Yeah, the Halo movie's on a long, unpaid vacation, but that doesn't mean Peter Jackson's WETA special effects studio have been sitting on their collective asses. They've already made a bunch of weapons and props for the film, and with the project doing naught but gathering dust, they figured they may as well send some over to Bungie, let them have a go. Here, you can see the results. Sure, Master Chief is handy with a pistol, but could he ever rock a sweater like that? No. No he could not.
Bungie Weekly Update 01/18/08 [Bungie]

Comments
Luke Smith's looking a lot... cleaner since he moved to Bungie. Or has that pic been airbrushed?
I was going to come in here and make my own comment about Luke's snappy dressing, but OH MY GOD that brute spike grenade is HUGE. 0_0
Sweet props; I wonder if any of them will become available for purchase overtime.
Get 'em Luke Smith, GET 'EM.
Kane and Lynch at bungie studio?
I like the disdain in their faces for the first photo. Like they have to go bust into a police station and rescue a witness. Angryest ever person in a sweater-shirt combo.
Let me be the first to offer WETA props to their props.
thats a big bowl of awsome
Is that top photo an outtake from Hot Fuzz?
Bottom pic looks like a picture from a GWAR concert.
Ha sweet. They put up the pic with me and the spike grenade. Awesome.
@HykCraft: You are a terrifying creature and I salute you.
@Brian Ashcraft: Do you still keep in touch with Luke? I've been curious lately how he feels about Bungie leaving the MS fold. It kinda seemed to me that he got his dream opportunity to go work on his favorite game franchise just in time to have the company not work on that franchise anymore.
I imagine Bungie is doing something equally cool, as they always do... just curious what Luke's take on the whole "freedom" bit would be. I can imagine the rest of the Bungie staff being a bit burnt out on Halo... but can imagine a bit of disappointment for Luke.
At least he gets to handle the guns.
@second picture: EPIC COCKSLAP!!!
Man, WETA is awesome.
Please tell me they're going to add a built-in microphone on those Halo 3 weapons, so you can scream at your opposing team and then leave.
@dv8godd:
Haven't talked to him since he and the other Kotaku dudes got their asses kicked in Halo 3. But occasionally we still talk. He's good people!
Dude's totally keen to make games, good games. Haven't talked to him about the whole MS dealio. We usually talk about, you know, girls and stuff.
DO WANT!
Especially that handgun, loved that weapon in Halo : CE.
@Brian Ashcraft: That's cool. I can completely understand the desire to avoid shop-talk with former colleagues.
It's a good opportunity, though I do miss his charming self on the journalist side of things both here and the 1up podcasts.
Man, I have always said that Luke Smith's voice and how he looks do not go together. Nothing negative, his voice just reminds me of a hippy kind of guy.
I like the one with the security guard holding the hammer and the caption says, "No you can't has recon." Is it just me or has Frankie gained some weight?
2D side-scroller/brawler with Bungie staff members digitized Mortal Kombat style using these weapons=DO WANT.
I want that handgun, I don't care if it fires nerf darts or nothing at all it looks BOSS.
Why we get Missile Launcher CD cases and not this stuff for Halo promotional merchandise I'll never understand.
never did like the look of the pistol..just me?
it's like using an engine from a Lada and put it in a Ferrari
like if i would ever care to own such thing
@Scum2k1: Just you. God I love that little gun...
@Scum2k1: Not just you. It is bulbous like a gun-tumor.
christ, the Bungie site has crashed my browser twice.
[snicker]
Good to see the prop guns are where they are appreciated.
The second pic makes me think of dirty jokes >.< lol
My money would be on Luke "The Scarab Lord" Smith in that fight. Pistol FTW.
I'd like to see Master Chief like, sitting at home watching Tv, eating a TV dinner in that sweater, but with all his armor on underneath, like the Storm Troopers in Family Guy when Peter's gears are grinded over not being able to find the droids he's looking for.
LOL! Luke looks like the next Jason Bourne.
Looks like some one at bungie found themself a penis enhancement
@BadByte: Grow up.
But anyways, it's good to see that someone is working on something that awesome. Too bad this movie will never, ever be made. But hey, props are fun too...right?
The problem with that spiked club is the urge you'll feel of smashing someone's head with it...
Luke looks remarkably like a heavier version of Brad Pitt's character in Se7en.
Is that lukems with the pistol? Looks like he's been buying a lot of steak dinners... for himself.
"Lukems" was by no means emaciated when he worked at 1up.com (which now feels like it happened at some point when Netscape was the browser of choice), but that picture makes him look like he might have put on "the freshman fifteen" since joining Bungie. I'm sure 'playtesting opportunities' had nothing to do with that.
Either way, that's all irrelevant to the fact that his presence does nothing for Bungie's lame podcast, and as it turns out, his absence on "1up Yours" doesn't diminish its quality NEARLY as much as I thought it would. Somehow, whoever else is on for a given week more than compensates for Garnett's borderline intolerable ineptitude and forced contrarian posturing. But the 'classic' foursome is still missed here.
Patiently waiting for your return to a job that allows you to once again 'keep it real', Luke. I figure you'll be about due for a move around this time next year.
Why is the spiky end of that hammer so close to his crotch?!
The guy in the top photo to the left is a dead ringer for Michael Chiklis. GO THING!
I love real like Griffball picture xD
Those pictures are just brilliant!
I wonder if they got the shotgun made too?
ROFL!! These pics are made of win.
Aw man, I want that Battle Rifle.
Looks like it would be kind of tough to keep two of those spike grenages in your back pocket.
@Pombar:
Halo 3 shipped. Thats why Luke is looking cleaner, I know I was there.
Some of the pics are just pure gold. Thumbs up to the Nade comparison.
The grenade isn't huge, that man is tiny.
making fake toys based off a terrible video game!? I just don't get it....
@piratecaptain:
You know I am actually extremely surprised that it took this long for a troll show up.
Is it just me or do those props look like total ass? After LOTR I thought WETA could do no wrong, but I am now clearly mistaken. Granted, I'm sure these are far from the final props that will be used in the moview, but that armor looks similar to a LaserTag helmet and vest I donned back in the 80s.
Yeah - we got a few trolls on this pirate ship - interestingly enough none of them play Halo..... boo that game.
@Kdawg: It's just you.
Hmm, one thing that gets me. They don't look as amazing as they could do, but lets face it they're movie props and after all the computer touch ups and CGI they'll look awesome.
i just hope they actually start selling the replicas eventually, i mean who wouldn't want to a bank being held up on the news, only to find out the bankrobbers were using battle rifles and M7 Subachine guns?
One of these days Frankie will get a tan...
Well... probably not.
The second pic is very interesting. He's ready to let that big one go...
