Running around in the dark chopping up tables looks booooooring. We know, the real game will have bad guys, but for now, this trailer, it's booooooooring. All except for that inventory system, actually: finally, a game where an actual objective is to reach into your pants in first-person, in real-time.

That inventory thing does look neat. I love how quickly he picks up stuff from the floor too, haha.
The Japanese have beaten them on that one. There are many games where you reach into your pants whilst playing. (In real time)
Wow, Resident Evil 4... I mean, Alone In The Dark 5 has some decent graphics.
I actually thought it looked pretty fun.
And I don't really see the point in every game needing to crawl with an unrealistic number of "badguys" to dispatch.
Whats wrong with the gamplay elements of interacting with your environment to solve well disguised environmental puzzles to advance?
I think a selling point of the game is how anything can be set aflame...good enough for me.
It looks pretty cool. Interesting music, too.
I think this trailer looks pretty awesome. I had passed this off before, but if it keeps impressing me as much as this trailer has, I'll be putting money down for it most certainly.
Looks amazing. It was just an interactivity video, but it was great. I'll be following this more closely from here on out.
Looks cool to me, wish there was a Wii version coming. Oh well. That invent system does look quite nifty.
@Mommar: You know that AitD predates the RE francise by a few years, right? Granted, back then, it took place in the 1920s, but still.
Looks quite interesting to me, not boring at all.
I like games that do create a hostile atmosphere without actually sending a ton of hostile enemies/creatures at you.
Don' think much can go wrong if they keep the direction of the trailer, but thats my personal opinion ...
Also everytime i read about Alone In The Dark it reminds me of that terrible movie from Uwe Boll, the game wont end that way , will it ?
On a sidenote, will this be for PC ?
Great fire physics
@sadkermit: hey asshole - why don't you check first? It is coming to the Wii and PS2 - announced back in November.
Cool. Just have to wait to see that version now, which does not have a release date either.
This is definitely the right path Atari needs to take to get back on their feet. Pretty good graphics mixed with interesting gameplay elements (setting things on fire, the inventory system, pick up almost anything as a weapon) made me instantly look forward to this game. If Atari can give me the same feeling I got from the old Alone in the Dark games when I was a kid, as well as these great new elements, and REALLY make me jump sometimes (sorry Doom 3 dark corners), this game will be excellent.
@sadkermit: Are you... arguing with yourself on a public forum?
That dude was alone in the dark!
It kind of reminded me of Dead Rising or Resident Evil without any of the zombies. Or Myst with annoying backward messages being shouted out by some cyber-choir. I'll be buying this one for sure.
@Raynre: LMFAO
@Zenian: haha, I noticed that, too. I especially liked how you can set the entire axe on fire, handle and all, with no apparent consequence. Too awesome.
Wow, that was an amazing trailer. The amount of interactivity was really interesting. Dousing stuff with oil and setting it on fire, flaming weapons, ability to knock stuff down that looks like it should fall down. Wonder how effective a table really is as a shield? Does a table shield work better when on fire or not?
Screw enemies, give me more environment!
Hey, this does look really good. Environments you can actually play in, and an inventory that actually makes sense. Plus, it looks fantastic. There are a lot of great little touches here and there to make it feel more alive.
@DON! KING!: PS3 only? *bumm-cha-diss*
Impressive! Lots of pick up and play stuff.
All puzzles can be solved with FIRE!
Looks like they have a physics engine, including that realistic breaking, and highly interactive environments. It's a start, and from the looks of it will be a great horror game if they get a good story going. But, alas it's not for me, I'd probably piss my pants the first time the silhouette of a monster projects itself around the corner of a staircase.
In which way was that boring? The interactivity looked very impressive. If it plays as good as it looks like it will, I will quite satisfied.
I love the Kotaku headlines :D
Yeh more of a tech demo trailer than anything else
The gas-trail explosion on the car sold me.
The mystique of this series was always like this. Much like Silent Hill... the darkness, the sound effects, not knowing what can be around the corner. It is supposed to present a psychological thrill being set up this way. Where your mind wanders more often than not.
I was very impressed by that trailer, what was so boring about it? Just because there weren't many shots of enemies? The interaction looked pretty fun, i liked when he shot down the sword and picked it up. The fire looks great as well.
Alone In The Dark should hurry up and reclaim its notoriety as one of the original story-driven survival horror games ever. It's been about seven years now!
Also, I seriously hope the cover of the game doesn't retain that cheesy 'Bourne' movie poster look. So un-Alone In The Dark-ish.
I am actually quite excited about the mechanics being demonstrated in this trailer... very excited :) !!
@Raynre: oh my street cred! :P
Took a look at the Wii / PS2 version - Wii version looks like it's just a port of the PS2 version. *acts shocked* Looks a bit rough, but hey - it's horror and on the Wii, and not a rails shooter. So I'm in.
Check it out if you're a Wii or PS2 owner (IOW - you don't own a next-gen console)

@DelDeadeyes: I apologize - sevenTEEN years!
Didn't look too shabby, that inventory system definitely seemed like the best part of it. Eeeenteresting!
I like it when he swings the axe in the beginning for no apparent reason- adds to the serious mood of the game. Kudos :)
I actually hope that it isn't overrun with enemies -- Alone in the Dark was inspired by Lovecraft, so it should have more of a creeping fear that grows. Walking around creepy environments where something you can't see is stalking you is much scarier that fighting off hundreds of monsters.
Hm... Not too shabby. I was beginning to wonder if there were any monsters/enemies in this game. Music was also kinda weird... what they heck was she saying? And in what language?
@jayntampa: agreed. but the player was swinging his axe at nothing so it kinda gave the wrong impressions. only scary part was the shadow but that's been done a bajillion times.
Wow! Finally a game where you can just break through the cheap wooden door and not need some stupid red key. What innovations will they think of next?
I wish there were some bad guys in this trailer for me to kill. I know! I'll cut up this table with an axe! hahaha *smash crush bang*
...
*sigh* It just isn't the same thing...
Wow, and here I thought Alone In The Dark was a thing of the past. Looks like the franchise that inspired Resident Evil is the one being inspired by it, with of course a few new tricks to show off. I'll keep on top of this one, looks impressive.
I'm actually really looking forward to this game now. I hope they don't screw it up...
I thought that last shot look pretty badass: some creepy...thing...bounding along the wreckage, clearly going for the kill (namely you) while you saunter nonchalantly towards it. Bring it on.
No no no, they had me right up until .. Oh noes! Driving sequence, games rarely if ever get them right. I can look past it like that absurd bouncing tedious car of Mass Effect if the story is half as good as Mass Effects.
That actually looks pretty goddamn cool. I love the level of interaction with the environment, and it's damn pretty.
@Krytha: There were at least five enemies in that trailer. These games aren't supposed to be kill-fests.
I think it looks awesome. I love the atmosphere, and the emphasis on exploration and interaction with the environment.
It looks like I'm going to love it for a lot of the same reasons I love Penumbra Overture. [penumbra-overture.com]
Oh, and the inventory system is the best I've ever seen. Perfect for this kind of game, totally immersive.
@Bal-Cleric: Ironically, the developer Eden Games are known mostly for their driving games (V-Rally, Test Drive Unlimited, Need for Speed); So if any sequence in Alone In The Dark should be done right, it's the driving sequences. That is of course, If Eden Games actually do good driving games.
A little slow of a trailer. It definatley showed a good amount of ways to interact with what looked like everything. By far the best fucking inventory screen I have ever seen.
Don't know why but the music sounded Myst-ish.
Looks like an interesting enough engine. Might want to check this out when there's actually stuff to do...
It isn't that boring >.> The trailer I think was made to show the graphics, physics and how can you set anything on fire (liked that). Looks good to me n.n
Very cool. If they can wrap it all up into a semi-polished final product, I'll be happy.
I miss the greatness of the first AITD trilogy.
This looked, seemed, ehm, it is "okey" I guess. Some nice elements but I'm not impressed, far from it, also considering how long it has been in development for, announced earlier then the 360, or same day :P
Hmm, I like the feel a bit, physics seemed very nice but... I don't know. I'm split in 2 on this game after this trailer, atleast a bit more optimistic then before the trailer, as they were to quiet for too long. I will have to demo this first or see some "real" gameplay trailers before I care about it though.
He totally 'OWNS' those inanimate objects - they don't stand a chance against him!
Looks potenitally nice and I'm keeping fingers crossed for this one. Even though I never liked the first Alone in the Dark's as the controls had me lumbering around like a retard who liked the feel of walls on his forehead.
I get what they were trying to do with the cliche music but it just came across sounding 'meh' and uninspired.
Whatever little excitement I started with was further lost given the way he just turns casually away from the beam on fire that JUST NARROWLY SWEEPS PAST HIM AND ALMOST TURNS HIM INTO THE HUMAN FUCKING TORCH!
Oh yeh, and as was said, the way he doesn't care much for some strange creature jumping towards him THAT OBVIOUSLY WANTS TO MAKE HAPPY BALLOONS OUT OF HIS BLOODY ENTRAILS!
Character movement looked awkward sideways - RE4 just got away without a decent strafe but you cannot!
Inventory looks cools but I was half expecting it stop midway so he could equip his crotch.
