Most of us at Kotaku (everyone minus Fahey) generally avoid MMOs like cactus barbed with Hello Kitty needles. But this new trailer of Mythos (the Flagship Studios Diabloesque MMO made by some ex-Blizzard folks) has us seriously questioning whether or not we really need lives after all, and if interactions with others—in the flesh, without the +2 Electric Boots of Courage—aren't entirely overrated.
It's a short clip, but it gets the point across. Until we see Diablo 3, this is our Diablo 3. On a side note, if Blizzard wants my $15 a month, they officially know how to get it.

just the way the characters stand...seems to much like wow >.> it's a trap I say!
Ah, this looks well good, like a Diablo3, atleast much better then Hellgate, when is it out???
I've played the beta for it... its really fun :)
Top down goodness. Let us hope they don't rush this and ruin it.
I have invites for the game. anyone want?
is a really nice game :D
@tei: Gimme? D: Please? I'll be your best friend.
@Dreadfish: i don't think it looks anything like WoW.
I would find it hard to believe anyone didn't get excited when watching the trailer.
Herm. I was super psyched about HGL, and meh on Mythos. I'm a lifer now on HGL, but not really playing and this is looking interesting. I wonder...
@tei: I would love one as well. Always on the lookout for new interesting games.
@DarkfyreFW: It is allready in Beta stage? I thought I knew pretty much everything, or most stuff about MMO's and I missed this alltogether, so when is it coming out?
Now I watched it twice, I'm getting more excited second time.
@Leaderz0rz: The intro fooled me, I was turned off by the beginning because if you look at it...exactly like wow. The characters stand like the undead even! Then gameplay came and I got happy again lol
@tei: Yes please.
Eh...problem is...it's not Diablo 3. :/
mac vers, plz!
Looks like Lunia, which is free-to-play and a blast.
I'm working on a video review of it
The sound effects are nothing to impress. The graphics are hard to tell anything by given the video. Honestly, I'm hardly impressed.
WOW.. Is this going to be Hellgate all over again where we are promised a spiritual successor to Diablo and then when it comes out, the collective media shits (not undeserving) on the games metaphorical face?
@tei: If an invite is avail for the Mac I would like one please.
Ex-Blizzard employees know how to make games. Guild-Wars is a good example. As long as ex-Blizzard employees doesn't mean ex-mailroom staff.
*sigh*
Sold.
And yes Tei, I would love one. baberg.AT.gmail
@tei: Sounds good. I'd like to try it out!
@Irenicus-the one and only: Yeah, i got a beta invite about two months ago.. its pretty polished, so i cant imagine its gonna be TOO much longer before release, but i honestly dont know for sure
Why is it that every new MMO-type game that comes out is touted as the next "Diablo 3"? And Kotaku, you are guilty of doing that, as well as other sites...
I saw the footage of Mythos and I was simply not impressed. This seems more of a puff piece meant to satisfy the people at Blizzard more than any real news on gaming.
@tei: Ohhh invites, i want one ^_^ (still addicted to D2)
Just tell me when free beta testing starts and I'll be there for hours of grinding.
Seems like every other fantasy MMO but with a different camera angle...
Mythos...the freshmaker!
Resist Bad Breath 30%
+5 to mintyness
@DarkfyreFW: Sweet :) So how is the dungeons and combat, it seems to have that Diablo feeling to me. And what about outside the core game, as in pvp and the world? Well anything you can tell me would be nice :P
I will have to go searching the web myself for more info definatley.
The gold drops sounds just like they did in Diablo. Like they stole the sound byte.
I don't know why I felt like pointing that out...eh long day, work needs to end.
I am leary after the mess that is Hellgate. I mean, it's fun, and it's finally playable after how many patches, but it's release state makes me question the judgment of Flagship and their quality control standards.
@Graywind: Satisfy Blizzard how?
@tei: Oh yes, please give me an invite. Diablo 2 nearly kept me from graduating high school. All those Diablo runs (prior to expansion pack) were much more important than homework. Psh. And an MMO that is basically a Diablo game at heart, I may get fired from my job.
Well, having s social life was good while it lasted :(
@PapaBear434: I looked forward to that too, but tbh the future set of london was never appealing to me to begin with. This seems to be more like what I want.
@tei:
If still available, I'd be up for it. Thanks for the offer regardless.
Looks like a mix of Dungeon Heroes/Darkstone/Sacred. Looks pretty cool and has me salivating over old school games again.
KK
@tei: How did I miss that comment :P Yes please, if you got any left that is :D
@tei:
Just in case you have like 20 invites.. I would also really like one. I signed up for the beta but they never let me in. :( If you don't have any more, that's cool, thanks anyway! :D
I never played an MMORPG... Or does playing Runescape for 16 minutes count?
The only thing that worries me is that Mythos is using the same game engine as HGL so I hope they've sorted out a lot of the bugs, memory leaks, and crashes that plagued HGL during its release.
On a sidenote, you can go to the mythos website and submit your email address to be eligible for a beta invite. When and if you ever get one is anyones guess though: [www.mythos.com]
@tei: I was just wondering who I'd have to blow to get a beta invite... Soo...
*gets on his knees*
Wow...that looks amazing...everytime I say to myself that there's no MMO in the market for me something like this comes out..can't wait to try it out.
argh, now you've gotten me excited about something I've been trying to ignore. Now i need to get into that beta!
I think a little pee just came out.
Looks just like titans quest to me.......
Ah well never was much of a Diablo fan...
...
@Irenicus-the one and only: And I quote, "But this new trailer of Mythos has us seriously questioning whether or not we really need lives after all, and if interactions with others-in the flesh, without the +2 Electric Boots of Courage-aren't entirely overrated.
It's a short clip, but it gets the point across. Until we see Diablo 3, this is our Diablo 3. On a side note, if Blizzard wants by $15 a month, they officially know how to get it."
Call it sucking up or brown-nosing...either way, it cannot be called real journalism.
I'm also on the beta for this, no invites yet though :(
@tei: If you have any left, I would like an invite, too! Thanks!
Looks pretty sweet!
@tei: If you have enough invites to feed the addictions before and mine, I would be greatful.
Or if anyone else had one. This is jumping up and down and screaming at me to go back to being the nut I was playing D2.
@tei: Can I please have one?
Oh, and this is not JUST ex-Blizzard folks. They hired the guy who made Fate to help them make this. Anyone who has not played Fate, NEEDS to get it. [games.wildtangent.com]
where did the banned stranglehold post disappear to and why.
I played the beta and it's really a lot more like a top down WoW than Diablo 3.
I'm a huge Diablo (and Hellgate) fan, but this game was pretty boring. Too vanilla.
@ビッグ ボス: Wait till you get older... then it will happen all the time.
I've been looking for some good MMO action lately.
KK
@MehGinla:
Agreed. I don't know, not too psyched about this considering every MMO ends up looking and feeling the same way anymore...
Hellgate was pushed and forced to get out by EA, which is why the game sucked. I mean, they ended beta's on a tuesday, and the game was out on friday, and trust me, I work int he game industry, 3 days for patching and retesting (in this situation), is not enough. Even executives in the mails and interviews said it. Would`ve been of ONLY them, the game would`ve been pushed back and polished again. I honestly liked the feeling it gives, post-apocalyptic world and all, but the gameplay is too buggy, I give another 3-4 patches before it becomes actually fun to play.
@Graywind:
Because every new game try to focus on short cooldowns, area of effect spells and no targetting?
I mean in terms of gameplay, that's what Diablo was all about. And when they're not, they're copying wow on a certain point, then fails horribly. We can't blame them, Wow does boast a huge 9 million player base. Then again I understand and agree there are exceptions, please don't quote me to give me some successful and different mmo names :D
