This is cool and well done, but when will people get over the companion cube? The weighted companion cube and THE CAKE IS LIKE HURR were hardly the most entertaining bits of the game. Why have people attached to them so? Can we stop now?

Saw this on digg. Very sexy. All these game related (mainly Portal) crafts / mods make me think I should do stuff like this myself. They seem to be going for a fair price on Ebay.

@ara: Actually, just whipped out a ruler and to 20cm cube, you could fit almost four Mac Minis on top of each other. And they would have some room to move around. Scary.

I can think of at least a half dozen games whose fans are just as obsessive as Portal's that are actually not very good games ;)

@DaiMacculate: Like Kingdom Hearts? Well, to be honest, they are pretty fun. But not anywhere close to deserving the blind fan love they get. Especially when people make theories and stuff for the storyline when we all know that KH2's plot didn't ACTUALLY make any sense.

I really like portal, and this mod is great, but I burned the hell out of that cube the second I had the chance.

Blah blah blah. Cool case mod and everything (as I think anyone who does case mods deserves some credit) but this is hardly the greatest thing since sliced bread. I just think gamers really needed something new to latch on to, and severely beat into the ground and this is what they chose. I guess I should be grateful that it wasn't anything I found to be even remotely interesting.

@Sparx88: You make it sound like it's a disease or something, geez! It's just a fun fad/mini-obsession that we humor each other in until the next big thing (like MGS4).

I still refuse to purchase one of the plush companion cubes. Even if they weren't sold out. Buying a sphere plush-thing with sewn-on corners is not the Weighted Companion Primitive that I want to own.

Now, if they manage to produce one made out of that wonderful polyvinyl chloride (PVC), like many figures and whatnot are made (see Kidrobot for some excellent examples) I would buy one like that.

Holy crap, that's so awesome I feel all funny inside.

I'd like a spherical mod that looks like one of GlaDOS' processor cores. Put that on gimbals and I'd be even more impressed.

im gonna agree with the minority here. portal was a good game, but seriously, the companion cube/cake stuff is getting kinda old.

now i shall sit back and wait for disagreements. all of which i will be too lazy to read :P

F the haters. Nobody's forcing you to read Kotaku, and certainly nobody's forcing you to post negative comments. If you're bored, great. Go be bored elsewhere. Meanwhile those of us who like gamer culture will enjoy the mod.

@BABERG: Rule number one for those that just wish to stir trouble is to ignore them and at times they make it very very hard to ignore them I understand that. But giving them attention gives them more encouragement to continue on with what they are doing.

That said, this PC mod is awesome! I am one of the few that have not played portal but have listened to the song a whole lot and it always makes me smile. I do not get the obsession with most of the things(except the song) but it is still great to see creative mods like this done.

I never really understood the Companion Cube mania, but that is a fantastic case mod.

Its going to overheat from what I can see...
