We first brought word last month that Konami's PSP original effort Silent Hill Origins would get the profit-maximizing PlayStation 2 port, like many PSP games before it. Today, we have more evidence. SCEA and Konami reps decided not to comment on the rumored game when we asked about it in December, but that doesn't stop retailers GameFly and Amazon from essentially confirming it, two listings dug up by Siliconera. Both companies now feature box art and release dates for the PS2 port, which is expected to ship in March.
Amazon's details on the port don't mention any additions to Silent Hill Origins, so we expect something quick and dirty. Well, probably not dirty, but you know what I mean.
Silent Hill Origins PS2 port looking increasingly probable [Siliconera]

Ooh. I want a RP version for the Ps2.
It could be like the Movie Industry's "Unrated"
I got it on PSP and that's enough. As much as I'm enjoying it, the story is the least interesting out of all the Silent Hill games.
I hope they get their stuff in gear for SH5. I expect smart and unique characters and stories from my games. Why a trucker?
Don't get me wrong, it's a fun game. Just not up to par with what I expect from Silent Hill games.
I have this game. (No not the PS2 one)
All I can say is the series is dead to me. D:::::::
Well it was since 4 anyways.
Wonder how well it will sell on the PS2.
i liked SH4 quite a bit..
@mossberg: I would have liked it if they didnt try to pass it off as a SH game.
Silent Hill 4: The Voyeur
Is what my friend and I used to call that game.
@Witzbold: lol i will say it was the worst of the series that i've played but i found it had one of the more interesting stories and some neat game play mechanics. they weren't executed as well as they should have been but they were really cool
@Witzbold: Agreed, the series died with 4.Although the story was good IMO the lack of...silenthillness (if you allow me to make up a word) killed it for me.
That and the game felt like a bug crushing simulator for the majority of it....
@Witzbold: Implying that you hated 4, I guess? I stopped playing the series at 2. I absolutely LOVED Silent Hill 2. The first was pretty good, but 2 was excellent. I always wanted to play 3 and 4 but never got around to it. There was always a Resident Evil or Fatal Frame game to play instead, I suppose. Did you try out Silent Hill Origins? If so... is it bad, too? Oh, and what sucked about 4? I know a few people that recommended it to me. Nevertheless, I believe I still have interested in 5, which'll be out... some time.
Sweet...now just port FFVII: Crisis Core over to the PS2. I love it on the PSP and all, but nothing beats being able to play it on your TV. The PSP component hook up doesn't count since the image only takes up like 1/2 of your TV.
SH3 was good, but my main problem was how fast the story fell apart 3/4ths of the way through, and the last boss fight was such a dry hump it wasnt funny.
@baked ham: Id like to sum up my feelings of origins for you but I think this will explain it a lot quicker.

I agree with him the most about the weapons breaking...
As a fan of the rest of the series I tried forcing myself to play Origins.. Honestly for all it's faults I had more fun with 4 then i've been having with Origins.
The sad part is that if they hadn't made a couple of retarded changes (breakable weapons, player not being able to run for more then 10 seconds, ability to jump between real and nightmare world at will) they could have skated by with a decent entry into the series.
Meh. I'm of the opinion that Silent Hill: Origins is a fantastic game and definitely lives up to the standards set by the series. Every franchise has its peak installment, but saying the game is crap because it ain't better than part two is a touch unrealistic...or elitist. Take your pick.
On the PSP it's also a technical marvel.
I work at a "GameStore" and we did get a "Pre-order it now or get out" sheet for this game to put in our Pre-Order book. So, I could say this game is confirmed if "GameStore"s are pre-ordering it and we have marketing for it.
@sascha23: me too and here's a spoiler, Travis IS Pyramid Head.
HOORAY FOR EXTORTION!!!!
YAAAAAAAAAAYY!
i have an idea... how about we re-release the original Sonic the Hedgehog for PS3, but as a kicker, we promise that "Turbo Processing" or whatever the hell they made up will make the game even better!
I like the SH series, but the gameplay always dissuaded me from beating them (I only have SH 4 D:)
I hope that silent hill 5 is awesome, because I love the atmosphere and story, but cant control the damn characters.
I like Origins on PSP, although I need to start over because I suck and I'm in a bit of a health pickle...but that's me. Also my first SH game.
Wouldn't be surprised to see a port to PS2, bigger install base - more potential revenue.
Yahtzee said it best: Watery ejaculate sandwich.
Oh, wait, wrong game...but I remember he didn't like it, so there.
But lemme guess, it'll come with "an exclusive special collectors secret developer peek into Silent Hill 5."
I...can't...wait...
OOOOOHHH! i have an idea... how about we market the same game to the same audience, but we promise that "TURBO-PROCESSING (or whatever SEGA called it)" will make an incredible, unforgettable experience... Hmmmm??? i smell gold... FOOLS GOLD.
this seems backwards...shouldn't they be porting PS2 games to the PSP?
@aeonpulse: BLAST processing
lol
@TinyLightning: Its osmosis, the platform with less units (PSP) has higher pressure on the titles because there is a lower number of users to buy them, so they migrate to the platform with lower pressure and higher number of users, PS2.
Technologically though, yes it does seem backwards ;)
@sadkermit: SHO is your first Silent Hill? what a way to start!!!(it is a prequel to the entire series). I highly recommend Silent Hill 2.
magically delicious.
actually, i don't care.
PSP version will be better. even though i've never played a Silent Hill game before, i can say that PSP versions of any port are usually more fun. Sony just needs to stop it. it's ruining the PSP and PS3. supporting PS2 is pointless. or at least til the PS3 price drops again.
please sony, don't do it.
The last real Silent Hill game was 2....Everyone knows this.
SH5@boopadoo: i thought it was different american company doing
@Witzbold: Danke.
I thought Silent Hill 3 was a great game. Then again I have and love the original so I thought the storyline ties were nice.
Never had a chance to play part 2 though...anyone wanna donate a copy?
@krunkjuice: so SH 3 and 4 were what halo games in disguise? i hope in retrospect you realize how silly your statement(and the one i made for the lulz) is, that is all
@mossberg: Climax did SHOrigins. The Collective is doing SHV. Both under Konami, so it can (and will) be done.
Silent Hill Origins is way better than Silent Hill 4.
Now they just need to port Brave Story, FF Dissidia, Jenne D'arc and all the other decent rpgs to ps2 so I can ignore psp for good.
@Witzbold: I thought the creepy voyeurism fit very nicely into a Silent Hill-esque setting.
@krunkjuice: Disagreed. SH3's ties with the original make it my favorite in the series.
I never, ever will understand the bad rap Silent Hill 4 gets from so-called fans. I thought it was just as psychologically disorienting and disturbing, if not moreso, than the first game.
The only complaints I ever see lodged are "it was too different" or whatever and they are usually followed with very, VERY shaky explanations that have more holes than Swiss cheese.
Yeah, the main character's voice actor had the personality of a doorknob and the burping nurses were really stupid, but everything else I thoroughly enjoyed.
I loved the idea of your supposed safe haven gradually devolving into an extension of Hell. This leads me to debunking a complaint so many people make: the first-person view. What exactly was so wrong with that? You can't honestly tell me that watching the deterioration and dilapidation of your apartment through the eyes of the character would have been just as effective or memorable in a third-person view. Also, you barely even play 25% of the game in first person, so I don't see what the big gripe is. There is zero first-person combat.
I also enjoyed re-playing all the areas with Walter Sullivan stalking you with a gun while you're dragging sick ass Eileen around.
One of the best SH in-game visuals ever is when Henry and Eileen are on the catwalk of the water tower. The camera pulls way the fuck back and you see Walter stroll right around the corner, coming for your ass.
I can understand why it may not be a favorite game of the series (my favorite is 2), but I certainly don't understand why so many "fans" hate the game or claimed it turned them off to the series. If SH4 seriously made you never want to play any SH game ever again, odds are you weren't that big of a fan to begin with.
The series died after Silent Hill 3.
Silent Hill 5 will be the tombstone on the series grave.
If Konami wants to save the series they must bring it back in Japan and give it to a new talented team with a few members of the original team silent directing them.
Also,as much as i love him as a composer,i think Yamaoka needs to leave.
We're taking reserves at GameStop for it and have a little advertisement in our release book for it as well. Known this for a couple days now >.>
I don't think anyone really cares though. I wholly expect 0 reserves for the title.
@badmoogle: Why?
I agree with your defense, Enigma, but SH4 is just a rotten game. It's just poor game-making when you need an NPC to follow you and survive and said NPC is as sluggish, unresponsive and stupid as she was during the whole game. The plot unfolds in a clumsy manner and it's painful to get all the endings.
SH4 contains one of my favorite psychological tricks of the games. Having your safe haven in first-person view grants you a feeling of attachment you don't get in third person. It's your home in the game. When that safe haven is torn from you, it's a terrifying experience.
At least it should be. The game was just so shoddy, I can see how most gamers are annoyed by those events. It was the only thing in the whole game that got to me.
Moving on, SH:Origins is a brilliant but short piece of true Silent Hill gaming. All who enjoyed SH2 really deserve to play it through. The creators mentioned SH2's feel was what they wanted in this and it's all there. Great storyline that's wonderfully bent (the trucker personality is vital to his story), truly scary moments and a glut of smart metaphors sprinkled into the game make it a must for fans of real horror. The format of a portable horror game didn't work for me, so I set it down for a month or so before finishing it at one point. When it's on PS2, everyone should give it a try.
Ack, I wound up writing a review. If you think SH is dead, this may be the revival or a badass death knell. Fans will love it, but it's short. OH, and IMO the bad ending is the "real" ending, so two playthroughs might be worth it.
@AnEternalEnigma: Two reasons it's a bad Silent Hill game:
1) The game doesn't get weird around you, you're thrown into the midst of it with 3 seconds of weak exposition at the beginning. The idea of starting out normal, becoming trapped in a cell in said normality (already creepy), and only then allowed a portal to someplace even worse...that would have been good.
2) The dark, mood setting violence (ie: hooker carving) felt forced.
Everything else, both big and small, is compounded by those two things.
I'm not much on online store confirmation. As they all have previous records of having them up for like a day then ditching it either the next day or the later on.
@baked ham: Don't let people dissuade you from playing Silent Hill 4. It was an excellent game with a few negative quirks which would place it below the other 3 in terms of how good it was. That said, I thought it was much better than Silent Hill Origins. Silent Hill Origins felt like a game by people trying to copy the Silent Hill formula rather than a game by the same creators. The review by Yahtzee is quite apt, though I wouldn't be quite so harsh on it. It's worth playing if you enjoy the series and don't mind an inferior product. That said the game design really didn't feel up to snuff.
But back to SH4. Silent Hill 4 had a very interesting story, and I really liked how the game fleshed out. I'll tell you the issues right now though.
1) It requires you to buy one very strange thing. Minor spoiler involved (don't continue this point if you don't want to read it, but it's a pretty minor spoiler IMO). A character believes his mother is a room. Yep, weird belief but whatever.
2) It's lacking in "Silent Hillness" in that there's "no otherworld".
3) They introduce a limited inventory for weapons. I'll tell you now that ranged weapons are mostly useless since ammo takes an inventory slot. Plus IIRC there's weapon degradation.
4) They introduce unkillable foes. "Ghosts" in the game appear every now and then. They're pretty awesome because they have something to do with the story and they're pretty damn creepy. But they're annoying because they hurt you just by being near you and if you beat them up, they fall to the floor for a few seconds before getting back up. There IS a way to get rid of them permanently but you can't get rid of all of them permanently.
Other than that, I thought the game was very good. I'm kind of sad it's gotten so much hate because I really liked it (minus the issues I referenced above).
Basically, I think I have the total opposite opinion than Mavwick. :) I haven't gotten the bad ending though, and I don't know if I ever will. Busy playing better games. (Currently working my way through Mass Effect).
IMO the series' greatness goes in chronological order. I know a lot of people thought SH2 was the pinnacle and I'm hard pressed to disagree, but I'll give SH the nod just for being the first and for being the game that got me to love the series with a passion.
hell i went into a gamestop today and they had a ad in their "Up coming games" book about it being on the PS2 i thought it was already announced and just didn't hear about it
I thought Silent Hill 4 wasn't so bad. I agree with Yahtzee (The Escapist) when he said that Silent Hill 4's story was actually good.
However, I must admit that the series did go downhill since Silent Hill 2... though each following game is still decent in its own rights.
I used to believe that Silent Hill Origins wouldn't be that good, but by lowering my standards, I got to enjoy it quite a bit. After hearing about some major screw up with the development team during the game's production, I knew I shouldn't be expecting a game as good as SH2.
wow, so the best thing you people had to say about Origins was that one or two of you liked it better than SH4, which wasnt a bad game, just wasnt one of the better installments, and some (lookin at Witz here) think it just wasnt Silent Hill.
Man, any hype i'd managed to keep about this title after the zero punctuation review, is dwindling. It's still a rental, but not an excited one.
@TheIrishNinja (PSN), IrishNinja2099 (XBL): I dunno. Seems like the haters have overwhelmed this thread, but I've seen several articles involving Origins in the last month with a lot of positive comments. Like I said, it's a great addition to the story of 1 and 3, it's a technical marvel on the PSP, the combat is the best in the series to date, and the music and sound are all first rate. The theater (particularly how the stage is utilized) section is also the best use of a locale in any Silent Hill game. Ever.
The inclusion of achievements (called "Accolades" in SH0) is also a nice addition.
I really wonder what the fuck has happened to people's standards when they crap all over a game as good as Origins. What really floors me is that people don't even seem willing to admit that despite any misgivings they have about it, it's still one of the most visually impressive pieces on the PSP to date.
I suppose when an entire generation of gamers have been pussy-whipped into throwing their adorati
