Sony isn't going to let a sales drubbing from the Wii and Xbox 360 this past December get it down. The company did quite alright, by its own accord and thinks the best is yet to come, so says its NPD Group sales response. Sony points out PlayStation total hardware revenue was $714 million for the month, which is not pocket change, by any means and a figure that surpasses both Nintendo and Microsoft's hardware revenue.
Guitar Hero games are still selling better on the PlayStation 2, it says, as is Madden. We even get software info for the PlayStation 3 version of Call of Duty 4, which sold 522,000 copies to the Xbox 360's 1.47 million. Hang in there guys! Full statement after this.
PlayStation by the Numbers - December 2007
PlayStation® platforms had a great holiday season, based on NPD December 2007 sales data:
Hardware Momentum (PS3, PS2 and PSP)
* December 2007 was the biggest month for PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) since launch, with 798K hardware units sold in December; this represents an increase of 60% over December of last year. With upcoming titles like Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Devil May Cry 4, Burnout Paradise, and HAZE as well as current momentum for Blu-ray, there is a great deal of enthusiasm for the PS3 as we enter the new year.
* PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) continues to experience strong sales momentum with a new sleek design and the availability of entertainment packs. In December, 1.1 million PSP hardware units were sold; this is an 87% increase in sales over the previous month. Also, with our new partnership with Skype™ and great new games around the corner, such as God of War: Chains of Olympus, Patapon and Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, consumer excitement will only continue to grow.
* With a current library of nearly 1,500 games, the PlayStation®2 (PS2) also had an excellent month in December with hardware unit sales reaching 1.1 million units. Also, the PS2 sold more software units than any other console on the market.
* PlayStation total hardware revenue was $714 million in December; surpassing the total hardware revenue of Microsoft and Nintendo.
Software Momentum (PS3, PS2 and PSP)
* PS2 Guitar Hero III was the 3rd best-selling game this holiday season across all platforms with 2.7 million units sold from October through December. Also, the PS2 version of Guitar Hero III is the best-selling version since the launch of the title.
* PlayStation total software revenue in December was $822 million, sales nearly doubled compared to last month's sales.
* PlayStation platforms had three software titles in the top ten list across all consoles for the month of December: Guitar Hero III for PS2 sold 800K units, Madden NFL 08 for PS2 sold 655K units and Call of Duty 4 on PS3 sold 522K units.

OMFG .... ROFL
BEST PIC EVER!
David Lo Pan!!!
Lo Pan?! LOL
For the record, yes, I'm fully aware that Lo Pan is Chinese, despite Sony being a Japanese company.
* PlayStation total hardware revenue was $714 million in December; surpassing the total hardware revenue of Microsoft and Nintendo.
OMGZ, THEY SPINZ IT
WHAT! It's Lo-Pan!!!!!!! Hahahahahaha!!!!
The software ratio for CoD4, again last month, is a healthy 3:1. Not bad for the difference in install ratios. It's certainly a bump up from the dismal sales the platform saw in the middle of the year, and it can only get better from here.
Hmm. Well this isn't inacurate, but c'mon Sony. PS2 sales may give you the edge now, but you won't be able to rely on the same system for a decade. Eventually the PS3 is going to have to see second or even first place sales (MGS4's release) if Sony is going to keep trying to act "pleased".
Well, good for Sony. The PS3 is in last place again, but they didn't do badly at all. Combined with the PSP and PS2 sales, they should be sitting quite comfortably right now.
Nice.. I think this year is going to be good for 360 & PS3 owners
Love the picture!
@McWhertor:
Hahaha! It's all good. Don't they manufacture them in China anyways?
zzzzzz
Can't wait to see what you use for Nintendo's picture.
Lo Pan is cooler than the Emperor, there I said it.
@dead_red_eyes: If that's how you wanna justify it, I'm cool with that. :)
What can I say? I'm a big fan of Lo Pan.
@altgod: Its not just PS2, its also the PSP. PSP is selling pretty well as well. PS3 is the one doing poorly.
I do like how Sony just talks about their own brands, while MS is determined to smear and attack its competitors at every opportunity. It's unprofessional, and appalling.
@McWhertor: God I loved that movie.
At least now sony`s psp is gaining momentum from that slump it was in last year which is nice to see!
I wish they'd just comment on the PS3 rather than all 3 since that makes it looke a little sly (MS was sly with the sales instead of console sales thing too though). I dislike business spin.
Atleast PS3 is doing well, I originally planned to buy one but I'm just going to wait for a few years till I move in with my girlfriend and take hers (to share). I'll buy one myself if they remake FFVII but till then it's just sequel after sequel I see. Either that or stuff like home and LBP, but I hate LBP and would not talk to ANYONE on home, I'd just spend hours and hours customising my home.
Of course, that $714 million came from 3 different platforms, which is one more than Nintendo and two more than Microsoft, so take that statistic with a grain of salt.
So... if PS3 has no games, yet it managed to sell, then what happens when it gets games?
@EnigmaNemesis: XD ROFL I couldn't stop laughing. Props to kotaku for such a funny pic.
@-sigil-:
How on earth is it sly for them to mention their three systems? This is a general report of their sales, not some tailored PS3 report for nerds caring about a stinking console "war". They have three systems, they're going to talk about all three. Do you expect Nintendo to just talk about the Wii?
we'll see about this year.... PS3 will be as successful as PS2. hopefully.
I@Black-Dog-Howls: It will solve a rubix cube.
@Black-Dog-Howls:
Exactly what Sony predicted and what fanboys denied?
Few good games, plus a price drop and you've got some good results. This year should be even better with some prolific titles.
I'm still in awe that the PS2 is still selling so well, and damn close to the 360 (and more than the PS3) after 7 years.
All of this comes down to the fact that all Microsoft cares about is beating the competition, and all the rest of them care about making money.
@liquidcross:
I have to agree with you on that one.
I'm curious to see how these hardware sales go continuing on through the year. I'm not interested in seeing Sony win or Microsoft win this generation because I think that whole idea of someone winning is childish and a bad mentality for this industry. You don't see movie buffs going on about wanting Miramax to win over Paramount or whatever. It's stupid. I just want Sony to catch up with Microsoft, which it is slowly doing. I want to see both Sony and Microsoft force each other to innovate.
So all Sony needs for total domination is...a girl with green eyes?!?
@Kyle81:
Oh OK then they're fine.
No! That's just BS. The fact of the matter is that if Sony wants to avoid being this gen's Nintendo, they're going to have to boost PS3 sales. PS3. Not PS2. If you take away the PS2 numbers, which is going to happen naturally pretty soon, just like it did with the PS1 and the GBA, they won't be on top anymore (not that they are now). I'm getting a little sick of them spinning the fucking numbers.
@ssjmichael:
/agree
This console fanboying is getting out of hand. These are stock and investor worded press releases people. They are not for your forum pissing matches, and e-penis stroking. They can care less about that personally.
@Black-Dog-Howls: Me thinks It's the loyal fanbase + brand. And yah I'm surprised the PS3 is selling despite its weak exclusives. Ratchet and Uncharted aren't (unfortunetly) system sellers.
It was okey Sony... okey :)
"China is here, Mr Burton."
@Sollus:
I totally agree. My ultimate concern is for developers to see the PS3 as a console worthy of more time and thus better ports. If the PS3 can catch up to the 360, and even surpass it one day then there's absolutely no reason for major developers not to make the PS3 the lead (aside from moneyhats,etc..)
I could care less if they finish in 3rd, just as long as they get a great library of games, and equal or superior ports when compared to the 360.
They forgot to mention that they have a single PS3 title in the top 20 and it is a third party one ...
@EnigmaNemesis:
Ok, their for investors. That still doesn't change the fact that PS3 sales have to rise. Investors know this more than the fans do anyway.
@altgod: These numbers and words are for the company and investors, not a forum post on system wars.
The usage of pics on this site is simply
EPIC.
@mx5:
point?
So does this mean sony found their "Green-eyed virgin"?
@Irenicus-the one and only:
Way to reiterate Enigmanemesis.
@ssjmichael " could care less if they finish in 3rd, just as long as they get a great library of games, and equal or superior ports when compared to the 360.":
That's an oxymoron. If they stay in third no studio will waste time to do a superior to the 360 ports? Why should they do it? Just to brag about it? If the trend in sales is 3:1 like COD4 now why waste time perfecting a port, since that developer resource can be put on the next game/project already.
Since when did the comments on this site become so one sided. Everyone roots for the underdog now? Look don't get me wrong its fine to have an opinion, I guess I just missed the train when everyone became sony fanboys. I just couldn't help but notice the differences between the Microsoft NPD sales comments and this articles comments.
@altgod:
And they are rising, and FAST... this doesn't happen overnight, it was out a year after the 360, and is not $250 marketed to grandparents and people who buy ipods.
If the PS3 was sub $300, there wouldn't even be a debate here. It would be stomping mudholes in things... and sadly we know this to be true.
It will get there, there is a healthy lineup of system sellers coming. It is a great time to be a gamer.
@Witzbold: Joke jumper!
@Terrorsaur: i concur...
@Witzbold: I'm sure they could use Kim Cattrall. What else can she do during the writer's strike? :-p
I'll admit, I was hoping for a Blofeld pic. But damn, Lo Pan!
"which lo pan? the little old basketcase on wheels or the ten foot tall roadblock?"
