Dojo Dump: Return Of The Dojo

olimar_pikmin.jpgAfter an insufferable business week that saw the release of zero new information bit about Super Smash Bros. Brawl due to holiday, the Smash Bros Dojo and our weekly wrap up on the matter have returned. The Dojo's return was met with a surprising new addition to the roster of brawlers, space adventurer Olimar of Pikmin fame, who will pluck his partners out of the ground to use as weapons in the heat of battle. We also get a look at Snake's Final Smash, which seems to be the most unique we've seen so far.

Enough chitchat! We've been without for a whole Friday, so on with the Dojo Dump!

Monday: Melee Stages get an update, with details on Yoshi's Island, Brinstar from Metroid, Corneria from Starfox and even more.
Tuesday: The Dojo details Stadium Multi-Man Brawl featuring the Fighting Alloy Team and co-op play. There's even Wi-Fi Connection support!
Wednesday: New characters! Pikmin and Olimar join the fray. The Pikmin World Map remix provides a nice soundtrack while reading this news.
Thursday: Snake's Final Smash involves a rope ladder, a helicopter and a grenade launcher. This is the one hidden character I'm looking forward to most.
Friday: Pikmin and Olimar's special moves are profiled, explaining how Olimar with rely on Pikmin plucking for just about everything.

  • Pwn.

  • Er, I mean....
All in good favor. Dojo Dump is finally back.
When will they end, though? Shortly before the Japanese release?

  • Olimar was totally unexpected, and really innovative. Love it.

  • He loads a new clip? How can that be?

  • Hmm, thoughts of a all Olimar Giant Melee match come to mind. Giant Pikmin being thrown everywhere, awesome.

  • Snakes got back!
Why does Sakurai continue to focus on ...it?

  • @pj898:
    His ass?

  • Of all the newcomers added since the Dojo began, Olimar definately came out of no where. But now that he's in, I'm glad because he looks to be the most interesting fighter of the bunch. He's even inspired me to go out and pick up a copy of Pikmin.

  • Yes. Sakurai has a strange obsession with Snake's (if I knew how to spell derry-air I'd type it here)

I'm incredibly excited about Olimar, and am hoping for a Pikmin Wii game...

Snake's Final Smash is sweet. Granted, I'm sure everyone was waiting for a Metal Gear to pop out, but this'll do.

  • @Sheetman: sorry for the double post, but I reccomend Pikmin 2 over the first. Both are fried gold, though.

  • If u get the poison mushroom, then Capt. Olimar will probably be even smaller than the Pikmin.

Nintendo has truly made Brawl bigger than SSBM. In fact, it seems like Brawl may have the most off-line and online features of any video game and there may be even more revealed in future updates.

  • Olimar is a great addition. I see him on the same plane as the ice climbers because both depend on their partners so much during the fight.

  • Ok, this is cool, but if they're going to add Mega Man, they'd better tell us soon. Honestly, I think Mega Man is a MUCH more important Nintendo character than most of the Brawl lineup, even if he is third party.

  • I wonder if its possible to attack the Pikmin.

  • Olimar four-for-alls are going to be hilarious.
I still take eight ice climbers onto the fountain of dreams with the only items being pokeballs set on maximum.

But Olimar? That's four Olimars, twenty-four possible Pikmin... toss in character trophies and pokeballs, as well as characters that just show up some stages like the Shy-Guy Karters... That's pushing what, forty moving characters on a screen at once? In a fighting game?

This game is insane, I can't wait to be locked up in a looney bin playing it all day.

  • @Vyse24: Get offa my icon!

  • @Vyse24:
Probably. They're like the second Ice Climber. Also, in the Olimar Special Moves update, you can see what happens to Pikmin when they die.

is it just me or does the corneria level seem smaller?

  • @altgod: He's not in.

  • Wow.. I cant believe it. They've created Olimar almost PRECISELY how I pictured and wanted him... Moves and everything.. Its like a wish come true.. ^,^
BTW- was I the only one who really wanted him in SSBB? Everyone els seems stunned and unexpected?..

  • @MajorWedgie: I thought he'd be a great addition, save for the fact that he's 3" tall according to the Pikmin lore...
Honestly, I was expecting it to be a 3" Olimar and the Pikmin inside a cockpit controlling some sort of six foot robot or something. Just so the characters remained proportionate (which they've done so far).

  • Problem with Megaman is that there's so many incarnations of him. Personally, if I wanted Megaman to be in it, I'd want Megaman X, but that would piss of people who want the original Megaman, or that God-awful Megaman.exe. It's too hard to really add him into the game.

  • Olimar is going to be an awesome addition. His play style is incredible.

  • @TheSonicGamer: Its not like they couldn't just change his skin/costume to the different Megamans seeing as they all pretty much operate under the same principle and have roughly the same proportions (sans maybe the original pre Megaman 8 and Rockman and Forte).

Other than the Original they all have had Swords, they all have had Megabusters and the Robot Masters have had some overlap weapon wise as well!.

  • @CogSmooch: It's "derrière" or "cul" (the french version of "ass")

This week been great overall. :)

Just Preordered it at The Source, now I can't wait :D

  • So Olimar has a Pikmin DoT atack? Sweeet.

  • Nothing on Snakes snug butt?

  • @TheSonicGamer: I think the bigger problem is that...
One, Mega Man is already in a fighting game, MVSC, so to translate him into another entirely different style of fighter, do you try to appease fans of his previous fighting style or reinvent him for a different focus in combat? Of course, his various forms come into play as well... which would be better to put into the game?

    and...

Two, there are already fighters in the game that have the similar combat styles or abilities, such as Samus or Kirby. With a arm cannon and the ability to take other's powers respectively, you already kinda have what most people would expect from him. Of course, including him just for his face value is great, but would you really care all that much in the long run if he were just a Samus clone?

  • That yellow alloy sure does look like an Animal Crossing boy...

  • @Tonx:
No they haven't. Pikachu should be small enough to hang off Link's shoulders. Yet in smash he comes up to his waist. Kirby is only 8 inches, blah, blah, blah, etc, etc, etc. Size is taken loosely in smash.

@ampillion : works it harder, makes it better, does it faster, makes us stronger.: So, because you are unimaginative that must mean megaman couldn't be anything but a samus clone? Nevermind that he has hundreds of abilities to draw from, including his buddy Rush. No offense but just because you can't think of a moveset for him doesn't mean he'd turn into a samus clone just because of "teh arm cannons!1"

  • I'm loving the light-gun aspect of Snake's final. However, Olimar's moveset being a 2D version of Pikmen absolutely trumps it.

There's some great franchise-respect going on in the Dojo, especially for the newcomers.

  • @MajorWedgie: There's bound to be some people who expected him. But many (including myself) are just in shock to see him fighting. Not a bad thing, just unexpected.

Mmm...I too wonder when are these updates are going to end. My guess is after the Japanese release.

  • I was expecting him in it, but more as a hidden character rather than one revealed to all on the site

  • Final Smash for Olimar better be an attack done by the Pikmin...1000 Pikmin.

  • Image of DaiMacculate DaiMacculate at 04:41 PM on 01/11/08 *

@ampillion : works it harder, makes it better, does it faste...: I might be alone in feeling this way, but I never thought MVC or MVC2 were very good games, and I'd prefer they not influence any future fighting games if at all possible. I know some people like it, and thats fine, but MVC2 in particular is everything Smash is not, its hectic without purpose, unbalanced as hell, and just generally annoying to me. The first time I played it in an arcade I was shocked that nobody was going into seizures from trying to play it for more than 5 minutes.

I actually liked Capcom's earlier Marvel games, I just didn't like MVC. Of course, I don't think CVS or SVC are exactly stellar games either, but none of them are broken like MVC.

All that said, I don't want MegaMan in Smash, give me Simon Belmont if you want to put in another good 3rd party game character ;)

This does make me wish I'd played Pikmin, perhaps I'll look into picking up a used copy of the second game.

  • I want Andy Samberg in this game, with a laser-cat.

  • Image of NeoAkira NeoAkira at 04:53 PM on 01/11/08 *

@ampillion : works it harder, makes it better, does it faste...:

If megaman would be a samus clone then aren't marth and roy link clones?

    just something to think about.

  • @Tonx: They've stayed proportionate? Pikachu is the size of a horse.

  • This game is coming soon out in Japan, and yet no official word about European release date from Nintendo. Nintendo released big game like Super Mario Galaxy almost same time in all three big markets, so why it is impossible to launch this game simultaneously in both US and Europe? It's a fighting game, so one would think that there is even less text to localize than in a Super Mario game. I fear that us Europeans and Aussies have to wait for this game a long time (2 - 4 months).

  • I thought that proportions didn't really matter that much because the characters are supposed to be fighting trophy/figurine things, not the actual characters themselves.

  • @metadae: Yes, exactly. Thank you.

Captain Olimar is great, great news. I've been wanting him since Melee. Now, if Mr. Sakurai can defy space, time, and the law, and bring me Battletoads, I will fly to Japan and grovel at his feet.

  • I love this game.

Something that people haven't thought of though, relating to @Tonx: 24 possible Pikmin with the abilty to quickly pluck and throw another, not to mention on a high traffic stage with items, assist trophies, final smashes and pokeballs plausibly at the same time, that seems to requires a hardcore processor, not to mention robust WiFi connections.

Could Olimar have the next Zerg Rush? Sweet.

  • @Tonx:

    No. They haven't.

    Kirby is 8cm.
    Samus is 7ft.

Never has Smash had characters remain proportional in size.

  • @DaiMacculate:

Erm... why in the world do the previous fighters have anything to do with it?

Smash Bros is not another fighter. Frankly, if anyone is dumb enough to complain that he doesn't resemble his style in any other fighter, they can piss off.

As for which to put in, it's not a terribly difficult decision. Either go with the classic or go with the most recent (Model X of the ZX series). Either way, it should definitely be blue, despite my fanatic adoration of Zero.

Your second point proves you a parrot with a keyboard. He wouldn't have to copy abilities. As for the arm cannon, let's count the number of Brawlers with swords...

If you think he'd inevitably be a Samus clone, you're a moron. No exceptions.

  • @TheSonicGamer:

The same could be say of Sonic and those who rabidly oppose his inclusion.

I guess he won't be in Smash.

  • @Sheetman: I must say, Pokemon Trainer was more of a surprise to me. Totally didn't expect more reps for Pokemon and rumors are that Lucario will also be playable... I mean really, you'd think Gamefreak was making the entire game.

Sonic deserves to be in, SEGA can't make a good Sonic game to save their lives, it's DIMPS that's made the last good in Sonic's name, Sonic Rush and Rush Adventure.

I want Megaman, but they could say "Megaman is a another special case" Seeing how Pikachu gets alt. costumes and Wario gets his Overalls, so they could put in all the gay forms and the cool forms X and Classic.

  • Come on, get Bomberman in there. :D

  • I was hoping on Olimar or Chibi-robo...Don't know how he's gonna fight Olimar is like a millimeter tall.

  • Looking forward to use of the RGB-6 and a helicopter.

  • Image of NeoAkira NeoAkira at 07:26 PM on 01/11/08 *

Maybe Megaman will show up as an assist trophy?

  • Olimar a surprise???

Come on, he's the only new, high-profile main Nintendo character since the Gamecube launched. Why is this surprising in the slightest?

  • Image of BPMμ BPMμ at 08:29 PM on 01/11/08 *

    @NeoAkira:
If someone as high-profile as Megaman were to show up in Brawl, he'd be a playable character. Anyone else from the Megaman series (Roll, Protoman, Bass, Zero, Sigma, Axl, etc.) would be Assist Trophies, just like Grey Fox (Metal
