Xbox Live Achievements Not Wiped?

Yesterday we reported on a rumor that concerned the recent issues with Xbox Live being responsible for wiping out some of the achievements 360 gamers played hard to collect. Despite several comments on that story indicating otherwise, word from Microsoft's Larry Hryb is that this is not the case. The following comment appeared in Larry's Twitter widget early this morning.

Regardless of what you have read, achievements are not disappearing for users
Just the tiniest of statements there, but coming from the guy who should be in the know on such things it speaks volumes. If you have experienced loss of achievements, you are probably just imagining things, because The Hryb would never mislead us. Have we heard the last of this issue? Somehow I doubt it. Thanks to Kotakuite Adam for keeping a vigilant eye on Larry's Twitter, his finger poised over the print screen button, just in case.

This afternoon Microsoft officially responded to our request for a comment, saying mostly the same thing Hryb said:

Xbox LIVE is not erasing Achievement's earned while playing on the service. If any member is having trouble with their Xbox LIVE service, we urge them to contact 1-800-4-my-xbox.

  • It would have been very hard for me to believe that people were losing achievements. Although they serve no real purpose, people still care about them and XB would have had major hell to pay if it were the case.

  • If it happened then I know 2 people who would break down. They're (idiots) achievement whores and have lost the ture meaning of gaming-FUN

  • lol at everyone complaining yesterday. glad to see it wasn't a problem though.

  • the xbox forums are ablaze with stories about this, it's insane. They are also a bunch of whiny little babies too. I love my xbox 360 and while the downtime is annoying, I wouldn't go trading mine in or suing Microsoft over this. I just can't believe people are so irrational.

  • @goldwings: I told my brother about this yesterday. I kid you not, he set down the bowl of cereal that he was eating and ran downstairs as fast as he could to make sure his achievements were still all accounted for. I haven't seen him that nervous in a long time.

  • I'm big into achievements and all, but the loss of them wouldn't be that big of a deal. I'm having more trouble with the fact that my 360 broke on Christmas and I'm for it to come back after the repairs. Next Week.

  • fortunately, i dont give crap about achievements
(dontbelieve me i was in the verge of tears yesterday)

  • Working in development as I do, I always laugh when a company says "No, everything's fine." when a bunch of users are complaining. How many times have we seen this turn into "turns out there was a minor problem that affected a small percentage of users"

  • Well it's funny, because you can't lose your achievements unless your hard drive AND Live went belly up and lost them. Your hard drive stores them, and sends them to Live - if you happen to use Live, that is. Too bad there isn't a safe way to back them up..maybe Microsoft should start working on that.

  • Eh, I beat Halo and didn't get the achievement for the last four missions for some reason. Not a big deal, and probably not related to whatever this story is referring to. I love street cred and all, but we must remember what we're talking about and consider its irrelevance.

  • The question to ask Larry is can my brother-in-law retrieve his account yet... the bastard won't play Rock Band World Tour if he doesn't get his precious achievements.

  • Achievements ruined my life.

@waterbottle: Ill see you that and raise you 5.

  • Regardless of what you have read, the Xbox Live team is NOT working on the problem and you can all go f*** yourselves

    There, fixed.

  • Ya i didnt think this was a problem. Sony fanboys will jump at any chance to put down xbox. I dont blame them though, saying that xbox live is going completely haywire is better than there previous xbox putdowns, like -"halo is the worst game ever"-

Oh well the fanboy wars will go on......

  • ya achievements are a mysterious addiction, like pokemon and the strange need to "collect em all". I had to force myself to not care too much. In my experience people bash it that don't have a 360 but those same people find themselves strangely consumed with getting all the "achievements" that are placed in Uncharted.

  • "Regardless of what you have read, achievements are not disappearing for users"

This sounds an awful lot like, "the xbox 360 failure rate is within industry norms of 3-5 percent"

How quickly people forget that most corporations aren't honest until they have to be, and even then, one should "trust but verify".

  • Achievements play to the OCD in all of us...

  • Let me make this perfectly clear. There is absolutely no way to pass basic training on Halo 3's online mode without unlocking the acheivement. I'm currently private rank and yet that acheivement has disappeared (with no apparnt way to reclaim it, I might add). My gamertag is DrLilo if want to see the evidence for yourself.

  • I was out of town for most of the holiday Live crashes but I haven't noticed any of my achievements missing. Not that I'd really "notice" it because I'm not going to go and verify that I have everything I think I should have.

I do admit that I'm an achievement whore and have rented easy-1000 games like TMNT and King Kong just to get their achievements.

  • @giovonti: I've had a similar experience with my brother on this one. He says the achievements are stupid, but then when he gets even slightly close to 1000/1000 he has to finish it. He's playing Tenchu Z even though he beat it on Medium and has now started Easy to get all the achievements.

  • "Thanks to Kotakuite Adam...."

That was me! I feel famous! :)

  • Thank God. So I haven't wasted my life.

  • Achievements obtained offline are always wiped out when people use the option 'recover gamertag' instead of 'connect to XBL' and half of the time people don't even realise they didn't choose the correct option.

  • @DrLilo: Looks like you have the achievement to me. I checked your profile on Bungie.net and then went to Xbox.com and they show you having it.

  • @DrLilo: It shows you have it now. Says 01/01/08. I took a screenshot and you can look at it here. click

    Strange stuff though.

If those got wiped, I think every 360 fan would abondon the 360.

  • all my points are still there - if you had stolen points Smaug would've noticed and Lake Town would suffer

  • I didn't lose any achievement points, but I did lose a whole night of COD4 Stats.

Monday night I hit 40 and had a bunch of wins and kills.

Last night I logged on and it said I was a 39. When I started playing, it said I had 2000+ points until I hit 40 and I didn't have any of my wins, kills, new weapons, etc. I had also completed a couple of challenges that I had to repeat.

Not the end of the world but a frustrating glitch to say the least.

  • At least Microsoft didn´t called you a retard freak with hallucinations since they told people to call them ASAP if something went wrong with their service...

But calling yourself flawless isn´t convincing me eidher.

  • Yeah, people really need to calm down when rumors pop up and maybe, i dunno, like think things through. Rational thought paired with some simple logic actually will get you through life without being overly stressed or causing reactionary panics in the other lemmings.

  • Cant you just right down ur achievements on a little bit fo paper?

    Its basically the same....

  • @Adam In Texas: Aren't achievements displayed from newest to oldest? So shouldn't that be below the one for finishing the game?

  • I had this problem over the weekend - any achievements that I had received on Saturday & Sunday were gone from Live. Though on the machine it still showed them all. My first/only concern when this happened was that I'd lost a bunch of save data from my system - which meant I'd have to replay some levels. But by Monday night all was right again.

  • "There is not a higher than normal failure rate on the Xbox 360."
Why believe people who we know have lied.

  • Ugh.

And I was just about to buy a 360. This is insane.

    ~

  • @murdermonkey:

Considering it has an almost 100% failure rate with certain models if you just use them too much.. Yeah.. Not higher then normal at all.

  • Since the official Xbox Live status is "Everything is great thanks!" and I know for a fact it's still falling down like crazy, I think I'm currently more likely to believe the raving masses on the tubes for now.

    "Disconnected from Xbox live"
    *reconnect*
    "Xbox live error: hexnumber"
    *watch spinning logo of lag*
    "Xbox live error: hexnumber"
    "Disconnected from Xbox live"

    *sigh*

  • i'm pretty sure there is a 100% failure rate on everything as long as you use it long enough for it to break.

  • @ThePeel

That happened to my son also. He lost quite a bit of work he'd put in on COD4.

I wonder if people confused Achievements with Challenges and that's where things got tangled up in the news.

I also read that for some people who lost Challenges and Points in COD4 a simple restart of the console rectified the problem.

  • I must be born under some really lucky star.....
no XBL problems whatsoever.....and all my Launch 360s are still fully functional....

I did notice one night that one of my friend's achievement had dropped to 7000......but the next day was back up to 16000....

  • "Regardless of what you have read, achievements are not disappearing for users"

Let me translate that for ease of use:

"Nothing to see here! PAY NO ATTENTION TO THE MAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN!!"

  • haha

    ...that dummy is moving...

    THIS EXHIBIT IS CLOSED!

  • Xbox 360? Oh yeah I forgot I had one of those...I should finally go beat Assassins Creed now.

  • Hmmmm. I was having trouble DLing Shoot um up last night so I called 1-800-4MYXBOX. One could say I was having trouble with live.

The lady on the other end promptly told me they were having severe issues and to call back later and proceeded to hang up on me.

Odd they should tell me to take that action when doing so results in wasted time, no fix and being shit on.

MS is on my shit list.

  • @D_DubDSU: Yeah, honestly the downtime hasn't bothered me at all; I also can't threaten to sell my Xbox360 for a PS3 as I already own both so I suppose Microsoft has me trapped.

  • @tsukihimeblood:

Amen.. No one heard or reported one thing about it until the rumor actually got posted, then everyone and their brother was like "oh yea um... I was missing 200pts somehow and my friend lost 3 of his achievements I think we should sue" my assssssss

/Xbox live still working fine for me

  • So all those people who posted on the other thread [kotaku.com] bitching about losing achievements are liars?

Yeah, I'm looking at you: WRECKTHELAW, NAUSER and DEEJAYBD. You have some esplainin' to do.

  • I believe there's truth to this. Perhaps achievements were eraased temporarily for some but have since been restored.

  • So are you saying that everyone who said they lost some achievements in the last post were wrong? If that's not the biggest load of BS I've heard today....

  • Side note: Are achievements stored client side or server side? If it's server side, perhaps just some of them aren't getting sent over to the client with all the communication issues as of late, which would make them "disappear" until they managed to resync. That would explain why achivements aren't showing up on DrLilo's 360 but DO show up on his achievements page on the web?

GRAIN OF SALT: I know jack-diddly-squat about how Live works.

  • Good to hear

  • I was told by my friend that I'm not a real man unless my gamerscore exceeds 1,000. I don't know what kind of ramifications this has for female gamers, and it's interesting to note that my friend has over 30,000 points. But I rely on these points so I don't shrivel up and die.
