As rumored, a New Leisure Suit Larry game is on its way to PS3, Xbox 360 and PC. Its title? Leisure Suit Larry Box Office Bust. Get it? Yeah, there are two innuendos going on there. Featuring a story from Happy Madison Productions writer Allen Covert, and stars Dave Attell, Shannon Elizabeth, and Jeffrey Tambor (as well as some other folk), we're looking forward to gold chains making an appearance in media other than WoW commercials. Play the game this fall.
So you know, I considered writing this post in obnoxious, uber-heterosexual speak complete with cheesy pickup lines, but then I realized the concept was so similar to my normal style that, well, I cried for a few minutes. Hit the jump for the full press release.
LOS ANGELES, Jan. 17 /PRNewswire/ — Sierra Entertainment, a division of Vivendi Games, announced today that the lovable loser, Leisure Suit Larry, is back in an all new side-splitting, pants-busting adventure game, coming to Xbox 360(R) video game and entertainment system, PLAYSTATION(R)3 computer entertainment system, PC and mobile phones this fall. The Leisure Suit Larry(R) Box Office Bust video game gives gamers an all-access pass to the glitz, glamour and gorgeous women of Tinseltown. yayyy
It's my dick in a box!
First, they need to get Al Lowe in on this heet. Second, they need to drop "Larry Lovage" or whatever that joke of a character was from the last "game" and go back to the original Larry: Larry Laffer. Other than that, we'll just have to see how things go.
What? No grandma-friendly Wii release?
No Poke-tot version coming to the DS?
exciting!
waggle demands a Leisure Suit Larry. i can envision the perverted mini-games now
Whenever a game announcement press release highlights the cast more than the gameplay....
Are these "Larry" games actually any fun? They've always come across to me as a hypersexualized middle-teenage wankfestival. Am I wrong to be categorizing the Larry games right alongside The Guy Game and the Playboy Mansion game? Someone please enlighten me...
i cant wait to see THOSE achievements
Hopefully JT's licence will already have been yanked by the time this launches.
I'm actually counting up to four potential innuendos in that title, but since this is a family site I'll leave them as an exercise to the reader. :)
Jeffrey Tambor, Patrick Warburton and Artie Lange? SOLD!
I'm almost tempted to want it.
Looks like another piece-of-shit minigame collection rather than an actual game.
@Hoppasaurus: you'll find no enlightenment on this blog post, i can assure you :)
@Hoppasaurus: They're actually pretty funny sometimes. Unfortunately for Larry he almost never gets laid due to some unfortunate turn of events.
@Hoppasaurus: Which ones? The ones that came out in the past couple of years? Yeah, crap.
The ones that came out back when we didn't compare Shader Models on our graphics cards, but whether we had CGA or EGA? Yeah, those were completely awesome.
I hope it isn't a mini-game crapfest like the last title and more akin to the old Larry games.
I also agree with Geekay3, they should really bring Larry Laffer back and just diss this lame nephew...
National Lampoon needs to get the rights for this franchise and start cranking out games. Not that they'll be any good. But they'd do a good job in at least five out of ten catagories. (ie voice work, writing, timing...)
@Hoppasaurus: I suppose I should actually answer your question, but I was too impressed with my own CGA/EGA quip to do so.
The original LSL games were graphical adventure games (i.e. "LOOK GIRL", "TALK GIRL", "USE SPANISH FLY") with an over-aggrandized sense of sexual innuendo and an awesome sense of humor. Most of it centered about trying to get a gentleman who was more or less modeled after Larry on Three's Company into various women's pants. Most of the time, something goes wrong as he's about to seal the deal and hilarity ensues.
I'm not a fan of the series but, believe it or not, my MIDI Composition teacher was the music designer for the first few games. He stopped after 3 I believe due to some problems with the company.
Another guy I know, did the music from Spy Hunter (Xbox) and Freaky Flyers
Let's see what happens. But honestly...would it be so hard to include Al Lowe? It would be an AMAZING PR move and all around the right thing to do. Oh well.
Somebody help me here... Does Al Lowe not receive *anything* from this game, or the last?
Thankfully up on IGN they have a preview that reports that the developers are axing all nudity from the game.
That choice will save me some money.
It's obvious it's the right choice, i mean what better way to alienate your target audience then to remove one of it's selling points >.>
@Hoppasaurus: Basically, they're old school adventure games that draw humor from sexual foibles of a loser. At the time considered incredibly risque (80s to mid 90s), in all honesty they're not that bad, relying more on clever righting than outright raunchiness like "The Guy Game." Basically, if you've found the recent Sam and Max games fun and clever, you should give Leisure Suit Larry a try...except for Magna Cum Laud, completely unrelated. And no, Al Lowe received nothing from Magna Cum Laud.
@weasl: And of course, this leads us to a PC 'directors cut' edition to come out three months later for additional sales
@Jazhuis: @PatMan33: Aaah. Thanks for the info. I've only ever read about/ seen screens of the series, so it's nice to hear more of a first-hand perspective. Who knows? This one may very well be worth checking out. Hopefully the writing will be as good as the voice cast.
@geekay3: Yes, I loved the newer Sam & Max titles! I think I'll download the demo of this once it comes out.
IMO, the best game in the series was #6 when he went to the La Costa Lotta vacation resort.
i love the lsl games bring it on
@Killtacular: That's right. Sierra owns the rights to the character. So while Lowe does get royalties for the old games (when they're repackaged and resold), he doesn't receive anything from sales of the new games. In fact, they apparently didn't even ask him to help on Magna Cum Laude (according to allowe.com), and I doubt he will have anything to do with this game (which looks to be the same sort of lamefest that MCL was).
Without Al Lowe on the project... I will be avoiding this.
@ckranger11: Absolutely... LSL6: Shape up or Ship Out and LSL7: Love for Sail are by far the best games in the series... LSL3: Passionate Patti and the Pulsating Pectorals was also very good.
@Spoony Bard: Al Lowe no longer has a working relationship with Sierra; Vivendi/Universal basically showed him the door not long after they took over the ship. They've also refused to release the franchise rights to him (apparently he didn't even know Magna Cum Laude was in development until previews hit), much like with their some of the other *Quest franchises (Police Quest never had a single point of designer, just Jim Ball and Darryl Gates as advisors; The Two Guys From Andromeda+Josh Mandel left Sierra on extremely bad terms; The Coles took their ball and went home when Quest For Glory V started shaping up like shit; that just leaves The Williams, and they're not going to steal their own stuff).
Lowe had nothing to do with the utterly dismal version of Love For Sail on mobile phones recently, either. He's mentioned he'd love to be back on a Larry project, but he's pretty much not in the running anymore.
Remember kids, Sierra knows you don't really want adventure games!
Umm... Those consoles don't allow AO games...
They need to forget about these new Larry games and BRING BACK SPACE QUEST!!!
Pop-pop gets a Grisham?
@adamonfire: NO TOUCHING!
I think they ought to change the name slightly. "Leisure Suit Uwe: Box Office Bust."
@weasl: I honestly don't remember there being any nudity in any of the other games. Implied nudity perhaps but I don't think they ever actually showed anything. I could be wrong, I only played the first few and then 7.
Happy Madison Productions? So this game is going to be like all of the shitty Adam Sandler movies?
Grreeeaaat.....
@Skunky: Shhhhhhhhh, don't mention his name or he might get ideas about directing a Larry-based movie
@Jesse Mrozowski: There was nudity in LSL2 that I can remember but it's so tiny and pixellated it doesn't really count.
And LSL7 had nude cheats I believe
@ crescentfresh: yeah space quest. oh how do i miss the quest era. space quest was the best. i wis they did a remake point and click style. i could die after that.
@beeporama: I got something we can try, all right? It's a little risky.
@7ucky: There is no such thing as a shitty Adam Sandler movie. There are subpar movies (Longest Yard, Chuck & Larry), but "shit" is nowhere to be found.
YAY! Awsome news, lets hope it doesn't sux like the last one, which I did not bother to try, I played all other Larry and loved them all, love for sail was the best :) However, the sequel never came :(
@JeffPaine: Larry 7 had complete nude end movie if you found all dildos I think it was :)
too bad it's no AO rofl
Shouldn't the header say "on," not "to?"
... Wow, Team 17 takes an absolute low
@Linnard: Thanks for that history! I always wondered what the heck happened at Sierra, and now I know. So wait, Roberta Williams is still around? I'll hold out hope for another Phantasmagoria game. We seriously need an actually scary video game again ... it's been far too long.
they had me at Dave Attell
@adamonfire: Punch Drunk Love?
Punch Drunk Love was shit...
Al Lowe or no go, yo.
One more of those crappy Larry games full of mini games? Oh God no! I loved the Larry series with Al Lowe.. that last game made me die a little inside :(
Oh God please not another crappy Larry game full of mini games.. :(
I loved old Larry games.. but that last one made me die a little inside..
You mean "RESCUE ME"'s Artie Lange?!?!?
I'm absolutely there!
