when they totally made the release date for....um...oh wait. Never mind.
I'll never understand why game/console companies give specific dates because they ALL miss them constantly.
I'm extremely curious to see how this Skype is going to pan out. Loving the thought of it, but hating the thought of it being too cumbersome and inconvenient to bother with.
@RSTStop780:
Please don't be one of those idiots who thinks this interferes with game releases. Sony isn't making games. The people working on skype aren't making games. Game developers are making games. It's just idiotic dude...
I'm a quote, unquote, game brain and my latest system is the psp and that's going two years now, yea I admit I'm too cheap to dish out close to five hundred hard earn gil (dollars)for the PS3, which is still developing. I do everything with my untampered psp or at lease all the things that are aviliable to an untampered psp, I'll still waitin for that bloody GPS and the cam to add to my back pack of peripheral gadgets. I'm always promoting this handy device. I use the psp for. Showing off family pics, Instant messaging family from across the globe, convert books and notes to read on the go, hundreds of downloadable movies that I convert for myself. Hours music and of course my favourite games with no comparision portable graphics, any way I'll shutup for now..
I want to buy a PSP but am not sure if I should get the Japanese or US version (as I currently live in Japan but go to the US regularly.) If I buy the GPS for the Japanese version, will it work in the US?
The games I want are available on both versions. I know Skype is only available in the US version.
What other pros and cons should I consider?
