Huh, last time I flew into Kansai International Airport, the only thing that was welcoming us foreigners was a finger-printing machine. KIX kicked off a campaign where cosplayers greet foreigner tourists with photo opportunities. Compared to Akihabara, there is less cosplaying and few maids in Den-Den Town. But the person in charge of the campaign remarked:
I want to promote Osaka's otakus.
Oh, okay. Photo opps with cosplayers at the airport? This is so nerdom's version of the Hawaiian lei ceremony.
True story: The first time I flew into KIX, I was greeted by a mob of photographers and TV cameras. Which weren't for me, but famed Hanshin Tigers slugger Randy Bass. Dude sat behind me in business class all the way from DFW. Slept the entire time.

I would like this, very much =(
Awesome. My girlfriend works at Kan-kuu. Hah, I'll ask her about this. I'll look for the cosplayers next time I'm there... hahah. I don't think my lady would be very happy if I was getting my picture taken with a bunch of skimpily dressed maid girls though.
My imouto is landing @ Kansai Airport on March, better keep this away from her before she tries and out-cosplay them ^^;;
@Nullzero: The maid outfits in the photo aren't really too skimpy. I mean, there's a few inches of leg, but that's it. Not that your girlfriend might not object anyway...
Meanwhile, is that Rei? Not terribly convincing.
Overall though, sounds like a fun concept. (Here's an idea, could they just get the maids to take your fingerprints too? 'Please put your finger here, Master... NO NOT THERE! ON THE PAD!')
I certainly hope it's optional though because the last thing I would want when struggling off a plane after a 10 hour international flight is to be accosted by a bunch of maid cosplayers :) I'd probably die of embarrassment...
Damn, and I only got to Osaka by night bus. No cosplayers at the station. They should change that!
Did they mistake you for Randy Bass?
This is a god damn gaming blog. What the fuck does this have to do with gaming? Ashcraft's posts keep getting more asinine with every passing day.
It's a gamign culture blog. This falls under that category if you ask me. I also find Ashcraft's posts some of the most interesting on the site.
@Nick The Newbie:
Uwaa, I think you missed the "otaku" part in "Kotaku".
@LeFishy: You probably also wish you were japanese and plan to get the surgery to make your eyes look more asian.
It's possible to have a blog that focuses on gaming and gaming culture, and not jack off japan every 3rd post. Mr. ashcraft doesn't seem to realize that.
NICK THE NEWBIE, your username says it all.
omg just another reason to go argh damn you expensive place tickets damn you.
Can I take them home?
I'll introduce them to Kotaku fish.
What the hell is wrong with me this morning.
I want some Fruit Loops.
:-(
@Nick The Newbie: If you don't like reading posts about anime/otakus/Japan/etc., then don't. If you come here just for gaming news, then there are a lot of posts that deal with that subject matter.
That's the wonder of blogs; you can pick what you want to see.
Ban NICK THE NEWBIE for not appreciating japan, in particular hot looking cosplayers.
@Nick The Newbie:
Yep. it is possible. But guess what? This isn't that blog...so you can go look up news about games elsewhere.
Don't get me wrong. Kotaku's a great blog with a constant stream of awesome news. Updates more than any other one out there. It's just a shame whenever the stream of awesome is broken with BS news like this. I don't know why the posts are actually labeled as by "Brian Ashcraft" and not from the "Random japan trivia and idolmaster ticker"
Shorter Nick:
Ban me
@Nick The Newbie: I actually come to Kotaku for the "Ashcraft" posts and random japanese/asian news. It's something different from the 'normal' North American market. Japan tends to do far cooler promo's for games and the game market. Kinda like LARPers with less lightning bolts and no fat chicks.
I just read up on Randy Bass and the Colonel Sanders story is hilarious.
I just read Randy Bass bio on wiki.
The Colonel Sanders curse...lol
Hot greetings of shame!
When I arrived at Kansai Airport we were greeted by hordes of Japanese elementary school children, asked us a couple of questions in English (it was part of their English lessons ;p) and they gave us self-made origami and a card as a thank-you ;p.

p.s. Nick The Newbie: oh please, c'mon. Great posts like these are part of the Kotaku identity (hey, what do you get if you remove the 'K' from Kotaku?). Go read Joystiq or something if you don't like it.
@Nick The Newbie:
I see you're not a fan of Danny Choo's site, nor this one.
The last time I landed in the Narita airport, I was greeted by very grumpy customs officers. they didn't even smile one bit, but that's okay.
Furthermore, I like how if this was an entry about gaming in Zimbabwe, the overwhelming response would be:
one (1) comment
:tumbleweed:
Ohhh shoooot Ashcraft rolling in business class with the playas.
@Nick The Newbie: All your post is asking for is a ban.
Almost makes you wanna get off the plane in costume.
@Kanashimi: No, it's asking for from decent god damn journalism from someone who is in a good place to get it.
Sorry kanashimi, that was directed at the post above you, not you.
Personally I'd run straight back on the plane.
@Nick The Newbie: Have you read the name of the blog? It's Kotaku. You know what an otaku is, don't you?
If you don't like posts about Japan (or as you call them, "BS news") then skip to the next gaming related post and restrain your word. If you survive the next "Ban Monday", that is.
Nick, obsessive gamers (in the tag right under KOTAKU at the top of your page!) are nerds. Did you know Japan has nerds too? They are called otaku.
What does cosplaying have to do with nerds and gaming? A lot of the characters these nice girls are dressing up as are famous characters from anime/manga as well as video games!
I am almost certainly sure that you do not like BAshcraft's posts about maid cafes. However, the reason maid cafes have come into existance is because of a video game!
Hopefully you have become a bit more educated on this subject and also more open minded about it. :3
@Nick The Newbie:
GREAT COMMENT BUDDY.
@Brian Ashcraft:
troll troll, your momma is a troll
@SquirtGun: please don't ban me
@SquirtGun:
please don't ban me
I miss the red X over the profile for all banned people. :(
@DELICIOUS_BUNNY: You're kidding, right? A post about gaming in Zimbabwe would be pretty interesting. (And surprising - have they still got enough electricity to run a game console and TV? Never mind that maybe trying to find food / escape to South Africa might be a higher priority.)
