Nexon is adding to its US stable of free-to-play MMOs with Mabinogi, the Celtic and Welsh-themed game which launches a closed beta on 30 January. It sounds like MMO-meets-Harvest Moon, with promises of "offering players a 'life' experience" - characters age at a set rate, can participate in mundane tasks like farming, writing music, and getting married in addition to the usual battles-and-quests. I was delighted to see faint whispers of deliciously bad press releases for Asian MMOs:
President and CEO John H. Chi commented, "Playing Mabinogi is about more than just fighting and normal MMO fare. This is a chance for gamers to live a fantasy life in a place where communities build mutual beliefs of family, friendship and hard work."
And cute sheep prominently featured on the main page. I'm a sucker for fuzzy sheep - and if they're singing fuzzy sheep, so much the better. No details yet on when the doors of Mabinogi will be thrown open for the public at large, but it looks like they're still taking applications for closed beta testers over at the Mabinogi website

There's a joke in there somewhere but I'm not sure how to extract it; there's so much potential.
mundane tasks like writing music?
I was actually going to sign up for a Japanese account to try this game out, but this works even better.
a celtic and welsh MMO?! i'm signing up right now. drunken catholic PvP wahey
@RandolphCarter: North America only :( nice way to cut out the celtic and welsh demographics
I just applied ... it looks cute and fun :)
No matter how awesome this is, it's pretty old. I remember when the countdown was 40 days. Anyways, I've been waiting for this game to come to the US for approximately 3 years. Oh, I should probably tell you guys that to make music, you have to use the Music Markup Language. That is, unless you use a web composer, such as this one: [4urworld.net]
I think that there are other client-side programs, but I can't be bothered to look for them right now. :P
PS: If you can hear sound on the composer I linked to, please tell me if you did anything special (read: not just turn the volume up) to get it to work.
Screw the gaijin masses, I've been playing it for years. LEARN MOONSPEAK.
Already applied for beta... *fingers crossed*
Bah. I've been waiting for this for ages and every time I try to submit a beta app it says there's an error. Lame. -_-
Saw this game ages ago, gave up on it 'cause of the aforementioned moonspeak. Will give it a look when the beta is open...
But will it blend?
After my run in with ms...I won't be able to trust Nexon.
Mabinogi is one of the most original and fun MMORPGs out there. I too was waiting for more information about an NA release for so long that I gave up on it and went to JP version. I've been playing there for about two years, give or take a few months.
Word to the wise, the game is extremely solo-friendly, but unlike other MMORPGs where there is tangible and engaging solo content, Mabinogi is absolutely *zero* fun solo. Conversely, grouping for dungeon runs and other quests and missions are absolute joys.
Cute enough. I wish I knew moonspeak
Nice to see that we can finally live the life of our fantasies in an MMORPG.
How delightfully coincidental, I'm currently reading an English translation of the Welsh stories called the Mabinogion, where the game gets it's title.
Pity the visual look is predictbly comic fantasy.
Oh, and can someone tell the Asians that the curved upwards tail on dogs doesn't look good, even in a lighthearted MMO?
Registered.
Waiting for approval.
this was a really great game, I had my character at level 700 (including reincarnation). I played over 2 years, until they put in all kinds of crap.
Hunting crocodiles in the amazon wearing a full plate mail, wielding a claymore, just didn't seem right.
Now just give me a claymore and face paint and I can have some fun.
Looks promising. My current gaming obsession is Rune Factory (when not playing TF2), so I'll keep an eye out for this.
The game is super stressful. Well doing the part time jobs, since it was limited to a certian number of people during a game day for a single part time job. So it was a big cluster fuck of folks rapidly clicking over and over trying to get the jobs during the day to make money
Its insane
Cute game though.
@Witzbold:
its kinda like a quote from lupe fiasco
"when a nigga's gotta eat shit gets greesy"
