"More In Store For The PLAYSTATION 3"

Think Uncharted is pretty? You ain't seen nothing yet! The PS3 is just getting warmed up. According to Evan Wells from developer Naughty Dog:

The PLAYSTATION 3 is a complex yet powerful system. We could not pull off the rich, seamless world of Uncharted on any other console. Because the system is so powerful, it means that tapping into that power requires great engineering efforts. We're lucky that Naughty Dog has some of the best programmers in the industry. I can also tell you that as we're finishing Uncharted, we've found new ways of optimizing our engine to take advantage of the hardware. All of which means that, as beautiful as our game is, there is a lot more in store for the PLAYSTATION 3.

And where will we see these "new ways of optimizing our engine"? Naughty Dog's planning future Uncharted installments, of course.

Uncharted was awesome. And I liked the unlockable goodies and slow-mo modes.
I'll be keeping my eyes open, but I hope they stay away from cartoonish, Jak and Daxter-like characters. You've spoiled me on Uncharted. Now do a sci-fi epic.

    Do it.

  • Hang on though isnt the engine this game runs on a modded Gears Of War Engine?! If so surley it could run on the 360?

  • Blah blah blah.

I'm so sick of this bullshit bravado from game developers. Shut up and make your damn game, because ultimately that's what you're going to be judged on, not some theoretical "power of the console" marketing ploy.

  • Ouch, low blow Bash. XD
    I'm sure they'll make a new IP...totally....yep...they will! Just wait!....a while...

Uncharted was a great game. Also one of the best looking games I've played recently. If the sequel improves upon it and looks better, count me in.

I still have not touched uncharted as i've been busy on here and work. Either way after paying thedemo i though it was a very good looking game. I wonder what they are going to be able to juice out of it.

  • @InsomniaBob: seconded, every bit. even the naughty ones.

@Strangelove: im sick of it too, but when you deliver like they did, i turn a blind eye to a certain degree of shit-talking.

@Shindokie (psn and xbl): i slept on it too, and i wish i hadn't. seriously, give it a go over the weekend if you can.

  • @Strangelove:He's just practicing good business habits. Why wouldn't you push the platform of which you're developing on??
Marketing on all fronts is required to gain an audience.

    @TheIrishNinja (PSN), IrishNinja2099 (XBL):

I guess this game is going to have me all thursday. So it seems. Thanks. I'll tell you my reaction on the game. I assume you will know the answer.

  • @Strangelove:

They did make their game. And by the looks of it they succeeded. It is better than spouting nonsense in online blog forums and have nothing to show for.

  • its sad how alot of these companies tend to pump up the system alot more then their own companies' capacity at creating a good overall game. there's alot more to a game then just nice graphics, storyline for instance is just as important if not more. hell in the best games so far on the system the most praised aspects have been the voice acting and character development.

  • @Shindokie (psn and xbl): Quit playing so much CoD4 and go get the damn game. I've told you at least once. It is one of the best games on the PS3 so far. You are doing yourself major injustice for not at least renting it.

Ohhh and by you starting Uncharted I can maybe pass you in rank. Muahahaha

  • Image of Shindokie Shindokie at 01:29 AM on 01/15/08 *

    @Balance_In_Life:

Hahaha. I have like 30k more points then you. You can pass my rank but you won't pass me in points kills and all that good stuff. I'll play it when i get home tomorrow then. I just don't want to be tired when i play it you know. I usually play COD4 when i'm tired because its online so its like run shoot run shoot. I want to embrace the game so that's why i'm saying thursday, but for you guys I will try. Also i need to talk to you Maldron and Anemone and some other Kotaku-ites to see about the COD4 clan.

  • @Shindokie (psn and xbl): Off topic, but is there a Warhawk clan? Just curious.

Anyway on the story, yes I agree with above: sci-fi epic, please! I'm looking forward to seeing how much power talented developers are able to squeeze out of the system - this year and 5 years from now.

  • Image of Anemone Anemone at 01:39 AM on 01/15/08 *

@Blinded220: Yes. PapaBear434 runs it. It's sort of inactive, but it's there, and so am I occasionally.

  • @Strangelove:
After proving themselves so thoroughly with uncharted; I'll listen to whatever they have to say about their next game.

Naughty Dog is a prime example of what even a smaller company can do with the PS3 if they have talented people working for them.

    Keep em coming Naughty Dog.

  • COD4 on the PS3? I'm interested. Talk to me! My PSN is "Lancehead"
I need me some friends, and it's always fun to play with fellow Kotaku-ites, yes? :D

  • @Chopsticks: cool, add all the kotaku kids with "PSN" somewhere in their member names, but watch out for that maldron fellow; he's kind-hearted, but spoony and ill-advised.

  • Image of Shindokie Shindokie at 01:47 AM on 01/15/08 *

    @TheIrishNinja (PSN), IrishNinja2099 (XBL):

*slap* Talking behind Maldrons back? I'm embarrassed for the both of us *whisper* but what you say is true*

@Chopsticks: Yeah hit me up. Ill see if i can get a game in tomorrow. Beware to be made fun of though :P

  • Image of dowingba dowingba at 01:48 AM on 01/15/08 *

The PLAYSTATION 3 will consume all life on this planet, once the devs figure out how to engineer-ify it.

  • Didn't the Killzone 2 devs say this too? I read that Uncharted failed to enter the US top 20, so I'd assume a multiformat release might have helped? Why didn't people buy it?

  • I still say that the next-gen filter in Uncharted was the funniest thing I'd seen all year in a video game.

  • Yes Uncharted was/is bad ass i still love how they put in that "Next Gen" Mode that turned everything brown and shiney i think they put that in as a joke going "REAL LIFE IS BROWN!"

  • Image of Shindokie Shindokie at 01:53 AM on 01/15/08 *

    @Eclectus:

People aren't always willing to try new things sadly. *looks at okami*

  • PSN = Sihaya
Uncharted was spot on. It was campy yet fun, slick and stylish. Very little in the way of complaints, which it's many selling points outweigh.

Naughty Dog is probably right that it couldn't be made on the other system. Saying so may be more truth than marketing...

  • Honestly these kinds of statements would be a tad more believable if made by an independent third-party publisher rather than a first-party studio who for all we know is simply parroting what Sony tells it to.

He's also hyping up the graphics in Uncharted a little bit too much, honestly it's nice but it's at the same quality as the graphics in games like Mass Effect. Call of Duty 4, a multiplatform game, looks better than Uncharted.

PS3 may well have a lot more power under its hood, question is should we believe this guy's word? I'll reserve judgement until I've seen Final Fantasy 13 and Metal Gear Solid 4 do what they've promised it would do 'only on the PS3'.

  • @Eclectus: new IP, during a wave of other titles, i think it sadly got lost in the mess.

@GregoriusH: @Raziel3333: Yes. somehow forgot about that, but that was hilarious. all brown!

  • @Soldrak: Im playing Mass Effect right now, and loving it, but if you actually play both, Uncharted is clearly better looking, and a great deal more polish (significantly less tearing). But more importnatly, its a lotta fun.

  • @Eclectus: It didn't hit top 20 due to the fact that the PS3 needed a game like this before the holidays. At my Best Buy I would see this and Ratchet walk out the door with most PS3. It was due to the lack of a good install base. After the holidays It will sell better due to the fact that this is one of those must own titles if you have a PS3 (aka: larger install base). Ratchet and Uncharted were released at the perfect time for the growth of PS3.

Bah @Shindokie (psn and xbl): it's only because you played Headquarters. I didn't even know about it until you told me about it! >.< :D

  • I am so tired of all this needless posturing from developers. If the PS3 can do more then the X360, that is great. Rather then talking about it (which has been going on since the console was first released and was not meeting expectations) show all of us in the games you create. The 360 has a large list of games that run and look better on it, then the PS3. If the PS3 can do more, do it, but boasting about something that has never came to fruition is rather ridiculous. Comments like these come out daily for the PS3, I would expect the editors at Kotaku have better taste then to post this nonsense.

  • also as far as "NEW" IPs go, i say they should revisit some older IPs, like say "WAY OF THE WARRIOR"

    YEA BOY!!!!

  • The best part about Uncharted is its characters. Without going into too much detail, I thought the plot twist was a little disappointing. The presentation and the characters, on the other hand, were simply amazing. Drake and Elena had so much charm and personality. Can't wait for the next game.

  • @TheIrishNinja (PSN), IrishNinja2099 (XBL): And why don't you have CoD4 for the PS3? You didn't forget about us did you? /cry

Ohhh the fun I could be having crushing you with a silenced P90 right now! But alas... you have switched on us. /pout

    :P

  • @InsomniaBob: I'll be keeping my eyes open, but I hope they stay away from cartoonish, Jak and Daxter-like characters. You've spoiled me on Uncharted. Now do a sci-fi epic.

    Do it.

After playing through Ratchet, it'd be intriguing to see what they could do with J&D. But yeah, I'd love a sci-fi epic so much more.

@Strangelove: Yeah, I'm also sick of it. But it's just part of the marketing. And if any anybody can claim it, it's these guys and Insomniac.

I read somewhere that Uncharted was only using 10% of the SPU capacity (according to the profiling software). I'm not really sure how much more they can get out of it, but even 50% would be staggering. That's a 35x improvement across 7 SPUs. They obviously wouldn't get that whole increase (the general purpose CPU and GPU will become a bottle neck), but 1080p/60FPS with higher resolution textures should easily be doable.

  • Untapped power, huh? With AAA games costing around 30-40 million dollars to create for the thing, your game is going to have to be better in sales than Uncharted. It's only sold 800,000 copies worldwide so far. That isn't nearly enough to make a profit.

I guess they're counting on it having long legs...we'll see.

  • @Muisee: notice the headline of the article wasnt about the dick-measuring, to be fair.

@Balance_In_Life: haha sorry man, i take time on all systems, and right now, im balls-deep in mass effect. ill be back around, but with uncharted done, ill need something (beyond everyday shooter) to keep me there! White Knight, LBP, something proper, christ knows youll see me 24/7 when MGS hits.

and no CoD4 cause after Orange Box, i think i ran dry on shooters, need some time off for the moment - though i hear great things about that one, even single player campaign.

  • @TheIrishNinja (PSN), IrishNinja2099 (XBL): I will say the entire single player campaign was rather powerful. It messes with stuff that no FPS really has. Infinity Ward did an amazing job on this game. The future of Next-gen looks amazing and this is one of the few games of the FPS genre that I've enjoyed in a long time. By far worth a shot if you haven't played it. At least rent it, after mass effect that is. Yeah i decided to get a nice receiver instead of my Xbox 360. But soon... maybe tax return soon.

  • @lost_in_hollywood: Where the hell did you get that? Both Naughty Dog and Insomniac wrote their engines from scratch and were written with the PS3 in mind from the start ( That's not to say they won't work on Xbox 360, but they are primarily PS3 engines ). I'm not dissing the Unreal Engine as it's proved it's pedigree on both Xbox 360 and PS3, but give these guys (ND) some due credit. They are amazing developers!

  • @sauvage: Actually Naughty Dog and Insomniac don't work on 360. They are First and Second party respectively.

    [en.wikipedia.org]

    [en.wikipedia.org]

@lost_in_hollywood: Where in the hell did you hear that? Naughty Dog created it's own engine and it is remarkable how well they did it.

  • @Balance_In_Life: Fair point about ND, but Insomniac is not owned by Sony, last time I checked, so there is nothing stopping them from making sure their engine also works on the Xbox 360, just in case. Whether they would actually bother doing that considering all their fans are Playstation based/bound, is another matter.

  • @lost_in_hollywood: No, it isn't. Naughty Dog made their own PlayStation 3 Engine mostly themselves and perhaps with some code sharing with other Sony Devs

  • Although uncharted was a great game with an ok storyline, i always felt like there was something missing with the combat.. it didnt feel "realistic". Cant quite put my finger on it. Maybe ive been spoiled by COD4 where i was just totally immersed by the chaotic combat in it. I know there two totally different type of games but still...

  • Next Gen Way of the Warrior!

Okay, I wouldn't wish that on anyone. How about you guys take some of your knowledge of making epic, nonlinear RPGs, since you did it way before most others (see: Rings of Power for Genesis) and make a killer western RPG?

  • @lost_in_hollywood: LOL omg u 360 fanboys dont loose a chance to bash the ps3...ND have their own engine!

  • A little OT, but I thought was quite interesting is that the BioShock developers are currently looking for PS3 developers. Could BS2 be coming to he PS3? Or maybe a totally new IP?
This is not a troll attempt, check their website for more info.

  • So does this mean they can get rid of the damn tearing at last?

The later Jack and Daxter's were particularly spoilt by this aberration, and it was disappointing to see it carry on to the PS3 (although I've only seen the demo - holding off till it gets cheaper to buy it).

  • The PS3 is like Nuclear Fusion. It has unlimited potential and can very well change the world we live in.

Personally I think that we have better odds of engineering nuclear fusion than getting all the potential out of the PS3.

  • @sauvage: Yeah but they are second party. As close to first party as you are ever going to see. Sony pays very well I'm sure to see that they stay put. Plus the fact they the studio has a very strong relation ship to Sony and Naughty Dog is i'm sure a factor too.
