I don't know about you, but when I play shooters on my PC, I don't gently run my mouse across the limited confines of my mouse pad like some lily-livered pussy. I hurl the bastard. Which makes me feel better about myself, but also hinders my performance somewhat. Hence my interest in this, a new mousepad from Ratscar. At 35.4 x 17.7 inches (almost 10x the size of a normal pad) it's utterly impractical, and at $40 it's waaay out of my price bracket for a mousepad, but...it'd be nice to have the option to hurl both your mouse and your keyboard (and scanner, and printer, and morning coffee) all off the same pad, wouldn't it?
giant mouse pad offers tons of surface area [technabob]
This Mouse Pad Is So Big It's Ridiculous

Hey thats kinda cool! Cept one would cry if they spilt something on it.
Hmmm. Interesting but i'd rather have one of those customisable ones from NoID.
Has anyone bought one of those? I was wondering about the quality...
That would be a bitch to clean up.
Also if you're having to hurl your mouse across the room, you should adjust the sensitivity a little :P
40 bucks?
Wouldn't it be easier to stretch a piece of polyester over your desk?
Ballpoint mice ftw! Fear my random wild twitching in TF2! That headshot looks perfect one moment but the next I draw out a pentagram in a millisecond with that rifle laser and wave goodbye to my face. And yet I love this mouse. :D
(but despise my thumb)
everyone should just get a pen tablet. ^,^
@MajorWedgie: ...sure, if they're doing image editing work. I love my Intuos, but I'd never be caught dead playing games with that mouse. Or the pen! Unless, of course, it was a Kirby DS clone for PC. Or Crayon Physics. Or... well, you know what I mean!
Anyway, I recall seeing comically large desk-sized mousepads like this before, but I can't remember from who. If there was an Everglide mat this big, I have to admit that I might give it honest consideration. I never thought I would have ever wanted so much room to move a mouse on, but sure enough... Can't recommend their products enough. Plus if no one you're playing online knows better, you can still write off bad shots on a poor mouse surface! Everybody wins.
Eh, I've got a larger pad (one of those cheap-o 5 buck "giganto" pads) but it doesn't look nearly as good as that one. And yeah, I spilled something on it... and it doesn't look good at all. :(
$40 really isn't that bad, most gaming pads are usually about he same!
I just put velcro patches at the bottom of mine so it wont run out of place. No need for this...but it does look cool i guess.
@Albino: yeah i wanted mouse pad that was fast and also accurate so i bought that awesome Razer Exactmat which is like an aluminum double sided mouse pad.
was about 40 bucks but i really wanted it.
So Luke you should definitely buy that. The best part is if you got a tray or one of those nostrodomo things you got a lot of space to hurl your mouse. i hope its not wireless or you might bust a "wiimote into the tv".
Or you can just make your table a mousepad.. just get some of the notebook sticky rolls things with black tint and just stick it down on your table. worked wonders when I was back in campus :P
I absolutely love my steelpad, works awesome with my razer and is easy to clean
[www.steelseries.com]
My Everglide Titan would be a larger mouse pad, for the sole reason that it isn't supposed to be shared with a keyboard.
So how big a mouse pad is this really???
I use a similar thing at work and couldn't stand not having it.
Ha! My Xtrac Ripper XXL is 36" X 18", so it's.... about the same size.
But I needed a bigger mouse pad since the top of my desk is all glass. More for protecting the desk then having too long of a reach while gaming.
Bah! Screw paying for mousepads! I got mine from Digital Life, and it does its job.
Anyone know what that thing is to the left of the keyboard in the top picture? Looks like it'd be pretty sweet for audio/video editing...
I use to have something like this that sat under my keyboard and monitor back in the stone age when my PC screen took up half the friggin desk. It was a large royal-blue monster that I had picked up at some software convention years ago... I wonder what ever happened to it...
I've come to realize the new laser mice actually track better staight on the desk (assuming its not glass). The mouse pad makes it jitter.
I'm with Electroqueen - to hell with paying for anything you can get from free merch...
@sovietspartan: I just got my Razer Exactmat the other day, to go with my Razer Death Adder and Razer Tarantula purchases. I hadn't realized what a huge difference a purpose-built mouse and keyboard would make. And I like blue-glowy things. :)
SteelPad QcK heavy is also nice
What is that trackball looking thing to the left of the keyboard? I want one.
I'm using a desk pad bought from an office supply store cut to the size of my keyboard/mouse tray. Works good and wasn't $40.
I am using a free pad from the hospital.
Nothing like staring at "Zyrtec" taking over the right side of the pc.
I remember buying a 17x17" mousepad from CompUSA for $10 way back when. Everything to the right of my keyboard was ALL mousepad!
I have to admit I use a small mouse pad and a huge ammount of sense. But only because I don't have room for a large mouse mat.
I use a Corepad that I cut down to exactly fit my keyboard tray. I found that I tend to pick up my mouse and recenter it constantly on a small mouse pad for fear of moving off the edge at a crucial moment. Having a huge pad fixes that annoying habit, plus it just looks nice.
We use Trac Pads here at work. Love 'em, but they get kinda gross. In fact mine needs replacing. I should tell my boss...
I have a 4000dpi mouse, so I don't need much space at all. This does look stylish, though.
@TTFCL - That looks like a 3dconnexion spacexplorer to me. I've always wanted to check one out but never have...
Who else here touchpads their shooters?
For some odd reason I prefer it to a mouse when playing twitchy games.
Nothing says epeen compensation like this mouse pad.
Here is your large, cool looking, and economical mouse pad solution:
Get yourself to the local art/drafting supply shop, and ask for cutting mats- they are available in sizes anywhere from a standard sheet of paper, to a size that would cover your whole desk.
They are obviously extremely durable, perfect for optical mice, and look cool- they generally have a one inch grid printed on them to aid cutting and measuring, so you get kind of a bladerunner/technical look- and you can find them in white, black, green, whatever.
They are also nice and thin, and don't worry about spills or cleaning- they will last forever.
There you go!
Ah, Plunkett. You never fail to make me snort whatever I'm drinking at the time through my nose.
Does anybody outside of an office even use a mousepad anymore? I use my wireless laser mouse on whatever surface is more comfortable at that moment.
@Strangelove: Gamers ?
These aren't the same "best dad in the world" mouse pads that are used in offices. They're generally made of a slick plastic or other various smooth surface that's light on friction. Also, they usually include Teflon mouse feet, which are great.
I don't use a higher grade pad by any means, but its fairly decent.
While you can definitely be as good as the next person by using a $5 officemax pad, it's just a comfort thing for others.
I got something like this at an Office depot for about 24 bucks. It works as well as mouse pad and seems of good qaulity. The dimensions are a bit different. I think mine is larger at least taller in that my monitor and stand can go on it as well.
$40? For the price, I would rather just duct tape a bunch of mouse pads together.
My ancient RadioShack one with the gel wrist support is still all I need.
It supports my wrist with gel!
I game with a trackball. Makes my wrist feel soooo much better than a mouse.
I'm a big fan of the Thunder 8 mousepad from xraypad: [www.xraypad.com]
It's not the cheapest pad out there, but it's also half the cost of this monstrosity. It's big enough that my kitten can sleep on it and I can still game. Then again, it doesn't really matter, the kitten usually gets knocked off by my wild mousing within a few minutes. :P
It's nice to not have to worry about going off the edge with a trackball... ;)
Seriously, though, like others have suggested, get materials to make your own mousepad for a lot cheaper than this (admittedly cool) pre-made one. Save money for that next Big Game(tm). Y'know, like Duke Nukem Forever. *grin*
