A trio of supposed screen shots from an unreleased Castlevania game for the Nintendo DS have made their way online, ones that could possibly reveal Koji Igarashi and team's follow up to Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin. Are they real? They certainly look real enough, with a timestamp that would indicate a December 25, 2007 build of the game, one that would appear to feature a female protagonist and yet another "Metroid-vania" style adventure. Igarashi has gone on record as saying that Konami is working on a third Castlevania title for the DS, but we can't say for sure whether this is it.

What we do find interesting about another potential slog through Dracula's castle is the Wii menu item in the leaked title screen. What could Iga and crew have planned for Wii connectivity? Could it have something to do with the long-rumored Wii version of the venerable franchise or could WiiWare capabilities come to the DS? We can only speculate that, if these screens are real, third parties may be looking to take advantage of both machines' Wi-fi capabilities. Portrait of Ruin made good use of the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection for its online shop trading service, so we wonder if Konami has something similar planned.
It's worth noting that these alleged screens have a very different art style than the previous two titles, which had a strong anime influence, something that wasn't necessarily well received by fans. If these screens are an indication of the direction of the next game in the series, we hope it means that long time character designer Ayami Kojima has a hand in it.
Take it as rumor for now or, at the very least, some damn good fakes. Thanks, Mike!

oooh a female protagonist. maybe it's dracula's daughter. i dont know...just saying.
Is that charlotte again?
no prob
@resetbutton: Maybe hes got a "siiiisterrrr"
wow sweet character design.
Sweet. Hope those are real.
Awesome...I love the Castlevania DS series of games and from the look of the charatcer art hopefully this one wont be as cartoony as the last two.
I was gonna say "a Christmas build? It must be fake, they wouldn't be working on a holiday."
I later realized that Christmas is not a holiday in Japan.
The portable Castlevania games are some of the best games ever, but I could care less about Wii connectivity. Seems like the GBA/Gamecube crap all over again. Pointless and painful.
If this is real, nom nom nom.
They seem to have gone back to the Bishojo art style, latest used in Aria of Sorrow.
Cant for my life understand why the used such incredibly sloppy art in Dawn of Sorrow, and Portrait of Ruin wasnt exactly stellar in that area either.
Oh well, Castlevania can only be good in 2d, I will buy this for sure.
Also, it looks like that chick's name is Shanoa.
Although the previous two Castlevanias were great, I really hated the anime character designs; I prefered Ayumi Kojima's instead. This new character portrait looks somewhat different than Kojima's but it looks great none the less.
Uh, where does it say "Wii" in the menu screen? All I can make out is Wi-Fi connection under "Game Start"
@hansamurai: sort of like remote play on the psp?
@x3sphere: It's above Game Start.
SWEET
Aria of Sorrow style Castlevania on the DS? Awesome!
Aria of sorrow is my fave castlevania game... hope this takes after it!
Title is Ubawareta Kokuin, which translates as The Stolen Seal.
If this is indeed the next in the series, I'm surprised it isn't based off the 1999 Julius Battle that Iga's been teasing us with throughout the last three games.
Awesome. Maybe if this comes out it'll be the first game I buy for my DS is over a year. The last game being the previous Castlevania DS game.
Can't wait for this one. I've liked pretty much every 2d castlevania, except for Harmony of Dissonance. Only because it was too hard for me.
Sign me up. Even if it is just a video of Iga farting, if it is on a DS cart labeled as Castlevania, I will buy it.
I honestly never had a problem with the anime style of the previous 2 title(the only thing I really hated was how they drew Soma) but then I also never really had a problem with the previous styling as well, except for the fact the everyone was a pale in the face as Dracula(when I first saw Juste's portrait in HoD I swore he was a vampire) Also, keep whoever does this art away from my Simon Belmont! If I see another pale, gothic, effeminate version of him ever again oooooooh I don't even know what i'm gonna do.
Hope this is real, the other Castlevania games on the DS were great.
@The_Phiphler: I trought the old style by Kojima was "Bishonen",not bishojo(not sure about that)
Good old art design,the anime style of the 2 ds titles was not of my liking
I'm totally giddy over the possibility that Ayami Kojima is back on for the Nintendo Castlevania installments.
If this is the 3rd DS game, I've heard the next Castlevania game will be on the 360, Yes, that's what I have found, looking around the old 'web.
Awesome! Glad to see that there's going to be a new installment in this series, and I especially like the new art design. The anime crap on the previews two titles was simply no substitute for the artwork in the GBA titles and Symphony of the Night.
Ahem, "previous," not "previews." Again, I wish there were an edit button...
If real, then "Oh sweet merciful God, please be released soon!"
If fake, then "Oh harsh Master Cthulu, please MAKE THIS REAL! BEAT IGA TILL HE BLEEDS!"
I bet the art work for the game will still have that lame anime influence...
The anime style was fine, I actually quite liked it. Though it's the gameplay I play for; the unlocking is like a wet-dream for me. (though unlocking by itself is NOT something I play for - dw Gundam on 360 I will never play you again after getting 1000/1000 gs)
@Green-clad Gamer Dude: Obviously not...
just go on Wikipedia and search Soma Cruz. There's a comparison picture between the style from AoS and DoS. These shots look more like AoS, which is NOT the more contemporary anime-inspired look, but rather was drawn in the gothic style of Ayami Kojima, the 'regular' Castlevania artist, if you will.
Hell yes, the first two Castlevania DS games were awesome, so this coupled with the new 2D Metroid rumors make me a happy gamer.
And those screens look pretty damn great if they're fakes.
@meateaw:
Hey now, here's a topic for discussion. Why exactly was the anime styling of the previous 2 games thought to be lame. I'd like to know exactly why the gothic stuff is deemed better.
Igarashi did say the Castlevania team was working on a new DS game after finishing up Dracula X Chronicles. Perhaps this is it. [ds.ign.com]
Also, Ayumi Kojima's oil painted Art cannot be compared to generic Anime designs. I had no problem with the style used for the two DS games, but Kojima's work is FAR superior in my opinion. Hopefully she's back for this one.
Portrait of Ruin was fantastic. I've beaten it countless times. Even on hard with Max Level 1. And as an Axe Armor, which is ridiculously hard. And as the sisters. Damn, I had tons of fun with that game.
-_- I sent this in to the tips email like 12 hours ago or more, along with a rough translation of the title. (I came up with 'The Depredated Seal', which is basically the same as 'The Stolen Seal'.)
The second panel says, um... 'Shanoa: Starting from now the "Dominas" will prepare your body for the ritual. They will use it as a host afterwards.'
So her name is Shanoa, or something like that.
@Revenge_of_Nekojin:
So is she a new dracula candidate?
I dunno, seriously. I'm just glad to see another female lead for the first time since Castlevania: Legends. The girl in PoR doesn't count because she was part of a duo. :P
Looks rockin. But I don't see anything with Wii in the pictures.
I hope this game comes out soon, but like the other two I'm betting Nov/Dec 08.
Bring it the hell on. After the first two DS Castlevanias and Symphony of the Night on the PSP (Dracula X was ok, but the SotN port dominates, like, 89% of the game's awesome) I'm merely putty in Igarashi's hands.
As for the protagonist, she looks new, but her sprites look like Charlotte's...
At any rate, this doesn't seem to be the Julius game they alluded to in Dawn of Sorrow, which almost would annoy me if this one didn't look so awesome.
@Sailorcancer: The Wii symbol is right behind the highlighted "Game Start" if you look closely enough. It just says "Wii" in faded, gray letters.
I could never really get into the Castelvania games, so I don't know what to say about this. I will say that the anime style didn't bother me greatly, though this also looks nice.
I just recently picked up Portrait of Ruin (yeah, I'm a little late to the party, but 9 month old twins kinda set you back on the gaming). Absolutely love the game, probably my favorite in the 'series' since SOTN. Hope these screens are real.
@Scyen: Hmm, it actually seems like a mix of the anime and "old" styles... Her face seems a bit like a more refined version of the art style in DoS, but she's overall so much more detailed... I could be wrong, though.
@VipingViper: Shawnna.
o.o this looks awesome.
*drools*
Hmm, now I'm super skeptical...
Some things are looking weird to me. Although I hope I'm wrong.
picture this, Castlevania for ps360, Hi-res sprites (no 3d graphics plzzz) , online features (co-op, boss rush, leaderboards?) etc.
how awesome would that be? why do they keep making these for handhelds (answer:$$$)
Looks great, I sure hope this is real.
