I got a chance to check out an early build of the Penny Arcade Game when I was at PAX last year and really enjoyed it. The character customization was fun and the use of the old school turn based gameplay was a clever throwback to many of the games I loved as a kid. Now we have some new gameplay videos featuring a new comic book style interface at the bottom which replaces the more steampunk style one that I saw. Truth be told, I liked the old version of the interface more, but this one looks seviceable and certainly blends well with the cut scenes of the game which are also done in the same comic book style. I look forward to the game's release especially since it is one of a very few interesting titles that I can play on my Mac without having to switch to my Windows partition. Make the jump for two more clips.

Sarcasm finally takes videogame form!
YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!
Hmm...
I am getting a fruit fucker prime tattoo on my arm when I get back from Japan... wheeeeeeeeeeee
Feh.
Cannot wait. This game looks amazing.
P.S. Love you, Flynn.
The little microgames for some attacks are interesting, but I'm definitely glad they only seem to be used sparingly.
Honestly, though, the gameplay for this one only has to manage to not suck. For me the writing is going to be the real deciding factor on whether it's a winner or not.
Hmm. This actually looks pretty good. Who'd have thought a webcomic would spawn a game?
@InsomniaBob: PvP's next, as a fighter, mark my words.
im intrigued, cause of my love for PA. still no word on a release date/demo? this could be fun.
Gaarggghhhh. I thought this would be a point and click adventure, and it's showing be turn based japano-RPG mechanics with Quick Time Events. Those mechanics are rarely fun and quickly become a grind, let's hope that their writing is funny and witty enough to compensate for this.
Sam and Max could really do with some competition on the point and click front, I've only the free Abe Lincoln episode, but it was an empty facsimile of a proper adventure.
Looks fun, I especially like how Tycho is reading a book constantly, and tosses it away to shoot his Tommy, before catching it again. Nice touch.
Does the game have the Fruitfucker as a usuable character/attack? It might sell me on it if so.
I loved the mime's "I'm throwing a boulder at you!" move.
I'm probably going to buy out of devotion, but man does that interface look cluttered. Guess they didn't get the "diminished HUD" memo going around.
I'm have to have a good new game with graphics that my old PC can handle! :D
Too bad this is not going for the Wii.. the interface and game mechanics are perfect for the system.. :/
Looks fun. I'll probably pick it up. Games like this need a good story to drive you though the turn-based play.
Mimes exploding into a bloody mess? Dreams do come true.
I've been absolutely in love with the game ever since a trailer spat the line "Read lots and lots of TEXT!" Gotta love the underlying *and if you don't like it, screw off.* which is inherent to that line.
Penny Arcade is actually funny & clever. Unlike other comics. (I'm looking at you, ctrl+alt+del). So, I have no doubt that this game will be just the same.
Now you've done it, here comes the flame war.
There is something about this that makes me laugh with evil glee...
@hahnchen:
japano-RPG? I thought PA's "Roll for Initiative" and turn-based gameplay was derived from old school tabletop games. D&D?
It looks pretty fun. I just wished that the visuals would be a little more dramatic when the special moves occurred.
@Nex Antonius:
Dear God man, what have you done? Here come the CAD loyal morons to rip your heart out.
And mine.
fag....
My most anticipated game for the first quarter of the year. If only because it's the only game that I don't know exactly what to expect from.
@KaneRobot: If by "Feh" you mean to express your negative view on this game, then I agree.
Feh.
initially, i really didn't care about this, it sounded kind of lame. but it actually looks like a lot of fun to play.
Hmmm...While I'm still stoked for the game, showing 5 minutes of RPG combat is boring.
You have to be one messed up individual to watch other people play RPG's.
I mean, it's one thing to sit there and watch yourself not do much, but when you're watching others, it reaches a new apex of boring.
But it does look fun to play.
@BD: CAD generally is a low-brow comic, but it's occasionally good for a cheap laugh.
@Nex Antonius: haha, i somehow knew the CNTRL+ALT+DEL bashing wasnt far off.
i second your notion, by the way. shit's unfunny, when you compare it to PA, VG cats and the like.
And still no VG cats game *sigh* I'm going to play CoD4
@acti.: ...was that necessary?
@BD: I keep hearing that, but where is this CAD cult? one follower/fan's on my own forum, but ive never seen them foaming at the mouth or any of what i've heard here.
@TheIrishNinja (PSN), IrishNinja2099 (XBL): @Mechapixel: I love Dr. Hobo. Greatest character ever. I love him so much, I mention him at least once a day, either online or in real life.
Dr. Hobo Fo' Life.

Saddest moment of my life.
@TheIrishNinja (PSN), IrishNinja2099 (XBL):
They're around. I've SEEN some of them. And I had to wash out my eyes. With razor blades. To scrape the photons off lest they be burned in my memory for too long and make me insane.
Maybe the blades didn't work after all.
Looks quite a bit like Gladius. Which is a good thing I suppose.
Is this PC only? I like the way it's shaping up. Reminded me of Shadow Hearts.
Turn-based combat? Never been a big fan of that...
@ocha: I believe it's PC, and DLC on Ps3 and 360.
It *might* not come to the Ps3, but I doubt it.
People like VGCats?
/using my opinion as fact that everyone should follow
@BD:
urgh, CAD is the third party wii game of webcomics. I refuse to believe that there are fans of it out there. Just as I refuse to believe that there are more than two x-men and (modern) spider-man movies.
Ahh, sweet sweet bubble of good taste, oh how I love thy rose-tinted view onto life.
@Len Bias Cocaine Surplus: aw man, i adore VG cats. if you know of better game webcomics, im all ears.
@weirdwolf: boy, its almost a shame they never made sequels to the original Matrix, eh? its uncanny.
not defending CAD, but it's not as if PA is always funny, in fact some times it's just down right esoteric. almost laborious to read a 3 panel comic. at least tycho has reigned himself in over the years, or maybe he hasn't. idk.
@TheIrishNinja (PSN), IrishNinja2099 (XBL): I like VGCats. It's just a shame that he almost never makes a damn comic any more.

@Kirbytheslayer: The Movie: so you'd rather watch 5 minutes of pre-rendered "btw-this-has-nothing-to-do-with-the-actual-game" video
they're just showing what the fighting will be like, timed button presses alongside classic turn based.
This will be free I hope.
Looks almost as boring as the comic.
@Gantz: Your Trusted Friend in Science.: You can sum up the combat by showing the mini-game thingys, and then 30 seconds(assuming you know nothing about RPG's), and have people understand.
They should've shown dialogue or something.
Because that's what I'll be playing the game for.
CAD is decent. When it connects its really funny, but when it misses it misses badly.
Back on topic though, when I first heard about a PA game I was amused because I thought it was all a big joke they were pulling on us. Hey, I bet some of you thought the same things at first. But as more and more details started coming around I began to get really excited. But these videos have actually cooled my interests slightly. Of course, the writing will always be the most important part of a PA game so I will wait and see before passing final judgement.
Turn based menu combat. Looks like "fun".
I am so excited for this game. Few games actually have a good sense of humor. Portal had some pretty good laughs in it, but I expect this game to raise the bar.
As for CAD, the jokes are rarely funny, the art is atrocious and you can find out all you need to know about Tim Buckley by googling "Romicide."
Man i feel like an asshole criticising this game because a) I haven't bloody played it and b) i really like Penny arcade comics, as well as what those guys are doing for gaming as a whole.
This footage though.. I dunno, i guess there's some kind of joke to the turn based combat, but i've hated that kind of JRPG combat since forever (yes, roll for initiative is a d&d joke, no, this is not d&d combat), and like a movie whose one joke is that the entire film is jam packed with the most obvious clichès imaginable, in the end it's just another clichèed movie.
For turn based combat to really sit tight with me it needs to be very tactical stuff indeed, and i loathe the "ok everybody get in line for FIGHTING!" style of JRPGs, where the only real tactical choice is wether to take damage or dish it out.
To me Penny Arcade was a nobrainer for a point and click adventure; what this is is another universe like the ones inhabited by the cardboard tube samurai or twisp & catsby, ONLY it's got a mashup of every character they've done somewhere in there, which to me kind of disconnects the whole fabric of the thing.
Maybe they nail it, i dunno. I just think the combat, in spite of occationally funny words (BIG TEXT), looks like somewhat of a one-trick pony. I hope that's not all there is.
@Kirbytheslayer: The Movie: Becuase when I click play on a Gametrailers video I want to sit there and read me some words. Words, mind you, that I'll probably end up reading when I play the game. Don't get me wrong, I love reading, but when I read I want to do it in the proper resolution and at my own pace, not in some tiny window played by a GT jackhole.
Maybe I'm not as big a PA fan as I thought,but who's the bald guy?
@kidnicky: That's your character. You design him at the beginning.
@kidnicky:
Your custom made character.
Doh, I loathe turn based games, though I wonder whether if this game is bad it'll effect their credibility.
