Wagner James Au has an interesting write-up over on Gigaom comparing the three Democratic presidential front-runners to the three video game consoles. Here's his take on Barack Obama as the Nintendo Wii:
Barack Obama is the Nintendo Wii: The multi-racial candidate who was first dismissed by Washington insiders for not having enough power or third-party backers — but has gone on to draw immense popularity, not just from hardcore party faithful, but from the young and old, independents and Republicans alike. Instantly appealing like the Wii, Obama is popular not because of his library of policies, but because he is changing the way the game is played.
His write-ups for Edwards and Clinton are just as apt, but the fact he didn't manage to mention Red Ring of Death or constantly fluxing hardware line-up sort of takes away from the charm of the article.
Primary Game: Candidates as Consoles [Gigaom]

Thats some brilliant writing right there.
My chips are on Obama.
Why do the editors always have to start with the console bashing? Its beginning to be in every post it seems. Stick to the damn information, thats what your good at.
That's intelligent. The one fatal flaw in this article is saying Bill Clinton is Xbox and Hilary is X360. It'd say its more of a Bill = PS2, Hilary = PS3. Louder, would be more expensive for us all, and no one really wants.
Awe shit, why the 360 get the hag!
You think fanboy arguments are bad now ... just wait until you just added the greatest sheeple debate of them all. Politics!
*knows 100% now Kotaku relishes in forum fights*
GTFO my 360 Hillary!
"hardcore party faithful"? Is he saying the Wii is backed by newcomers to gaming and Nintendo fanboys with this?... I actually kinda believe that.
@PownerOfNewbs: You must be apeshit crazy if you think the PS3 is loud.
@EnigmaNemesis:
Agreed. As if the console fanboyism wasn't bad enough do we really need to bring politics into it as well.
GRAVEL COLLECO VISION!!!
That's crazy witty.
Well, Hilary certainly is LOUD enough to be an Xbox 360. And white enough as well.
Uh oh. Here comes another 100+ response thread.
@EnigmaNemesis: Since the new year we have had like four or five big fights like that. Not a good omen for the rest of the year. ;)
It hurts me that that woman has to represent the console I'm currently fangirling. I can't really complain, though. The analogy works, and the man's witty.
Kotaku has gotten to where it is today by fostering as much fanboy aruments as humanly imaginable. It's their thang and there's plenty of posters who are more than willing to take the bait.
Me? I'd rather talk about video games.
"constantly fluxing hardware lineup" - man, if it means what I'm thinking, that's harsh.
GObama!
gooo Obama Wii.
@rluzinski:
Me? I'd rather talk about video games.
Same here.
I would vote for Edwards and would also get a Ps3.
lol damn people just have a laugh
Edwards and Ps3.
... I guess that would make Ron Paul Steam.
Wii-bama has some new ideas but people who care about politics get bored because everything he does is gimmicky.
Three Six-ton breaks down under pressure.
Playstation Three-wards looks nice until he attempts to port the other presidential candidates opinions.
Do I win a prize for bashing all three candidates and the console they were paired with in one sentence for each pair?
Here's another one.. Ron Paul = Phantom. It's a nice concept, but he will never make it to the public.
I'm just surprised that Hillary's mentioned at all, given her staunch anti-video game postion.
When I think of my 360, a ring of "death" and H.Clinton comes to mind. Beyond that, I wouldn't compare any politics to video game consoles. Politicians are generally the enemy to the gamers. They take our sex scenes away, they take our extremely explicit gore away and than slap ratings down. Pooey to politicians.
@bluesquareapple: You sir, won yourself a follower.
No fucking wonder the X360 gets RROD its, its friggin period.
DAMN IT.
Two! Two politically inflammatory threads in one day! Ah-ah-ah!
I wonder how long it would take to code a blogging system where particularly lousy entries could be voted off the island.
linky seems dead...some one threatened to sue...my bet is on Hillary, or Sony...for the sueing not the winning.
damn I couldn't want any of these psychos as a president
Well I can't load the webpage for some reason, but the Obama one is pretty well written and seems thought-out. I'm interested now in the explanations of the others.
@Seiven: No its just that it got a mass aumount of people trying to get in to read it no thanks to kotaku LOL
You know what would be awesome? If people start bringing Wiimotes to Obama rallies.
So cute.
Too bad Kucinich is a GameGear ... and Nader is a Nomad.
Wow, lots of Sega good ideas bombed back in the day.
@Rebochan: The bodyguards might think its some sort of remote detonator and dogpile you. ;D
Imagine the news for gamers that would make! lol
looks like the site has been Kotaku'd. oh well, I hate politics anyway.
@Witzbold:
Now I don't own a PS3, but every other time I visited a gamestore with a PS3 on display, there was a distinctive Jet like Roar coming from the region of the PS3 which gives me reason to question your statement.
.
All of the consoles are load this generation, in my opinion.
.
The PS3's fans sound like its preparing for take off.
The Xbox 360's disk drive sounds like the disk is desperately trying to escape.
And the Wii, while usually quiet, will unexpectedly start shouting about from its disk drive or fan with a sound I would not have expected from its usually quiet demeanor. (perhaps it was drunk)
.
It sort of makes me miss the cartridge days, when our consoles actually were inanimate objects.
At first I was going to say something about how weak it was to make this type of comparison, but then I realized that perhaps this would be the only way to spur gamers into thinking about politics.
And yes candidates are like consoles in that corporate interests have invested millions in them to produce a product that they hope will appeal to the masses and be an investment for them for the next few years.
;)
@brent_w: loud
@brent_w: That's probably the display's own fans. I seem to remember reading how the displays have to have fans since the PS3s are usually in an enclosed space. The actual PS3's fan is pretty quiet. I barely notice mine, even when folding for hours. The 360's fan and disc drive sound like it's preparing to take off. The PS3 is more of a gentle breeze blowing by.
I tend to be one of those people who isn't particularly bothered by the supposedly "loud" X360 so I may be biased, but I'd have to agree: The PS3 isn't loud at all. Louder than the PS2 perhaps (though the difference is pretty negligible), but not entirely loud.
In a sense, I have the same problem with Obama that I do with the Wii - a classic case of rhetoric versus truth. There's a misconception that in beauty lies truth, something that appears to have contributed to an infatuation which Obama that focuses upon a ill-defined promise for "change". No one can deny his considerable skills as an orator, but you'd be hard pressed to convince me that he's doing anything other than playing around the issues like any other leading candidate at this point. Like the Wii, the promise of what Obama COULD bring to the table trumps the reality that we're being pulled forward by promises rather than more substantial evidence that a promising future lies ahead.
Of course, Hillary isn't without her flaws and certainly isn't above adopting the rhetoric of her competition in order to further her cause. (She too is fighting for this nebulous "change" within America these days) This is neither surprising nor unexpected. When the 360 gets a waggle of its own, we can come back and put another feather in this article's cap.
And Edwards? Like the PS3, it's been about a year since people were talking about him en masse and it'll be another before we figure out where in the hell they stand. The race may appear wide open, but the window of opportunity for these two seem quite as large as it once did.
It's a shame that we couldn't work Kucinich into this. I can't really figure out what console he'd be though. Maybe he's just a peripheral or a killer app instead?
@rlh445: I bow to you.... hahahahah!
@brent_w: I do own a PS3, and unless I sit next to it with my ear against it, I wouldn't know it was on.
@rlh445: Yes, and she even has the occasional breakdown!
Hillary probably caught the RROD from Bill.
Some antibiotics will clear it right up.
@brent_w: Mine sits right next to my PC. Literally right next to it. Hardly makes a noise even less if you arent playing anything.
Ask anyone else who owns one. Theres quite a few of us here.
You need to remember store display systems are on all day and usually not treated with care / sealed in a rather poorly ventilated space. NEVER and I mean NEVER base your impressions off of a store demo unit.
@smitty1123: I think it makes Ron Paul that fake PS3 with WINNER! on it.
@smitty1123: He's more like HD-DVD.
I just noticed the title says 'Hiilary' haha. that would have been perfect if she were the one being compared to the Wii.
I guess that makes Ron Paul the 3D0. Has no clue about economics yet has a hardcore cult following.
Unfortunately the site seems to be getting mashed so I can't get through to read the hilarity.
