This is 4Gamers' 2.1 speaker setup for the Nintendo Wii. As you can see, the product carries the Official Nintendo Seal. It's also crafted to look like a Wii, with two Nunchuk speakers and a subwoofer that...somewhat resembles the console itself. In much the same way Britney circa 2007 somewhat resembles Britney circa 1999. Strangely there's no mention of it on 4Gamer's own neglected, outdated site, but advertisements for the set are starting to pop up here and there, so we'll go ahead and presume they're real and that 4Gamers really do intend to sell them to you. Sometime. Somewhere.

I wouldn't want the woofer right next to any system/dvd-player/etc. Honestly, if I was just looking at the pic, I would almost think that's a wii-computer.
Wow it is a super Wii! Wait only 2.1? I'll pass.
The britney joke is just too easy to pass up these days isn't it?
It looks fine if all you do is Wii but does it work for everything else too? Seems to me I'd rather buy a surround system that works with every device in the living room rather than just themed for the Wii. Otherwise it looks cool.
What the hell. Why would you buy that?
Big magnet next to data... clever ¬_¬
WOO-HOO!!!! Turn your Wii into a noisy Gamecube!!!!
Intresting design. But if Nintendo doesn't care for high end grahics, or even story to a game.
Why woud they care about sound?
@NotAZombie:
because the Wii is known for its suberb sound output of course.
Bah! even the PS2 had 5.1 support!!!
WOW, thats a big Wii...get it? "Big Wii"
Yeah, I'm gonna keep the day job thnx.
@poke50uk:
I would be more concerned about bass next to optical media.
magnets next to data? some smart posters here. and the bass vibration is nothing. and graphics and story are nothing if the game is not fun.
@Accordion: The Wii supports Pro-Logic II, it's got 5.1 just like everyone else.
@poke50uk: There's no magnetic media. That magnets gonna do jack. I would, as others have stated, be slightly concerned about placing an optical media player so close to a sub though.
First thing I thought looking at the picture is "Won't that break it?"
From my experience putting electronics next to a bass speaker means "bad times"
For a second I thought that picture was the Wii with a HDD and some sort of graphic enhancer (I've always expected those to be the reason for the USB drives on the back). For a second, I was pretty excited (I'm already running out of space on the console). Then I find out it's a 2.1 speaker setup. Is the Wii going portable? Is it manufactured for those 22 people whose TVs don't come equipped with speakers? I don't understand the appeal. Then again, I didn't get the whole "gamer chair" thing either, and plenty of people seem to enjoy them.
@ryanrule:
Let me guess. Affordable = Fun
Last I checked, bowling is more fun at a bowling alley. Baseball is more fun on a diamond and cooking is more fun when you can impress a chick and get laid.
Obviously story and fun factor is important, but that comes from the mind of the developer, not the hardware. Being able to toss in some shweet graphics and kick ass sound is the very least the manufacturer can do.
And about the Sub-Wiifer.. its supposed to be on the floor idiots.. are you going to put your friggin' Wii on the floor?!
Thats rather odd looking
Technically they could have magnetically shielded the sub, in which case it would be safe to have them that close. Even if they didn't it looks like there is about an inch or two gap between the system and sub, which should be enough.
@Sloopydrew: Most speakers built into TVs these days are crap. This is especially true if you get a lower end (price wise) HDTV.
COOL!
@Witzbold: Never seen a Wii with that kind of gerth??
@AGiES:
Pro logic II is stereo sound trough five.
@ryanrule:
If the bass is nothing it isn't very good bass.
I really don't see how it's any different from those gaming speakers sets that they sell for like $80, but don't last long at all.
I'd just save up the money and get a 5.1 surround system. I have that with the Wii, and it sounds fantastic.
Fugliest thing I´ve ever saw.
@Accordion: No, it's 5.1. The .1 is a subwoofer which doesn't require any fancy processing.
Just another one of those lame Wii gimmicks.
Mrs Wii has let herself go...I guess those strapping young speakers must have taken their toll...
@poke50uk:
Flash memory is unaffected by magnetism.
That's one "phat" Wii!!!
Yeah, I can't see putting that sub right next to the Wii, even if I did want it for some reason. I will say, my GF got a little BOSE radio-CD thing last X-mas and it sounds great with both the Wii and 360. Not as good as on the full 5.1 with powered subwoofer setup I have in the other room, but pretty good for its tiny size.
Ummm, how the hell did this get the seal of approval?
I think I might need to jump on this bandwagon and start making my own accessories. If this kind of rebadged crap with a fancy (in someone's eyes) subwoofer makes it through, Im sure I can get away with something...
Maybe the wiiwii, a strap on wiimote you can play completely handless. Amazing!
Like many posters here, my first response was: "Big loud vibrations right next to the Wii unit / optical drive?" I liked the magnetism posts, too.
But the bottom line is, I play the occaisional gamecube game, and I'm too lazy to shuffle my rechargable batteries from the Wii Remote to my one Wavebird controller, so that means, if I want to play Sin & Punishment, for example, I'm playing with a 3 foot gamecube controller leash.
I need to be able to move my Wii to a more accessible spot if I want to play with the Cube controller (or DK Bongo drums), and then move it back to its normal position when I'm playing regular Wii games.
Which is more Nitendo's fault than these guys, but it's still reason enough not to buy this speaker system.
Of course, the real irony here, now that I think about it, is they originally wanted the Wii to look like a component in your home stereo setup... Now, all of a sudden, they want our home stereo setup to look like a Wii.
@ ACCORDION:
PL II is 5.1 over stereo cables, I think thats what you meant.
I remember the sound test in Soul Calibur II distinctly.
There was Left:1, Center:2, Right:3, Back:4/5(seemed to be mono in that game), and then Sub:+.1
Remember when the official Nintendo Seal had the word quality in it? Yeah....
So the fat one is the wife ???
@ptolemy: Gotta bring out my nerd here:
5.1 generally refers to discrete channels. PLII is decoded from specially mixed stereo programs using level and phase information to generate a center and rear channel, as well as a low frequency channel using a crossover.
As far as the sub, I wouldn't be too worried about the magnetic interference, and for the vibration, theoretically the lens and disc should both be disturbed the same way and won't cause the lens correction to work that much harder. But overall a silly product.
At first glance I thought it was like an external RAID setup for the Wii, which would have been hilarious. Still pretty funny, though.
Reliability issues aside, who puts their Wii on the floor? Or conversely, puts their sub on a shelf?
@Toasticus: External RAID for Wii would be awesome, if entirely useless and funny.
I put mine on the floor, in the little stand with controller slots that came with the Wii Bonus Pack I got last X-mas.
@Accordion: No, Pro Logic 2 is indeed a form of 5.1 sound. Do research.
@dowingba:
Correct.
[en.wikipedia.org]
I guess this would be neat for someone who only has a Wii and a tv. The stand makes it more feasable to put the Wii on the floor and the sub probably isn't that powerful anyway. I would think that many people already have a sound system hooked up to everything, including their Wii.
I put my Wii on the floor, too. Since I don't have shelf space for it. :/
Way to assume everyone does the same thing as you, guys.
(But no way I'd buy these ugly speakers)
@TDub301: So am I one of the minority? I only have a TV and a Wii...and it's a little iddy bitty Wii... :(
@DaiMacculate, BPMΩ: Ah! Question answered, I guess!
why would the official Wii speakers not work in the PL II that most top end wii games use? makes no sense.
well damn, Id buy that. But it has to be more then just Speakers and a stereo. It HAS to be. Its far too big really.... Maybe its a stereo/DVD player... If it was just the stereo/sub woofer + speakers they could just make it look like the actual Wii
Wow.....another gimmicky product by Nintendo. And the sad thing is; the stupid Wii fanboys would probably end up buying this piece of crap.
@asianmacker: You obviously missed reading any part of the article, in which it's said 3 separate times that 4Gamers are making this, not Nintendo.
Ugh.. I hate speakers like these. Any speaker with those little circular stands will tip over very, very easily. I'm starting to notice permanent damage in my PC speakers and I suspect years of accidental tipping is the problem.
@Plunkett: Maybe he was too busy macking asians?
